Psychological Impact of Facial Trauma.

Examination of the mental state of patients suffering from facial trauma is rarely ever recorded, let alone screening them for posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSDs) or generalized anxiety disorder. Providing early support to the patient in light of such psychological conditions can improve the overall quality of life. The aim of this study was to perform a literature review to assess the relation of mental state disorders to facial trauma in terms of their prevalence, assess screening methodology, and also to evaluate the prognosis of individuals subjected to psychological intervention/screen

Error-related brain activity and internalizing disorder symptom dimensions in depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that enhanced neural reactivity to errors, measured via the error-related negativity (ERN), is relatively unique to internalizing psychopathologies (IPs) and symptom clusters characterized by excessive worry and apprehension. However, no prior study has tested the association between the ERN and IP symptom dimensions in a heterogeneous, clinically representative patient population. The current study was designed to address this gap in the literature and clarify the role of the ERN in an adult IP treatment-seeking patient sample. METHOD: Eighty-five participants c

Prevalence, clinical correlates and maternal psychopathology of deliberate self-harm in children and early adolescents: results from a large community study.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the prevalence and correlates of deliberate self-harm (DSH) in children from low- and middle-income countries. We investigated the prevalence of DSH and its clinical and maternal psychopathological associations in Brazilian children (n=2,508, ages 6-14y) in a community-based study. METHODS: Participants of the High Risk Cohort Study for the Development of Childhood Psychiatric Disorders (HRC) and their mothers were assessed in structured interviews. Current (last month) and lifetime DSH were estimated, including analysis stratified by age groups. Logistic reg

A negative view of menopause: does the type of symptom matter?

OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between the type of symptom and women's self-reported view of menopause. METHODS: The study was conducted at Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN, between January 2006 and October 2014. Women aged 40-64 were included. Data from 1420 women were analyzed in a cross-sectional design. The Menopause Health Questionnaire was used for symptom assessment. Odds ratios (ORs) and population attributable risk (PAR) (OR × percent frequency) were calculated for each symptom. Logistic regression analyses were performed with the view of menopause as the dependent variable. RESULTS

The neural substrates of response inhibition to negative information across explicit and implicit tasks in GAD patients: electrophysiological evidence from an ERP study.

BACKGROUND: It has been established that the inability to inhibit a response to negative stimuli is the genesis of anxiety. However, the neural substrates of response inhibition to sad faces across explicit and implicit tasks in general anxiety disorder (GAD) patients remain unclear. METHODS: Electrophysiological data were recorded when subjects performed two modified emotional go/no-go tasks in which neutral and sad faces were presented: one task was explicit (emotion categorization), and the other task was implicit (gender categorization). RESULTS: In the explicit task, electrophysiologica

Using early change to predict outcome in cognitive behaviour therapy: exploring timeframe, calculation method, and differences of disorder-specific versus general measures.

Early change can predict outcome of psychological treatment, especially in cognitive behavior therapy. However, the optimal operationalization of "early change" for maximizing its predictive ability, and differences in predictive ability of disorder-specific versus general mental health measures has yet to be clarified. This study aimed to investigate how well early change predicted outcome depending on the week it was measured, the calculation method (regression slope or simple subtraction), the type of measures used, and the target disorder. During 10-15 weeks of internet-based cognitive beh

Aerobic exercise training facilitates the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy in panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity has been discussed as a therapeutic alternative or add-on for the treatment of anxiety disorders. We studied whether aerobic exercise compared to physical activity with low impact can improve the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in patients with panic disorder (PD) with/without agoraphobia. METHODS: Forty-seven patients received group CBT treatment over 1 month, which was augmented with an 8-week protocol of either aerobic exercise (three times/week, 30 min, 70% VO(2) max; n = 24) or a training program including exercises with very low intensity (n =

The differential effects of written and spoken presentation for the modification of interpretation and judgmental bias in children.

BACKGROUND: Interpretation training programs, in which individuals are trained to interpret ambiguous scenarios in either a negative or benign way, have proven effective in altering anxiety-related cognitive biases in both children and adults. AIMS: The current study investigated whether the effects of the interpretation training procedure in children are differentiated according to the mode of presentation of the training. METHOD: Ninety-four primary school children (aged 10-12 years) scoring above the mean on a social anxiety scale were randomly allocated to four groups, in which they were

Effect of acupuncture at tender points for the management of fibromyalgia syndrome: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Affecting more women than men, fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a rheumatic disorder characterized by chronic, diffuse and widespread musculoskeletal pain, and its pathogenesis is still unknown. Among the recommended treatments, acupuncture (for its analgesic effects) is an effective option for reducing the pain sensitivity and improving quality of life. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether acupuncture at tender points could effectively manage FMS. METHODS: Eight female patients, with a previous diagnosis of fibromyalgia, underwent an initial assessment involving press

Diagnostic specificity and nonspecificity in the dimensions of preschool psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: The appropriateness of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) nosology for classifying preschool mental health disturbances continues to be debated. To inform this debate, we investigate whether preschool psychopathology shows differentiation along diagnostically specific lines when DSM-IV symptoms are aggregated statistically. METHODS: One thousand seventy-three parents of preschoolers aged 2-5 years attending a large pediatric clinic completed the Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5. A stratified probability sample of 193 parents of high s

Influence of long-term treatment with tuftsin analogue TP-7 on the anxiety-phobic states and body weight.

TP-7 is a synthetic analogue of tuftsin. It has a structure of tuftsin, to which three natural L-amino-acids Pro-Gly-Pro are attached. This heptapeptide improves learning and memorization and causes antidepressant and anxiolytic effect. It is possible to use TP-7 in the future to optimize cognitive functions and as a potential new anxioselective, fast-acting and easy-dosed drug. Therefore, it was purposeful to study such properties of the heptapeptide as its influence on anxiety-fear and body weight under a long-term treatment regimen. The experiment was performed on 24 preselected Wistar rats
