Taking the institution of the Italian Neuroectodermosis Register (Fois, April 1987) as a starting point, the Authors reviewed their own case-records, including six cases of neurofibromatosis and five cases of tuberous sclerosis, observed during the period 1982/88, and stress the need for early diagnosis (unfortunately often neglected), indispensable both for an effective prevention of any pathological involvement and for precise genetic counselling, susceptible of further improvements thanks to more and more advanced diagnostic techniques.

From 1983 to 1990, at the I Clinic of Infectious Diseases, Silesian Academy of Medicine in Bytom, 995 patients with meningitis and encephali … meningitis was as high as 80% of cases. In the group of purulent neuroinfections, during the 8-year observation, 36 deaths occurred (17.82% of these patients). The observed tendency of the death rate decrease is concerned to be a result of better microbiological diagnostics and the possibility of an early aimed antibiotic therapy.

Five patients with recurrent VT/VF resistant to medical treatment were successfully treated surgically. Itraconazole, a new oral triazole antifungal agent, was administered in 75 courses to patients with chronic coccidioidomycosis at dosages of 50 to 400 mg/day for a median duration of 10 months. Exertional heatstroke (EH) occurs when heat production, generated by muscular exercise, exceeds the body's heat dissipation capacities. This illness has been reported among young, active individuals, laborers, and religious pilgrims. Although EH includes a rectal temperature above 39.5 degrees C (depending on the timing of the measurement) and elevation of serum enzymes, altered mental status is the universally accepted sign which distinguishes EH from heat exhaustion. 1. There is still controversy about polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and temporal arteritis (TA), either expressions of a single disease or two different conditions with overlapping. Nearly 50% of TA present with a PMR syndrome and 5% of PMR have a positive temporal artery biopsy. 2. Biopsy is useful for diagnostic purposes but does not seem to have any prognostic value in the management of PMR and TA. 3. The best symptomatic treatment is represented by prednisone. Radionuclide angiography (RNA) and cholescintigraphy were performed prospectively in 300 patients with suspected acute cholecystitis (AC). Of 79 patients with positive RNA, 63 had AC (80%). Positive RNA was seen in 23 of 26 cases with gangrenous AC (88%) while 12 of the 26 had a positive "rim" sign (46%). All 12 patients with a positive "rim" sign had positive RNA. Pirodog (ND) is a novel vaccine against canine babesiosis. It is commercially distributed and has been used in France since May 1988. More than 150,000 dogs have now been vaccinated and the results of the immunization have been contradictory.
