The fact that only some individuals exposed to environmental chemicals develop chemical intolerance raises the possibility that genetic factors could be contributing factors. The present communication summarizes evidence from a genetic animal model of cholinergic supersensitivity that suggests that an abnormal cholinergic system could be one predisposing genetic factor. The Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) rats were established by selective breeding for increased responses to an organophosphate. It was subsequently found that these FSL rats were also more sensitive to direct-acting muscarinic ago

BACKGROUND: Abnormal delayed relaxation of skeletal muscles, known as myotonia, can cause disability in myotonic disorders. The main myotonic disorders are non-dystrophic myotonia and myotonic dystrophy. Non-dystrophic myotonia is a genetic muscle channelopathy predominantly causing myotonia. Myotonic dystrophic is a more systemic neuromuscular disorder causing myotonia as well as progressive myopathy and systemic manifestations, such as arrhythmias and cataracts. Myotonia manifests as stiffness, cramps, locking, pain, and fatigue, and can cause marked morbidity and disability. Sodium channel

Background Breast augmentation surgery (BAS) is one of the top cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the United States every year. There are various breast implant options, such as saline, silicone, smooth, and textured implants. Breast implant illness (BII) is a disorder associated with a wide array of symptoms presenting post breast implant surgery and is often associated with autoimmune disorders. Despite its prevalence, no comprehensive studies have investigated the occurrence of concerning symptoms after breast implant surgery in Puerto Rico (PR), and specific risk factors remain unid

BACKGROUND: Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is the major cause of short- and long-term morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Treatment options beyond corticosteroid therapy remain limited, and prolonged treatment often leads to impaired quality of life (QoL). A better understanding of the needs and experiences of patients with GVHD is required to improve patient care.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to explore different social media (SM) channels for gathering and analyzing the needs and experiences of patients and other stakeholders across 14

BackgroundHashimoto's thyroiditis is a common auto-immune disorder. The most common presenting symptoms may include anxiety, negative mood, depression, dry skin, cold intolerance, puffy eyes, muscle cramps and fatigue, deep voice, constipation, slow thinking and poor memory. Clinical manifestations of the disease are defined primarily by low levels of thyroid hormones; therefore it is treated by hormone replacement therapy, which usually consists of levothyroxine (LT4). Selenium might reduce antibody levels and result in a decreased dosage of LT4 and may provide other beneficial effects (e.g.

UNLABELLED: Objective. The patient's perspective in shared decision making has expanded to regulatory decision making for medical devices under the Food and Drug Administration's Patient Preference Initiative. Methods. Using choice-based conjoint (CBC) procedures, a discrete-choice experiment measure describing the risks and benefits of osseointegration was designed and used in a preference study among 188 adults with lower-limb loss. Our measure included 8 attributes of 1) risks: chance of infection, complete device failure rate, time without prosthesis, activity limitations, and 2) benefits:

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of vaccines against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has become one of the most effective means to establish a population immune barrier. Patients with cancer are vulnerable to COVID-19 infection, adverse events, and high mortality, and should be the focus of epidemic prevention and treatment. However, real-world data on the safety of vaccines for patients with breast cancer are still scarce.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the safety of COVID-19 vaccines between patients vaccinated before or after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
METHODS: Pati

BACKGROUND: Clinical practice guidelines recommend that exercise is essential in the self-management of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Attending supervised interventions requiring periodic medical center visits can be difficult and patients may decline participation, whereas effective home-based exercise interventions that do not require regular medical center visits are likely to be more accessible for AS patients.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of the research was to investigate the adherence, efficacy, and safety of a wearable technology-assisted combined home-based exercise program in AS.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of controlling quality of reconstructed sagittal balance for sagittal imbalance.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Patients with sagittal imbalance cannot walk or stand erect without overwork of musculature because of compromised biomechanical advantage. The result is muscle fatigue and activity-related pain. During reconstructive surgery, restoration of optimal sagittal balance is crucial for obtaining satisfactory clinical results. However, there is no way to control quality of reconstructed sagittal balance …

OBJECTIVES: Acute experimental pancreatitis (induced by cerulein) recently has been reported to cause marked diaphragmatic dysfunction, which may contribute to respiratory distress in this setting. In cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis, expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase is induced to produce a large amount of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide excessively produced has been implicated in diaphragmatic dysfunction induced by a variety of etiologies. The aims of the current study were, first, to examine whether nitric oxide overproduced through inducible nitric oxide synthase is involved in

From 1960 through 1972, 236 cases of amyloidosis with histologic proof were found. The amyloidosis was primary (without evidence of preceding or coexisting disease) in 132 cases (group 1) and associated with multiple myeloma in 61 (group 2). Secondary amyloidosis appeared in 19 cases (associated with rheumatoid arthritis or osteomyelitis in two-thirds of them). There were 22 patients with amyloid localized to a single organ (bladder, lung, skin, or larynx in more than half of them). Two patients had familial amyloidosis. In group 1 and group 2, the most common presenting symptoms were fatigue,

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Iliopsoas abscess (IPA) is a rare condition with varied symptomology and etiology. Less than one-third of patients with IPA present in the emergency department (ED) with the traditional triad of fever, back pain, and restricted hip motion (or limp), leading to delays in diagnosis and management. Acute liver failure is also a rare clinical presentation in the ED, being associated with high morbidity and mortality. It occurs most often in young patients without pre-existing liver disease, presenting unique challenges in clinical management. Most cases currently happen b

BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonate drugs can be used to improve the outcomes of women with breast cancer. Whilst many meta-analyses have quantified their potential benefits for patients, attempts at comprehensive quantification of potential adverse effects have been limited. We undertook a meta-analysis with novel methodology to identify and quantify these adverse effects.
METHODS: We systematically reviewed randomised controlled trials in breast cancer where at least one of the treatments was a bisphosphonate (zoledronic acid, ibandronate, pamidronate, alendronate or clodronate). Neoadjuvant, adjuva

Soccer referees are required to keep up with play at all times to ensure optimal positioning in making key decisions. While the physiological aspects of soccer refereeing have been extensively reviewed, other key areas of preparation and performance have yet to be considered in detail. We present a contemporary examination of methodological considerations for the interpretation of referees' match activities, the validation of fitness testing and training protocols, match and training injury profiles, and the understanding and development of perceptual-cognitive expertise. BACKGROUND: Bronchiectasis is characterised by excessive sputum production, chronic cough, and acute exacerbations and is associated with symptoms of dyspnoea and fatigue, which reduce exercise tolerance and impair quality of life. Exercise training in isolation or in conjunction with other interventions is beneficial for people with other respiratory diseases, but its effects in bronchiectasis have not been well established.
OBJECTIVES: To determine effects of exercise training compared to usual care on exercise tolerance (primary outcome), quality of life (primary outcome), incidence of acu
