Early childhood exposure to non-violent discipline and physical and psychological aggression in low- and middle-income countries: National, regional, and global prevalence estimates.

BACKGROUND: Advocates for children's rights have recommended the elimination of all forms of violent discipline given its detrimental effects on children's development. Yet, little is known about the global prevalence of various forms of discipline, including physical and psychological aggression, as well as alternative forms of non-violent discipline, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). OBJECTIVE: This study aims to obtain national, regional, and global prevalence estimates of the percentage and number of 2- to- 4-y-olds in LMICs exposed to these disciplinary practices by

Anxiety symptoms mediate the relationship between exposure to stressful negative life events and depressive symptoms: A conditional process modelling of the protective effects of resilience.

BACKGROUND: Resilience has provided a useful framework that elucidates the effects of protective factors to overcome psychological adversities but studies that address the potential contingencies of resilience to protect against direct and indirect negative effects are lacking. These obvious gaps have also resulted in oversimplification of complex processes that can be clarified by moderated mediation associations. This study examines a conditional process modelling of the protective effects of resilience against indirect effects. METHOD: Two separate samples were recruited in a cross-section

A community study of the psychological effects of the Omagh car bomb on adults.

BACKGROUND: The main aims of the study were to assess psychological morbidity among adults nine months after a car bomb explosion in the town of Omagh, Northern Ireland and to identify predictors of chronic posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. METHOD: A questionnaire was sent to all adults in households in The Omagh District Council area. The questionnaire comprised established predictors of PTSD (such as pre-trauma personal characteristics, type of exposure, initial emotional response and long-term adverse physical or financial problems), predictors derived from the Ehlers and Clark (2000

Importance of Zebrafish as an Efficient Research Model for the Screening of Novel Therapeutics in Neurological Disorders.

Over the previous years, the use of an animal model has become very common for the screening of novel drugs. Animal model represents the complex problems of humans into the simplest forms, so these can be extended further to be included in the experimental procedure. The most successful models in neuroscience, rats and mice, are undoubtedly considered as one of the best models to understand the psychology of the mammalian brain and its associated functions involved in behavioral repertoire. Moreover, recently researchers in behavioral neuroscience are focusing more on the use of aquatic animal

Experiences of Older Adults Living With HIV.

Background and Purpose: Older people living with HIV (OPLWH) face complex challenges as they age. Although advances in antiretroviral therapy have transformed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection into a chronic condition and increased longevity, aging with HIV is often accompanied by multimorbidity, polypharmacy, stigma, social isolation, and mental health concerns. These intersecting factors complicate clinical management and are not always fully addressed in traditional HIV care models. Methods: This study aimed to explore the clinical care experiences of OPLWH over age 50. A qualita

Integrated psychological resilience and nutritional support improves sleep, emotional wellbeing, inflammation, and clinical recovery in colon cancer: a randomized controlled trial.

Psychological vulnerability, sleep disturbance, emotional distress, and malnutrition are common in colon cancer and impair recovery and survival. Integrated perioperative strategies remain underexplored. To evaluate whether combining psychological resilience training with individualized nutritional support improves co-primary outcomes and to explore effects on recovery, inflammation, and survival after colon cancer surgery. In this randomized trial, 310 patients with stage I - III colon cancer were assigned to standard care or a 12-week integrated program. Co-primary outcomes were resilience (

Social determinants of mid-life mental health decline: a life-course analysis from the 1970 British Cohort Study.

Mental well-being has been shown to follow a U-shaped pattern across the life course in cohorts studied to date, with psychological distress worsening as people enter their forties. The reasons for this decline remain a puzzle. This study examined the social determinants associated with this phenomenon and their relative importance as predictors of mid-life mental health. We used data from the 1970 British Cohort Study, aged 26, 34, and 42 (N = 6992, 51.5% female). Mental distress was measured with the nine-item Malaise Inventory. We contrasted a group of those whose mental health declined wit

Maternal mind-mindedness: A latent profile analysis approach.

Mind-mindedness refers to parents' or caregivers' ability to view their child as an independent person with individual thoughts and intentional behaviors. Representational mind-mindedness assessment focuses on the caregiver representations of their child's mental states, (e.g., emotions, preferences, and goals). Individual differences in mind-mindedness have been associated with parental caregiving and child outcomes. However, there is a lack of research examining dynamic clusters of mind-related parental representations and their associations with demographic and psychological risk factors. H

Hair cortisol concentration and adolescent mental health: Insight from the Queensland Twin Adolescent Brain Project.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a stress-sensitive period for neurodevelopment and mental health, with chronic stress implicated in the onset of psychological disorders. Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) serves as a non-invasive biomarker of long-term hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, yet its relevance to adolescent mental health remains inconsistently characterised. METHODS: This longitudinal study examined HCC in 302 community-dwelling adolescent twins from Brisbane, Australia, with data collected at two sessions approximately two years apart, following a standardised assessm

Game on but pay the price: Hyperfocus, flow, escapism, self-efficacy, and burnout among video gamers with ADHD traits.

Hyperfocus-an intense, uncontrollable state of attention-has gained attention for its dual adaptive and maladaptive outcomes and its potential role in gaming experience. Although distinguishing hyperfocus from flow during gameplay may be challenging, their predictive factors (e.g., escapism motivation) and consequences (e.g., burnout, self-efficacy) may differentiate the two constructs. However, the distinction between hyperfocus and flow in gaming contexts - particularly regarding their psychological outcomes and statistical predictors - remains insufficiently understood. The aims of this stu

Short and medium term efficacy of an online behaviour change intervention on physical activity in adults with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Online behaviour change interventions (OBCI) have been poorly explored in adults with asthma. This study aimed to investigate the short- and medium-term efficacy of an OBCI in improving primarily physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB), and secondarily in asthma control, quality of life (QoL), motivation, and basic psychological needs for exercise in adults with asthma. METHODS: Adults with stable asthma were assessed at baseline, post-intervention, and 6-month follow-up. PA and SB were evaluated by accelerometry. Asthma control, QoL, exercise motivation, and basic psy

Effects of a mindfulness-based intervention versus a social contact control in alleviating loneliness among older adults: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is highly prevalent among Chinese older adults. Mindfulness-based interventions for older adults (MBOA) have demonstrated potential in alleviating loneliness. However, few studies have employed active controls with long-term follow-up. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of MBOA in reducing loneliness compared with social contact control (SCC). METHODS: This parallel, randomised controlled trial (RCT) assigned community-dwelling lonely Chinese older adults (≥60 years) in Hong Kong to MBOA or SCC. Both interventions comprised 8 weekly 1.5-hour group-based

Impact of a brief HRV-biofeedback intervention on emotion regulation following a real-life stressful event: A randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Although studies indicate that Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRV-BFB) interventions seem to increase physiological regulation, their effects on broader aspects of emotion regulation during stress recovery remain inconsistent. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of a brief 6-min HRV-BFB intervention on different aspects of emotion regulation and well-being after exposure to a real-life stressor. METHOD: For this purpose, a randomized, parallel-group (1:1), controlled and monocentric trial was conducted following exposure to a naturalistic stressor in me

Can cognitive behavioral additions improve the efficacy of self-help mindfulness intervention for depression and anxiety ?: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the comparative efficacy of a self-help mindfulness intervention (sMBI) and a combined mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy intervention (sMBI + CBT) in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Additionally, it explored the mechanisms underlying these interventions. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial (RCT), 335 university students from various institutions across China, all experiencing moderate to severe emotional distress, were randomly assigned to one of three groups: sMBI, sMBI + CBT, or a waitlist control group (WL). Interventions we

Effectiveness and mechanisms of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy for treatment-resistant depression: a reanalysis of a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy has shown promising effects for treatment-resistant depression, but it remains unclear whether its hypothesized mechanisms - reducing emotional repression, negative affect, and psychological distress - actually mediate treatment outcomes. METHODS: We reanalyzed publicly available data from a randomized controlled trial (N = 86) comparing 20 sessions of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy to waitlist control for treatment-resistant depression. Depression and process measures were assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and 3-month f

Contemplative practices serve as complementary mental health strategies in nationally representative samples from Australia and New Zealand.

Contemplative practices (including meditation and yoga) are increasingly popular worldwide, especially as alternatives and/or complements to mental health treatment. However, nationally representative samples that allow for accurate estimates of prevalence and relation to mental health are scarce. We conducted a nationally representative, cross-sectional survey in Australia and New Zealand (N = 2640). Sampling was stratified by age, gender, ancestry/ethnicity, region and income. Two pre-registered questions were analysed to explore participants' engagement in contemplative practices and associ

Associations between intuitive eating and health behaviors and physical health in U.S. adults.

Intuitive eating is a non-diet approach that emphasizes eating in response to hunger and fullness cues that has potential as a sustainable health promotion framework. Although research demonstrates that intuitive eating is strongly associated with psychological health, less is known about its associations with health behaviors and physical health. We examined how intuitive eating related to lifestyle behaviors and chronic disease diagnosis in a large, diverse U.S. adult sample. Adults aged ≥ 18 years residing in the U.S. were recruited from CloudResearch's Connect platform to complete a cross-
