Effect of alpha-methyldopa administration during pregnancy on the development of a child's sleep.

A male infant was born to a mother who had been suffering from primary hyperaldosteronism with the administration of alpha-methyldopa (MD) during pregnancy. His behavioral development, especially that of sleep, was studied by means of sleep-awake rhythm and polysomnography recordings (PSG) from 2 months to 2 years and 5 months of age. His daily sleep-awake rhythm showed some abnormal pattern. As to the PSG, the proportion of each sleep stage was normal and the two types of body movements (BM) showed various patterns. A paradoxical increase was seen in the twitch movement of some muscles. MD af

Rett's syndrome in the west of Scotland.

Nineteen girls with characteristic features of Rett's syndrome, including normal initial development, regression at about 12 months of age, repetitive hand movements, and severe mental handicap were studied. This represents an estimated incidence of one in 30 000 live births (one in 15 000 girls) in the west of Scotland. Although the children were often initially considered to be autistic, they did not conform to this diagnosis as they made good personal contact within the limits of their mental development. The developmental regression was sometimes falsely attributed to vaccination. Each chi

Sleep apnea and nocturnal myoclonus in the elderly.

Insomnia, daytime sleepiness, and nocturnal wandering, so common in the elderly, are caused largely by two specific pathophysiologic processes. Sleep apnea is a condition where respiration pauses during sleep, leading to arousal. Sleep apnea is due either to obstruction in the throat or failure of the central respiratory center. Periodic movements in sleep are characterized by frequent ankle and leg flexions, leading to arousal. Sleep apnea and periodic movements in sleep require specific diagnoses and treatments. Each process occurs in 20%-30% of people over 65, and perhaps the majority of ol

Preserved contextual modulation of eye movements in psychosis prone individuals.

The framework of predictive processing conceives perception as the integration of prior predictions and sensory data. An important source of priors is contextual information, including semantic context (i.e., the meaningful relationships between objects) and temporal context (i.e., the information provided by recent perceptual experiences). Alterations in the integration of priors and sensory data have been proposed to underlie psychotic experiences. Here, we examined the effects of semantic and temporal contextual information on eye movements in healthy individuals with low and high psychosis

Mental imagery and its role in the psychopathology and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder: A systematic review and narrative synthesis.

Whilst intrusive mental images are recognised within diagnostic descriptions of obsessions in OCD, research remains limited, with most work focusing on intrusive thoughts. Moreover, it has been suggested that mental imagery might represent a distinct form of OCD symptomatology and could potentially be harnessed to treat symptoms. We performed a systematic review, adopting a two-phased approach, to examine the role of mental imagery in both the psychopathology and treatment of OCD. First, we explored the characteristics and pathological features of intrusive imagery in OCD. Second, we evaluated

Validation of the RBD Symptom Severity Scale in the North American Prodromal Synucleinopathy Consortium.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by dream enactment. The International RBD Study Group developed the RBD Symptom Severity Scale (RBDSSS) to assess symptom severity for clinical or research use. We assessed the psychometric and clinimetric properties of the RBDSSS in participants enrolled in the North American Prodromal Synucleinopathy (NAPS) Consortium for RBD. METHODS: NAPS participants, who have polysomnogram-confirmed RBD, and their bedpartners completed the RBDSSS (participant and bedpartner versions). The RBDSSS contains 8 questio

The human somatosensory cortex contributes to the encoding of newly learned movements.

Recent studies have indicated somatosensory cortex involvement in motor learning and retention. However, the nature of its contribution is unknown. One possibility is that the somatosensory cortex is transiently engaged during movement. Alternatively, there may be durable learning-related changes which would indicate sensory participation in the encoding of learned movements. These possibilities are dissociated by disrupting the somatosensory cortex following learning, thus targeting learning-related changes which may have occurred. If changes to the somatosensory cortex contribute to retentio

Dealing with the heterogeneous presentations of freezing of gait: how reliable are the freezing index and heart rate for freezing detection?

BACKGROUND: Freezing of gait (FOG) is an unpredictable gait arrest that hampers the lives of 40% of people with Parkinson's disease. Because the symptom is heterogeneous in phenotypical presentation (it can present as trembling/shuffling, or akinesia) and manifests during various circumstances (it can be triggered by e.g. turning, passing doors, and dual-tasking), it is particularly difficult to detect with motion sensors. The freezing index (FI) is one of the most frequently used accelerometer-based methods for FOG detection. However, it might not adequately distinguish FOG from voluntary sto

Contrast sensitivity, optotype acuity and fixation eye movement abnormalities in amblyopia under binocular viewing.

INTRODUCTION: Visual function deficits are seen in amblyopic subjects during fellow and binocular viewing. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between Fixation Eye Movement (FEM) abnormalities and binocular contrast sensitivity and optotype acuity deficits in amblyopia. METHODS: We recruited 10 controls and 25 amblyopic subjects [Anisometropic = 6, Strabismic = 10, Mixed = 9]. We measured binocular contrast sensitivity at spatial frequencies 1,2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 and binocular and monocular optotype acuity using a staircase procedure. We recorded FEMs using high-resolution

Does the sampling frequency of an eye tracker affect the detection of glaucomatous visual field loss?

PURPOSE: Evidence suggests that eye movements have potential as a tool for detecting glaucomatous visual field defects. This study evaluated the influence of sampling frequency on eye movement parameters in detecting glaucomatous visual field defects during a free-viewing task. METHODS: We investigated eye movements in two sets of experiments: (a) young adults with and without simulated visual field defects and (b) glaucoma patients and age-matched controls. In Experiment 1, we recruited 30 healthy volunteers. Among these, 10 performed the task with a gaze-contingent superior arcuate (SARC) s

A novel probe of attentional bias for threat in specific phobia: Application of the "MouseView.js" approach.

Although attentional bias for threat has been implicated in anxiety disorders, traditional attentional bias measures have been criticized for lack of reliability and validity, and eye tracking technologies can be cost-prohibitive. MouseView.js was recently developed to mimic eye tracking online by using the computer cursor as a proxy for gaze, and although it is equally reliable, MouseView.js' utility for capturing attentional bias for threat in anxiety-related disorders remains unclear. To fill this knowledge gap, snake phobic and non-phobic participants (N = 62) completed a behavioral avoida

Response Time Modulates the Relationship Between Implicit Learning and Motor Ability in Children With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Preliminary Study.

Difficulty with implicit learning plays an important role in the symptomology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, findings in motor learning are inconsistent. This study evaluated implicit sequence learning and its relationship with motor ability in children with and without ASD. We adopted a classic serial reaction time task with a retention task and three awareness tests. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children was administered to assess children's motor ability. Significant learning differences between children with and without ASD were only found in retention but not immediate

Loss of autism-candidate CHD8 perturbs neural crest development and intestinal homeostatic balance.

Individuals with mutations in CHD8 present with gastrointestinal complaints, yet the underlying mechanisms are understudied. Here, using a stable constitutive chd8 mutant zebrafish model, we found that the loss of chd8 leads to a reduced number of vagal neural crest cells (NCCs), enteric neural and glial progenitors, emigrating from the neural tube, and that their early migration capability was altered. At later stages, although the intestinal colonization by NCCs was complete, we found the decreased numbers of both serotonin-producing enterochromaffin cells and NCC-derived serotonergic neuron

A comparison of RIRD within chained and multiple schedules in the treatment of vocal stereotypy.

Slaton and Hanley (2016) compared the effects of multiple and chained schedules on stereotypy and item engagement for 2 individuals who exhibited automatically maintained motor stereotypy. Contingent access to motor stereotypy (i.e., chained schedules) was more effective than time-based access (i.e., multiple schedules) at reducing motor stereotypy, increasing item engagement, and establishing stimulus control for both participants. We systematically replicated Slaton and Hanley with 2 participants by a) targeting vocal stereotypy, b) including response interruption and redirection as a treatm

Effect of vibrostimulatory wearable technology on stereotyped behaviour in a child with autism and intellectual disability.

The aim of the work has been to report on the effects of vibrostimulation, administered through wearable technology, on stereotyped behaviour of a child in middle childhood, with autism, intellectual disability and severe behaviour in the 'stereotypic behaviour' subscale of the Restricted and Repetitive Behaviour Revised Scale. He received vibrostimulation (210 Hz, 2.8 µm), with a continuous pattern of vibration: three vibrations of 700 ms, each separated by a rest period of 500 ms and a pause of 8000 ms. Vibration was delivered bilaterally by two devices, repeating the vibration pattern for 3

Reading Difficulty Due to Oculomotor Dysfunction following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Case Report.

Reading involves adequate coordination of the oculomotor system. As interlink consists of neuronal control, an insult to the brain might affect the signal processing and lead to oculomotor dysfunction that can affect reading performance. Appropriate training to enhance the oculomotor coordination is effective in such scenarios. The purpose of this case report is to highlight the role of neuro-optometric vision therapy as a management option in oculomotor-based reading difficulty.

Increased trunk movements in people with hereditary spastic paraplegia: do these involve balance correcting strategies?

OBJECTIVE: Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is characterized by a bilaterally spastic gait pattern. During gait, increased trunk movements are often observed. People with HSP likely generate trunk movements to improve foot clearance and step length, but there may be additional explanations. Here, we investigate whether there is an association between reduced balance performance and increased trunk movements, as an increase in trunk movements may partly reflect balance correcting strategies. METHODS: We analyzed an historic cohort of 86 people with HSP who underwent gait analysis and balanc

Eye movement indices as predictors of conversion to psychosis in individuals at clinical high risk.

Eye movement abnormalities have been established as an "endophenotype" of schizophrenia. However, less is known about the possibility of these abnormalities as biomarkers for psychosis conversion among clinical high risk (CHR) populations. In the present study, 108 CHR individuals and 70 healthy controls (HC) underwent clinical assessments and eye-tracking tests, comprising fixation stability and free-viewing tasks. According to three-year follow-up outcomes, CHR participants were further stratified into CHR-converter (CHR-C; n = 21) and CHR-nonconverter (CHR-NC; n = 87) subgroups. Prediction
