Sinonasal cavernous hemangioma is a rare condition that usually affects the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. We report the case of a 77-year-old man who presented with severe epistaxis, nasal congestion, and olfactory dysfunction. Endoscopic examination of the nasal cavity revealed the presence of a red-blue tumor that had almost completely filled the nasopharynx. Preoperatively, it was difficult to distinguish this lesion from a juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. During endoscopic surgery, the tumor was found to originate in the left olfactory cleft, and it had a long peduncle that contai

BACKGROUND: Intracranial extracerebral neuroglial choristoma is a very rare entity. A cleft palate or a nasopharyngeal teratoma has been described as accompanying choristoma, but there are no observations of both anomalies being simultaneously present and combined.
METHODS: An 8-month-old girl presented with seizures, without evidence of any other neurological abnormalities. Brain magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a 2.0-cm-sized, round-shaped mass in the frontal midline. The T(1)- and T(2)-weighted images showed a well-circumscribed iso-signal intensity lesion with no gadolinium enhance

Epignathus is a rare congenital nasopharyngeal tumour that is derived from the upper jaw, palate, and sphenoid bone. It usually protrudes through the mouth, leading to an appreciable risk of obstruction of the upper airway and death soon after birth. We report two cases of unusual presentations that illustrated some uncommon and similar characteristics. Although these tumours are not consistent in origin, number, and differentiation of tissues, both contained structures that were derived from all three layers of germ cells, including different anomalous tissues internally (dental bud, fat and

Extramedullary plasmacytoma are rare plasma cell neoplasias. Eighty percent of these tumours grow in the ENT region. We report a typical case of a woman with a single tumour in the nasopharynx. Actually she is in complete remission after surgical and radiotherapic treatment. We also report an atypical case of a woman with a tumour in the nasopharynx associated with a cervical metastatic adenopathy and a plasmacytoma of bone. The treatment of this widespread disease was systemic chemotherapy. An update on this subject is done.

A full-term neonate developed acute upper airway obstruction immediately after birth secondary to a polypoidal mass in the oropharynx. After the child's airway had been secured, the mass was excised and found to be a nasopharyngeal teratoma, a rare congenital germ cell tumour which is frequently associated with other congenital malformations. It is sometimes possible to diagnose these tumours in utero, thereby enabling appropriate precautions to be taken during the delivery, otherwise if the diagnosis is unknown, then it is essential for any attending clinician to urgently secure the airway by

The histologic and immunohistochemical features of three congenital pedunculated nasopharyngeal midline masses are reported. The follow-up in all cases was uneventful. The tumors were characterized by solid and cystic squamous nests and ductlike structures focally continuous with the surface squamous mucosa of the tumor. Most of epithelial structures coalesced with densely cellular stroma-like nodules. Immunoperoxidase staining showed the presence of epithelial markers in both spindle cells and epithelial structures. Spindle cells were also reactive to vimentin and smooth muscle actin, reveali

Virus-associated human cancers provide unique opportunities for preventive strategies. The role of human papilloma viruses (HPV 16 and 18), hepatitis B virus (HBV), Epstein-Barr herpes virus (EBV), and retroviruses (human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] and human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus [HTLV]) in the development of common carcinomas and lymphomas represents a major cancer threat, particularly among individuals residing in developing countries, which account for 80% of the world's population. Even though these viruses are not the sole etiological agents of these cancers (as would be the ca

Epipharyngeal teratomas are rare congenital lesions that often cause respiratory distress, stridor at birth. The management of such anomalies should include establishment of secure upper airways, radiographic exclusion of midline CNS malformations and early surgical excision to prevent malignant transformation, asphyxia or permanent facial distortion. The diagnosis of congenital stridor, dyspnea and rhinitis should be performed very carefully.

The infectious aspects of cancer in humans were epidemiologically pioneered by Dr. David Burkitt through his observations of lymphomatous tumors seen in children in equatorial Africa. Years, later, the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was shown to be intimately associated with such tumors and is now recognized as a component of some B-cell lymphomas and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Still the questions of an active, passive, or accessory role persist. The ability of this virus to cause immunosuppressive hemopoietic disturbances in individuals infected with EBV but not developing cancer raise questions abo

Ten patients with a normal nasopharynx and 36 patients with pathology of the nasopharynx or skull base were studied with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Four millimeter thick axial, coronal, and often sagittal scans were obtained using SE 500/28 and SE 2000/56 pulse sequences. The normal scans were compared with cadaver cryosections. Correlation was made with computed tomography (CT) scans as well as with clinical history and physical examination whenever possible. MRI clearly provided superior information compared with CT and other imaging studies. Advantages of MRI over CT include 1) the d
