Parent-Reported Barriers and Enablers to Establishing Sun Safety Practices with Young Children in Australia.

This study investigated parent-reported barriers and enablers to establishing sun safety practices with young children (0-4 years; N = 423) living in Australia. An online survey examined parent/child adherence to recommended sun safety practices and barriers and enablers to establishing sun safety practices. Adherence to different sun safety practices varied across age groups. Lack of child cooperation was the most commonly-endorsed barrier while child compliance was the most commonly-endorsed facilitator. Young children's lack of cooperation with sun safety practices represents a major obstac

Recent Incarceration Exposure Among Parents of Live-Born Infants and Maternal and Child Health.

OBJECTIVE: Women who have direct exposure to incarceration or indirect exposure through their partner are at high risk for poor health behaviors and outcomes, which may have lasting impacts on their children. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of recent incarceration exposure among women with a recent live birth and assess the relationship between incarceration exposure and maternal and child health. METHODS: We used data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (36 states and New York City, 2012-2015; N = 146 329) to estimate the prevalence of women repo

Youth at the intersection of parental incarceration and foster care: Examining prevalence, disparities, and mental health.

BACKGROUND: While there are various pathways by which children experience parental incarceration or foster care, involvement in either system is associated with adverse health outcomes. Despite co-occurring risk factors for parental incarceration and foster care, little is known about the prevalence or characteristics of youth navigating both of these experiences. OBJECTIVES: This study details the prevalence of youth at the intersection of parental incarceration and foster care, their demographic characteristics, and heterogeneity in their mental health. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data come

Parental divorce and smoking dependence in Lebanese adolescents: the mediating effect of mental health problems.

BACKGROUND: Lebanon has the highest prevalence estimates among Middle Eastern countries and Arab women regarding cigarette smoking, with 43% of men and 28% of women involved in such trends. Marital disruption is a tremendous source of irritability and discomfort that may hinder a child's healthy development, creating perturbing distress and increasing disobedience that may exacerbate smoking addiction. Additionally, Lebanese adolescents are inflicted by high emotional and economic instability levels, rendering increased susceptibility to distress and propensity to engage in addictive behavior.

Examining the unique contributions of parental and youth maltreatment in association with youth mental health problems.

BACKGROUND: Extensive research seeks to understand the intergenerational impact of child maltreatment. However, it remains unclear how parent's history of child maltreatment (PCM) is associated with child mental health, after accounting for children's experiences of maltreatment and other proximal risk factors. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the associations between PCM and youth internalizing and externalizing problems, while accounting for youth experiences of maltreatment (YM), and parent mental health and positive parenting. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Youth aged 14 to 17 years (N = 2266) …

Qualities of Children's Fear in Therapeutic Action Groups Addressing Post-separation Parental Stalking.

This paper examines the way in which parental stalking - as a form of domestic abuse - raises fear in children and affects their sense of safety. The study draws on three therapeutic action groups involving 13 children who have experienced stalking by their fathers/stepfathers after the parents' separation. The research question is as follows: How does children's sense of fear manifest in therapeutic action groups? The qualitative analysis revealed three qualities of fear among the children: (1) internalised, (2) constant and (3) episodic. Internalised fear appeared as a child's mental state t

Experiences of Parents with Opioid Use Disorder during Their Attempts to Seek Treatment: A Qualitative Analysis.

In the U.S., 12.3% of children live with at least one parent who has a substance use disorder. Prior research has shown that men are more likely to seek treatment than women and that the barriers are different; however, there is limited research focusing specifically on opioid use disorder (OUD). We sought to understand the barriers and motivators for parents with OUD. We conducted a qualitative study by interviewing parents with OUD who were part of an outpatient treatment program. Interviews followed a semi-structured format with questions on access to and motivation for treatment. The inter

Internalizing and externalizing correlates of parental overprotection as measured by the EMBU: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Aspects of parenting including overprotection explain individual differences in child adjustment. This review and meta-analysis summarizes studies on parental overprotection and internalizing and externalizing problems. To ensure that findings could be compared as systematically as possible, the focus was on studies that used the overprotection scale of the Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran ("Memories of my Parents' Upbringing") (EMBU) questionnaire, a popular instrument to measure parental overprotection. In total, we extracted 176 effects from 29 studies. A modified version of the Newcastle…

Shifting to a model of donor conception that entails a communication agreement among the parents, donor, and offspring.

BACKGROUND: Some persons conceived with donor gametes react negatively when they found their birth via donor conception. They request access to information about and seek to communicate with the donor. However, some countries mandate donor anonymity. Other countries allow donor-conceived persons to access donor information, but they can only use this access if their parents have disclosed donor conception to them. We investigated a thorny issue of donor conception: whether donor conception should be shifted from an anonymous basis to a non-anonymous basis. METHODS: We review the issues and co

Methylation of genes and regulation of inflammatory processes on emotional response in young adults with alcoholic parents.

Many Americans are adult children of an alcoholic parent (ACoA), which can confer an increased risk of trauma and hazardous alcohol use, as well as heritable and environmental genetic influence. Psychological health and related neural activity can be influenced by inflammation responses, but it is not clear how these factors interact regarding risk or resilience to hazardous alcohol use. The goals of this study were to better understand the relationships between current alcohol use and inflammation, how these are modified by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and/or epigenetic modification

Clinical Investigation of Chromosome Karyotype Analysis with Amniotic Fluids Cell and Parental Peripheral Blood.

BACKGROUND: Chromosome is the carrier of genetic material. Chromosome aberrations will lead to the increase or loss of genetic material, which is an important factor for early miscarriages and birth defects of newborn. Prenatal diagnosis is one of the effective approaches to find fetus with early genetic abnormalities. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of chromosome karyotype abnormality studies of 45 pregnant women with indications of amniocentesis, referred to Affiliated Hospital of Putian University, Fujian Province, Putian, China in 2015 - 2019, was performed. Among those, 45 cases of amn

Parent-to-Child Anxiety Transmission Through Dyadic Social Dynamics: A Dynamic Developmental Model.

The intergenerational transmission of psychopathology is one of the strongest known risk factors for childhood disorder and may be a malleable target for prevention and intervention. Anxious parents have distinct parenting profiles that impact socioemotional development, and these parenting effects may result in broad alterations to the biological and cognitive functioning of their children. Better understanding the functional mechanisms by which parental risk is passed on to children can provide (1) novel markers of risk for socioemotional difficulties, (2) specific targets for intervention, …

Communication practices of parents and unaffected sibling needs in families impacted by a diagnosis of Angelman syndrome.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurodevelopmental condition affecting approximately 1 in 15,000 individuals. To date, limited research elucidates how parents communicate about AS with unaffected siblings and their needs. This study aimed to understand if, when, and what parents are communicating with unaffected siblings. The study also evaluated unaffected siblings' knowledge of AS and their perceptions of their siblings with AS. Recruitment took place through social media platforms and a multidisciplinary Chromosome 15 clinic. Families were eligible for the study if they had a child diagnos

Long-read sequencing to resolve the parent of origin of a de novo pathogenic UBE3A variant.

Background The ever-increasing capacity of short-read sequencing instruments is driving the adoption of whole genome sequencing (WGS) as a universal approach to the diagnosis of rare genetic disorders. However, many challenging genomic regions remain, for which alternative technologies must be deployed in order to address the clinical question satisfactorily. Methods Here we report the use of long-read sequencing to resolve ambiguity over a suspected diagnosis of Angelman syndrome. Results Despite a normal chromosomal microarray result and methylation studies at the imprinted 15q11q13 locus, t

Parent-child age gaps in patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa and their associations with family dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Family factors are linked to the development of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). However, due to a lack of direct comparison, it is still unknown whether the two entities of eating disorders differ with respect to the age gaps between parents and their affected children. METHODS: In a cohort of 568 patients from the FamFINED study (FAMily Factors INvolved in Eating Disorders) diagnosed with eating disorders, we assessed the relationships between the parent-child age differences and family dysfunction, as determined by means of the General Family Questionnaire ("Allg
