Agreement among orthodontists experienced with cone-beam computed tomography on the need for follow-up and the clinical impact of craniofacial findings from multiplanar and 3-dimensional reconstructed views.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aimed to assess interrater and intrarater agreement among orthodontic clinicians in their assessments of reported incidental findings in regard to both the need for additional follow-up and the impact on future orthodontic treatment in large-field maxillofacial cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 18 nonrandomly selected large-field maxillofacial CBCT volumes containing a reported total of 88 radiographic findings. All scans were associated with formal radiologic reports. However, the suggestions of further follow

Induced ankylosis of a primary molar for skeletal anchorage in the mandible as alternative to mini-implants.

BACKGROUND: Mesial protraction of mandibular posterior teeth requires increased anchorage to avoid undesired tooth movements. Orthodontic mini-implants have become a popular and successful way to increase skeletal anchorage in such cases. However, mini-implants may cause injury to adjacent teeth or anatomical structures and may lead to tissue inflammation. Induced ankylosed primary teeth have been used in the past as abutments for the protraction of the maxilla in cases of maxillary retrognathism. However, this technique has not been described in the literature for the protraction of mandibula

Limitations of a method used for adolescent assessment of smile aesthetics.

AIMS: To establish whether adolescent orthodontic patients with hypodontia have a preference between the aesthetic outcomes of two treatment strategies for lateral incisor agenesis. MATERIALS/METHODS: Standardized photographs of pre-orthodontic patients with missing lateral incisors were manipulated to produce images that represented space opening and tooth replacement in the lateral incisor space and space closure with canine substitution into the lateral incisor space. Adolescent orthodontic patients with hypodontia were recruited to assess the aesthetics of the images. A control group of s

Combined treatment of open bite - long-term evaluation and relapse factors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Some patients with open bite who have been treated with combined fixed orthodontic appliances and bimaxillary osteotomy relapse in the vertical dimension after the end of treatment following initially successful correction of the vertical dimension. The aim of this study was to identify those parameters that raise the tendency to relapse. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients who underwent combined treatment using fixed orthodontic appliances and bimaxillary osteotomy due to open bite (overbite < 0 mm), were examined and documented at least 2 years after surgery.

Intrusion of teeth with class III furcation: a clinical, histologic and histometric study in dogs.

AIM: To assess orthodontic intrusion effects on periodontal tissues in dogs' pre-molars with class III furcations treated with open flap debridement (OFD) or with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) associated to bone autograft (BA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Class III furcations were created in the pre-molars of seven mongrel dogs. After 75 days, teeth were randomly treated with OFD or GTR/BA. After 1 month, metallic crowns were assembled on pre-molars and connected apically to mini-implants by nickel-titanium springs. Teeth were randomly assigned to orthodontic intrusion (OFD+I and GTR/BA+I) group

[The application of the asymmetry index in assessment of mandible size in difficult diagnostic case].

INTRODUCTION: Recognised and unrecognised bone diseases including maxilla and/or mandible may have influance on formation of malocclusions. In first stages of diseases the patients are directed or report for orthodontic treatment which starting need additional examinations mainly pantomographic views. In spite doing necessary additional examinations sometimes we can't recognise disorder like patient presented in our study. Then we can observate and if changes will begin disturbing the function--surgical intervention. AIM: Establishment of orthodontic treatment plan and explanation if during t

Root resorption repair in mandibular first premolars after rotation. A transmission electron microscopy analysis combined with immunolabeling of osteopontin.

INTRODUCTION: A previous study with scanning electron microscopy showed that orthodontic root resorption occurs at the lateral surfaces of premolar roots for 2 to 6 weeks after orthodontic rotation. The purpose of this investigation was to observe how resorbed cementum repairs during rotation movement. METHODS: Twenty-one mandibular first premolars from 12 patients, orthodontically indicated for extraction, were used. They were intra-individually divided into 2 groups: 8 teeth were not moved (control group), and 13 were rotated (experimental group). In the experimental group, a rotational for

Patients' perceptions of recovery after routine extraction of healthy premolars.

INTRODUCTION: In this prospective study, we evaluated patients' perceptions of recovery after orthodontic premolar extractions. METHODS: Thirty patients (18 girls, 12 boys, mean age 14.6 +/- 3.8 years) were given a health-related quality of life questionnaire to be completed each postoperative day (POD) for 7 days. The questionnaire was designed to assess each patient's perception of recovery: pain, oral function, general activity measures, and other variables. The impact of possible predictor variables, such as age, sex, length of surgical procedure, number of simultaneous extractions, and t

Indications for autotransplantation in cases of missing premolars.

The postoperative behavior of premolars transplanted before completion of root formation and the long-term prognosis for such teeth have recently been studied. After postoperative observation periods ranging between 3 years 4 months and 13 years 9 months, all of the thirty-four teeth in question were found to still be in place. Root formation had continued, supporting tissues had developed, and the teeth had erupted. In most instances they had functioned normally without giving rise to problems of any kind. Their status during the re-examination implied that most of them would function normall
