Individual and joint exposure to air pollutants and patterns of multiple chronic conditions.

Existing research on the detrimental effects of air pollution and its mixture on multiple chronic conditions (MCC) is not yet fully recognized. Our objective was to examine if individual and joint exposure to air pollution is associated with the incidence and patterns of MCC. Totally 10,231 CHARLS 2015 participants aged over 45 years and 1,938 without MCC were followed up in 2018 and 2020. Residential-levelcumulative personal exposure concentrations of PM1, PM10, PM2.5, CO, O3, NO2, SO2, NO3-, Cl-, NH4+, and SO42- at the residential level were determined utilizing a spatio-temporal random fore

Risk and burden of low birthweight related to maternal PM2.5 exposure in Iran: A national causal inference study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been linked with fetal low birthweight (LBW), while national causal evidence is limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: We used nationwide registry-based birth records of 3839531 singleton livebirths, with maternal age (MA) between 15 and 49 years, across 31 provinces in Iran from 2013 through 2018. Monthly gridded concentrations of ambient PM2.5 during entire pregnancy were estimated through validated spatiotemporal models. We adopted traditional logistic/linear regression and double robust model (DR…

Residential exposure to air pollution and incidence of leukaemia in the industrial area of Viadana, Northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution has been proposed as one of the potential risk factors for leukaemia. Work-related formaldehyde exposure is suspected to cause leukaemia. METHODS: We conducted a nested register-based case-control study on leukaemia incidence in the Viadana district, an industrial area for particleboard production in Northern Italy. We recruited 115 cases and 496 controls, frequency-matched by age, between 1999 and 2014. We assigned estimated exposures to particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and formaldehyde at residential addresses, averaged over the…

Maternal diesel particle exposure alters gut microbiota and induces lung injury in rat offspring.

Maternal air pollutant exposure inhibits fetal lung development. Diesel exhaust particles (DEP) are one of the most substantial contributors to particulate matter pollution. The effects of maternal DEP exposure on gut microbiota in mothers and offspring and fetal lung development remain unclear. In this study, time-dated pregnant Sprague Dawley rats received intranasal administration of 100 μL phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or DEP (250 μg) in 100 μL PBS from gestational days 16-21. The dams were permitted to deliver vaginally at term. On postnatal days 0 and 7, gut microbiota was sampled from…

Causal relationship between air pollution and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in European and East Asian populations: a Mendelian randomization study.

Epidemiologic studies have suggested a possible association between air pollution and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but it is controversial and difficult to draw causal inferences. Five methods were adopted to evaluate the causal relationship between air pollution and COPD in European and East Asian populations by using MR Analysis. A statistically significant causal relationship between PM2.5 and COPD was observed in the European population (OR: 2.34; 95% CI: 1.06-5.05; p = 0.033). Statistical significance remained after adjustment for confounding factors (adjusted OR: 2.28; 9

Maternal exposure to air pollution alters energy balance transiently according to gender and changes gut microbiota.

INTRODUCTION: The timing of maternal exposure to air pollution is crucial to define metabolic changes in the offspring. Here we aimed to determine the most critical period of maternal exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5) that impairs offspring's energy metabolism and gut microbiota composition. METHODS: Unexposed female and male C57BL/6J mice were mated. PM2.5 or filtered air (FA) exposure occurred only in gestation (PM2.5/FA) or lactation (FA/PM2.5). We studied the offspring of both genders. RESULTS: PM2.5 exposure during gestation increased body weight (BW) at birth and from weaning to y…

The effects of prenatal PM2.5 oxidative potential exposure on feto-placental vascular resistance and fetal weight: A repeated-measures study.

BACKGROUND: Feto-placental hemodynamic deterioration is a critical contributing factor to fetal growth restriction. Whether PM2.5 oxidative potential (OP) affects feto-placental hemodynamics and what impact is on estimated fetal weight (EFW) have not been fully elucidated. We sought to evaluate the association of PM2.5 OP with EFW and to explore whether feto-placental vascular impedance hemodynamic change is a possible mediator in this association. METHODS: A repeated-measures study was conducted involving sixty pregnant women with at least 26 weeks of follow-up during pregnancy in Guangzhou,

Sipeimine ameliorates PM2.5-induced lung injury by inhibiting ferroptosis via the PI3K/Akt/Nrf2 pathway: A network pharmacology approach.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure can cause lung injury and a large number of respiratory diseases. Sipeimine is a steroidal alkaloid isolated from Fritillaria roylei which has been associated with anti-inflammatory, antitussive and antiasthmatic properties. In this study, we explored the potential effects of sipeimine against PM2.5-induced lung injury in Sprague Dawley rats. Sipeimine alleviated lung injury caused by PM2.5 and decreased pulmonary edema, inflammation and the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In addi…

Long-term Traffic-related Air Pollutant Exposure and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Diagnosis in Denmark: A Bayesian Hierarchical Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Limited evidence suggests ALS diagnosis may be associated with air pollution exposure and specifically traffic-related pollutants. METHODS: In this population-based case-control study, we used 3,937 ALS cases from the Danish National Patient Register diagnosed during 1989-2013 and matched on age, sex, year of birth, and vital status to 19,333 population-based controls free of ALS at index date. We used validated predictions of elemental carbon (EC), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), carbon monoxide (CO), and fine par

PM2.5-induced lung injury is attenuated in macrophage-specific NLRP3 deficient mice.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is one of the most important components of environmental pollutants and is associated with lung injury. Pyroptosis, a form of programmed cell death mainly mediated by the NLRP3 inflammasome, has been reported to be involved in sepsis-induced or ischemia/reperfusion-induced lung injury. However, the specific mechanisms of pyroptosis in PM2.5-induced lung injury are not yet clear. We constructed macrophage-specific NLRP3 knockout mice to explore the mechanism of PM2.5-induced lung injury in terms of inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and apoptosis levels, in…

Levels and sources of hourly PM2.5-related elements during the control period of the COVID-19 pandemic at a rural site between Beijing and Tianjin.

To control the spread of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in China, many anthropogenic activities were reduced and even closed on the national scale. To study the impact of this reduction and closing down, hourly concentrations of PM2.5-related elements were measured at a rural site before (12-25 January 2020), during (26 January-9 February 2020) and after (22 March-2 April 2020) the control period when all people remained socially isolated in their homes and could not return to economic zones for work. Nine major sources were identified by the positive matrix factorization model,
