Clinical characteristics and outcomes of early-onset neonatal bacterial meningitis: a 20-year retrospective comparison of preterm and full-term infants.

BACKGROUND: To compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of early-onset neonatal bacterial meningitis (NBM) in preterm and full-term infants. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed neonates diagnosed with NBM within 7 days (based on symptom onset) of birth at authors' hospital (2005-2024). Participants were stratified into preterm (< 37 weeks) and full-term (37-42 weeks) groups. Data on perinatal factors, clinical presentation, laboratory results, and outcomes were compared. RESULTS: A total of 74 infants (33 females, 41 males) were included, with 17 in the preterm group and 57 i

Identifying the timing and type of inflammatory markers for potential prediction of preeclampsia in women with obesity.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a leading contributor to maternal and infant mortality, and early risk identification is a high priority. Inflammatory markers have shown potential as biomarkers for preeclampsia prediction, though optimal timing and marker selection remain unclear. METHODS: We measured 20 inflammatory markers using the Luminex platform across all three trimesters in 37 participants who developed preeclampsia and 74 normotensive controls, matched for pre-pregnancy body mass index (>25), smoking status, and race. We examined individual markers by trimester, changes in marker levels

Oxidative stress biomarkers in fetal growth restriction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) affects about 10% of pregnancies and is linked to higher risks of perinatal mortality and long-term health issues, largely due to placental insufficiency and oxidative stress caused by hypoxia and inflammation. This study examines key oxidative stress biomarkers to assess significant differences in FGR versus appropriate for gestational age (AGA) neonates. METHODS: This meta-analysis reviewed studies up to December analyzing oxidative stress biomarkers in cord blood from FGR versus AGA newborns. Key markers analyzed included malondialdehyde (MDA), super…

Liposomes-loaded miR-128-3p exert neuroprotective effects in hypoxia-ischemia injury by targeting Rgs1 in neonatal mice.

Perinatal brain injury due to severe hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is a significant cause of neonatal mortality and high prevalence of long-term chronic disease on a global scale, whose clinical treatment is still limited to therapeutic hypothermia with limited efficacy. MiRNA-128 is a brain-enriched microcoding RNA that is highly expressed in the central nervous system. In this study, we found that miR-128-3p expression, a predicted down-regulated microRNA (miRNA) in GSE213067, was significantly reduced in ipsilateral cortical tissues after HI injury in pups. Then we successfully constructed a well-d

Low-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation offers both immediate and delayed neuroprotection in neonatal hypoxia-ischemia model.

Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and the current standard of care, therapeutic hypothermia, provides only partial neuroprotection. This study investigates the potential of low-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation (LF-TMS) as a novel non-pharmacological adjunct therapy by targeting a key pathological mechanism of HIE: a persistent, pathological increase in glutamatergic synaptic transmission, or hypoxic long-term potentiation (hLTP). Using a neonatal mouse model of hypoxia-ischemia, we administered a single session of LF-TMS s

Serial Amnioinfusion Therapy for Treatment of Congenital Bilateral Renal Agenesis-A Systematic Review.

Serial amnioinfusion therapy (SAT) has emerged as a potential mitigatory intervention to adverse perinatal outcomes associated with congenital bilateral renal agenesis (BRA). However, its efficacy, safety, and ethical implications warrant thorough evaluation. This systematic review, developed according to PRISMA guidelines, analyzes the published data on outcomes of SAT for BRA and explores its implications. Inclusion criteria were a diagnosis of bilateral renal agenesis, therapeutic use of amnioinfusion, amnioinfusion procedure, and individual maternal and fetal outcome reports. A total of 19

SIRT5 suppresses the trophoblast cell proliferation, invasion, and migration to promote preeclampsia via desuccinylating HOXB3.

PURPOSE: Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-specific syndrome with increasing maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Succinylation, a post-translational modification event, has been found in various diseases. However, the role of succinylation in PE has not been explored. This study aimed to investigate the effect of succinylation on PE and the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Thirty-two PE patients and 32 normal pregnancy volunteers were recruited. Human extravasated trophoblast cells (HTR-8/SVneo) were used in in vitro study. RT-qPCR was performed to detect the expression of succinyla

Neonatal hair profiling reveals a metabolic phenotype of monochorionic twins with selective intrauterine growth restriction and abnormal umbilical artery flow.

BACKGROUND: Selective intrauterine fetal growth restriction (sIUGR) in monochorionic diamniotic twins, especially types 2&3 with abnormal umbilical artery Doppler, results in increased risk of fetal/perinatal mortality and postnatal disability. We investigate whether the hair metabolome profiles of neonates were associated with the pathophysiological differences across the different clinical forms of sIUGR in twins. METHODS: Hair samples were collected at delivery from 10 pairs of type 1 sIUGR twins, 8 pairs of types 2&3 sIUGR twins, and 11 pairs of twins without sIUGR. The hair metabolome wa…

Extreme Premature Small for Gestational Age Infants Have Appropriate Catch-up Growth at Term Equivalence Compared with Extreme Premature Appropriate for Gestational Age Infants.

Recent studies have shown that small for gestational age (SGA) term infants undergo catch-up growth during infancy but there is limited studies on early growth outcomes of extreme premature SGA infants. The aim of this study was to compare factors associated during birth in extremely premature infants less than 28 weeks’ gestation who were born SGA (<10th percentile for gestational age) with those who were born appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) (10th-89th percentile) and to determine whether there was catch-up growth at term equivalence. One hundred fifty-three extreme premature infants (8
