Clinical effectiveness study of a treatment to prepare for trauma-focused evidence-based psychotherapies at a veterans affairs specialty posttraumatic stress disorder clinic.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) clinics in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) often provide psychoeducational or skill-building groups to prepare veterans for trauma-focused PTSD treatments. However, there has been limited evaluation of the effectiveness of this phase-based approach for treatment engagement and symptom reduction. Participants included 575 veterans seeking treatment for PTSD whose treatment outcomes were assessed in a VA outpatient PTSD clinic staffed by mental health professionals and trainees. Participants completed self-report measures of baseline characteristics a

Clinical study and some molecular features of Mexican patients with syndromic craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis is one of the major genetic disorders affecting 1 in 2,100-2,500 live newborn children. Environmental and genetic factors are involved in the manifestation of this disease. The suggested genetic causes of craniosynostosis are pathogenic variants in FGFR1, FGFR2, FGFR3, and TWIST1 genes. METHODS: In order to describe their major clinical characteristics and the presence of pathogenic variants, a sample of 36 Mexican patients with craniosynostosis diagnosed as: Crouzon (OMIM 123,500), Pfeiffer (OMIM 101,600), Apert (OMIM 101,200), Saethre-Chotzen (OMIM 101,400), and

Quality Initiative to Improve Compliance With Perioperative Anticoagulation.

PURPOSE: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in gynecologic oncology surgical patients. Many centers use neuraxial analgesia (NA), which affects the timing of prophylactic anticoagulation. In 2012, we determined that the rate of VTE in patients undergoing laparotomy with NA was higher than in those who received alternative pain control. In addition, compliance with preoperative anticoagulation guidelines was only 40%. We undertook a quality initiative (QI) project to increase compliance to 80% in NA cases and maintain 90% in non-NA cases. METHODS: A mult

Role of the lysyl oxidase enzyme family in cardiac function and disease.

Heart diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality world-wide. Lysyl oxidase (LOX) and related LOX-like (LOXL) isoforms play a vital role in remodelling the extracellular matrix (ECM). The LOX family controls ECM formation by cross-linking collagen and elastin chains. LOX/LOXL proteins are copper-dependent amine oxidases that catalyse the oxidation of lysine, causing cross-linking between the lysine moieties of lysine-rich proteins. Dynamic changes in LOX and LOXL protein-expression occur in a variety of cardiac pathologies; these changes are believed to be central to the associated t

Shortage of paediatric radiologists acting as an expert witness: position statement from the British Society of Paediatric Radiology (BSPR) National Working Group on Imaging in Suspected Physical Abuse (SPA).

One of the most challenging areas of radiological imaging in children is the diagnosis of physical abuse. There is a dearth of paediatric radiologists willing to act as expert witnesses, particularly in the family courts. There are a number of reasons why radiologists may not be interested or willing to put themselves forward to work as expert witnesses in this field. A group of imaging experts recently formed the "British Society of Paediatric Radiology (BSPR) Working Group on Imaging in Suspected Physical Abuse (SPA)". The group comprises radiologists and neuroradiologists with current or pr

Sociodemographic and disease-related determinants of return to work among women with breast cancer: a German longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Return to work (RTW) is a key parameter of outcome quality that ensures social participation. Therefore, this study analyses the sociodemographic and disease-related determinants of RTW among newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. METHODS: In a prospective, multicentre cohort study, breast cancer patients were surveyed three times: directly after surgery, after 10 weeks, and after 40 weeks. Logistic regression analysis was applied to estimate the association of RTW at 40 weeks following discharge with sociodemographic and disease-related characteristics (n = 577). RESULTS: The s

Preoperative incipient osteoarthritis predicts failure after periacetabular osteotomy: 69 hips operated through the anterior intrapelvic approach.

BACKGROUND: Untreated developmental hip dysplasia may result in pain, loss of function and is a common cause of osteoarthritis (OA). The periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) was developed to relieve symptoms and postpone further degeneration of the hip. We aimed to assess preoperative clinical and radiographic prognostic factors and evaluate survivorship of PAO after medium-term follow-up of 7.4 (2-15) years. METHODS: 59 patients (69 hips) operated with a PAO through an anterior intrapelvic approach from 1999 to 2011 were retrospectively identified. The patients were evaluated radiographically and
