Advancing effective street outreach to people experiencing unsheltered homelessness: Concepts for public health nursing.

Homelessness, particularly unsheltered homelessness is a public health emergency in the U.S. Street outreach programs have demonstrated efficacy in connecting people to housing, initiating or retaining people in primary care, improving access to mental health services, and increasing treatment for substance use disorder. Effective outreach is generally characterized by trained, multidisciplinary teams that visit clients where they are, forming trusting relationships over time. Public health nurses working on outreach teams have opportunities to exercise their full scope and standards of practi

Model of Family Caregiver Resilience and Burden in Opioid Use Disorder: A Theoretical Framework.

This theory synthesis provides a theoretical model for nursing researchers to examine factors that influence resilience and burden in family caregivers of individuals with opioid use disorder. Two frameworks, the Resiliency Model and the Conceptual Framework for Family Involvement with Adults with Co-occurring Substance and Mental Disorders, were synthesized and modified by incorporating concepts and conceptual relationships from recent research studies and experiential knowledge from clinical practice to develop a new model. The model predicts the impact of caregiver characteristics, caregive

Nurse led telephone follow-up improves satisfaction in motorcycle trauma patients.

Telephone follow-up (TFU) is a good tool for providing transfer of health education, dealing with symptomatic concerns, early recognition of potential complications, and reassuring the patient after discharge. Telephone follow-up may also decrease knowledge deficits, increase communication improving patient satisfaction and patient outcomes to include decreased emergency department visits and hospital readmissions. An advanced practice nurse-led TFU program involving 59 motorcycle trauma patients discharged to home demonstrates how effective TFU can improve patient satisfaction in motorcycle t

Physical activity recommendations for adolescents with repaired tetralogy of fallot: review of the literature and guidelines for practitioners.

Evidence suggests adolescents living with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) have not been provided clear, understandable information regarding their congenital heart defect (CHD) and its implications on their ability to participate in physical activities. The majority of adolescents with corrected TOF can safely participate in all forms of physical activity, and individualized guidelines are available. This article will describe TOF, identify the educational needs regarding physical activity of the adolescent living with corrected TOF, review the evidence-based physical activity recommendations, and p

The importance of effective catheter securement.

This article examines the importance of securing/fixing indwelling urinary catheters. The Oxford English dictionary interlinks the two words-'secure' and 'fix'-as having the same meaning. To secure the catheter should not be confused with 'support', whereby the weight of the urine drainage bag is supported with the use of velcro straps or a sleeve. The author introduces the need for the concept of this practice to be at the forefront of nurses' minds in all settings, and this is demonstrated through the use of case studies. Current guidance in this area is reviewed, as well as the problems tha

The adolescent research participant: strategies for productive and ethical interviewing.

Nurse researchers who seek to study the experiences of adolescents have limited resources to assist them with the process. Although some elements of interviewing are standard practice, special approaches are needed for the adolescent participating in research. Interviews are especially challenging. The purpose of this article is to present strategies to assist researchers as they engage this cohort in research. These strategies include evaluating the adolescent's developmental level, designing developmentally appropriate questions, and refining interviewing techniques to optimize the experienc

Wound wise: wounds in surgical patients who are obese.

The number of surgical patients who are obese in the United States is rising, a trend that's likely to continue. Such patients are at higher risk than nonobese patients are for surgical site infections and other complications such as dehiscence, pressure ulcers, deep tissue injury, and rhabdomyolysis. This article details the factors that can contribute to such complications, including a high number of comorbidities, and offers practical suggestions for preventing them. Nurses should understand that special equipment, precautions, and protocols may be needed at every stage of care, and that ob

Total parenteral nutrition: how to reduce the risks.

Total parenteral nutrition has a number of associated complications. These include air embolism and haemothorax on insertion of the line, infection, catheter blockage, catheter-related sepsis and thrombotic obstruction. A nurse-led initiative was undertaken to improve the administration of TPN through the development of evidence-based practice. The aims were to keep the catheter free from infection and blockage, with an uninterrupted feeding period, irrespective of length of time. A study of 235 episodes of feeding over two years showed a marked reduction in complications, and resulted in a de

Daily struggles: living with long-term childhood technology dependence.

With advances in technology, children with chronic illnesses are surviving longer. This improved survival rate has resulted in a growing population of families caring for their children with complex needs at home. This grounded theory study explored how caring for a child who requires home ventilation affects family members. Families moved through a process of struggling daily as they cared for their child with complex needs. This ongoing struggle was characterized by three distinct dimensions: getting over the hump, starting to breathe, and having to deal with a subsequent event. Implications

Family members' experience of familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy disease--an infernal struggle and a fact of life.

Familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy is a fatal, hereditary, systemic, progressive amyloidosis. No previous qualitative study of the family members' experience of the disease has been published. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experience of family members whose nearest and dearest suffered from familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy. In-depth interviews were conducted with six family members. The analysis of the data was inspired by Colaizzi's method. Two major theme categories, difficult to accept and forced to accept, emerged from the interviews. Implicatio

Management of diarrhoea by the primary health team.

For all age groups, fluid replacement with oral rehydration sachets is the mainstay of treatment. Antibiotic therapy will occasionally be needed where specific pathogens have been identified. Traveller's diarrhoea may be alleviated with antibiotic therapy. Attacks of viral gastroenteritis in the under-twos are common. Consistent advice from health visitors, practice nurses, midwives and the GP helps prevent parents from receiving conflicting messages. *In a baby, colic accompanied by diarrhoea and especially by blood in the stool, needs urgent referral to a doctor--it could be intussusception.

An interdisciplinary mixed-methods systematic review of multidimensional factors shaping the outpatient waiting experience.

BACKGROUND: Patient satisfaction is a central indicator of healthcare quality and a key outcome in outpatient care. The waiting room, as the first point of contact, strongly shapes patients' comfort, expectations, and perceptions of service quality. Yet most existing studies remain confined within single disciplinary domains rather than integrated relationships among them. This lack of cross-disciplinary synthesis limits theoretical understanding and practical guidance. A systematic review is therefore needed to develop a comprehensive framework for improving outpatient experiences and support
