Integrating HIV Into Sexual and Reproductive Health Services for Female Sex Workers in Buenos Aires, Argentina: A Comprehensive Model Designed Through Intersectional Collaboration.

INTRODUCTION: Female sex workers (FSWs) are at higher risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, due to occupation-related factors further exacerbated by gender-specific vulnerability and marginalization. Stigma and fear of disclosing their occupation pose multiple barriers that limit access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, as well as HIV testing, prevention and treatment. We describe the implementation of a tailored comprehensive SRH-HIV prevention and care model for FSWs, and report HIV prevalence, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and HIV treatment

Assessing health disparities faced by female paid domestic workers in Peru before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Female paid domestic workers are among the most vulnerable occupational groups globally, often lacking formal social protection and limited labour rights. The COVID-19 pandemic may have exacerbated these vulnerabilities, yet quantitative evidence from low and middle income countries is scarce. This study examines health disparities in Peru between female paid domestic workers and females employed in the formal service sector before, during, and after the pandemic. METHODS: We used pooled cross sectional data from the Peruvian National Household Survey (ENAHO, 2018-2023). The prima…

ETIOSARC study : environmental aetiology of sarcomas from a French prospective multicentric population-based case-control study-study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcomas are rare tumours of connective tissue. The exact overall incidence of sarcomas is unknown due to diagnostic difficulties and the various histological subtypes (over 80 subtypes). However, the apparent increasing incidence of sarcomas suggests environmental causes such as pesticides. Except for some specific factors (ie, ionising radiation, vinyl chloride, dioxin and genetic predispositions) the scientific knowledge on the aetiology of sarcomas is sparse and inconsistent. France is a particularly appropriate country to set up a study investigating the causes of sarcoma oc

Return-to-active-duty rates after anterior cervical spine surgery in military pilots.

OBJECTIVESymptomatic cervical spondylosis with or without radiculopathy can ground an active-duty military pilot if left untreated. Surgically treated cervical spondylosis may be a waiverable condition and allow return to flying status, but a waiver is based on expert opinion and not on recent published data. Previous studies on rates of return to active duty status following anterior cervical spine surgery have not differentiated these rates among military specialty occupations. No studies to date have documented the successful return of US military active-duty pilots who have undergone anter

Identification and measurement of diacetyl substitutes in dry bakery mix production.

In 2008, a company using multiple buttermilk flavorings in the production of dry bakery mixes replaced one liquid flavoring containing 15-20% diacetyl with a proprietary substitute meant to lower occupational risk for diacetyl-related bronchiolitis obliterans. Subsequently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated buttermilk flavoring-related exposures at this company's facility, with a focus on measuring ketones by several methods. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were evaluated in the headspaces of six bulk flavorings samples, including the substitute butt

Lactate and pH evaluation in exhausted humans with prolonged TASER X26 exposure or continued exertion.

OBJECTIVE: Safety concerns about TASER Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW) use and media reports of deaths after exposure have been expressed. CEWs are sometimes used on exhausted subjects to end resistance. The alternative is often a continued struggle. It is unclear if CEW use is metabolically different than allowing a continued struggle. We sought to determine if CEW exposure on exhausted humans caused worsening acidosis when compared with continued exertion. METHODS: This was a prospective study of human volunteers recruited during a CEW training course. Volunteers were from several differe

How do different standing positions affect trunk muscle activation in LBP-developers during prolonged standing?

BACKGROUND: Low back pain developers (PDs) are individuals at a high risk of developing low back pain (LBP), especially during prolonged standing. Understanding their characteristics is essential for devising effective preventive strategies. Prolonged standing has been associated with increased co-contraction of trunk muscles and elevated activity of the trunk extensor muscles. This study aims to examine the effects of using a normalized footrest height and altering arm positions on muscle activity in PDs. METHODS: Twenty-four female PDs, identified by a > 10 mm increase on the visual analog

Comparative analysis of isocentric 3-dimensional C-arm fluoroscopy and biplanar fluoroscopy for anterior screw fixation in odontoid fractures.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study. OBJECTIVE: To compare long-term radiographic and clinical outcomes of patients undergoing anterior odontoid screw placement using traditional biplanar fluoroscopy or isocentric 3-dimensional C-arm (iso-C) fluoroscopy-assisted techniques. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Anterior screw fixation of odontoid fractures preserves motion at the C1-C2 joint, but accurate screw positioning is essential for successful outcomes. Biplanar fluoroscopy image guidance is most often used; however, iso-C imaging improves the ease and accuracy of screw placement with le

Prospective role of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in attenuating hexavalent chromium-induced functional and cellular damage in rat thyroid.

Occupational exposure to toxic heavy metals may render industrial workers with thyroid-related problems. Here, we examined the role of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) against hexavalent chromium Cr (VI)-induced damage in rat thyroid gland. Potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) and ascorbic acid doses were 60 microg and 120 mg kg(-1) body wt (intraperitoneally [i.p.]) respectively. Treatment regimens were group I rats, saline treated control; group II, only K2Cr2O7; group III, ascorbic acid 1 hour prior K2Cr2O7; group IV, simultaneous doses of ascorbic acid and K2Cr2O7, and group V, a combined premix dose o

Acute modulation of respiratory pressure regulation and abdominal muscle activation during martial arts-derived respiratory-motor training with augmented feedback.

Respiratory pressure regulation contributes to trunk stabilisation and force transmission during physically demanding tasks. Traditional martial arts are associated with enhanced respiratory pressure regulation and trunk muscle activation, but the respiratory-motor strategies underlying these adaptations are time-intensive to learn and poorly understood. This study examined whether a martial arts-derived respiratory-motor training approach integrating augmented feedback (Neuropotency Training) could acutely modify respiratory pressure generation and abdominal muscle activation during force pro
