A 24-year-old lady presented to an evening genitourinary (GU) clinic with a short history of vulval and anal irritation. On perianal examination, several threadworms were visible. Symptoms resolved with oral mebendazole and strict personal and environmental hygiene. Threadworm is a common and easily treatable cause of pruritus ani, yet is underreported in GU literature. If the history is suggestive, consider performing the diagnostic cellophane test and/or prescribing empirical treatment.

20 subjects with traumatic brain injury were tested over a 4-wk. period for aggressive behaviors; orientation to place, person, and time; and compliance in speech-language therapy sessions. Analysis showed significant correlations from .63 to .75 over the four sessions between orientation and compliance in speech-language therapy and suggest that orientation training could be a prerequisite to the formal treatment of other behavioral or communication disorders.

Ultrasound investigations of the thyroid gland and determinations of microsomal antibodies have been performed in persons who lived in the town of Korosten (Zhitomir Region) during the Chernobyl accident. A high correlation has been found between ultrasound and immunological results. The immunological screening of the population suffered from the Chernobyl disaster might be successfully used for the autoimmune thyroiditis detection. These data complete those obtained by the ultrasound tests.

Orf, a viral disease of sheep and goats transmissible to man, is described in three patients living in Israeli cooperative settlements. Characteristically, the disease was manifested as a single, self-limited skin lesion in two of the patients, while in the third patient an unusual coexistence of orf and bullous pemphigoid was found. Not uncommonly, orf may be found in persons working with sheep and goats. Awareness of this disease by physicians may avoid unnecessary testing and treatments.

Dandruff is a sign of low specificity but high sensitivity for atopic constitution. Of 32 (40%) patients consulting the clinic for other reasons than dandruff, atopic dermatitis, or seborrheic dermatitis, 13 had raised IgE PRIST values of greater than 120 IU/ml. In only 6 (19%) of these patients was screening for atopy completely negative (family and personal history, total and specific IgG, prick test).

A usage-safety study involving two new dry skin formulations was conducted using a group of subjects with a history of atopic dermatitis. The results indicate that these formulations are safe in persons with inactive to mildly active dermatitis and are effective in alleviating the signs of dry skin, particularly on the legs. However, one individual with very active dermatitis developed an irritant reaction to one test formulation, possibly related to the fragrance contained therein.

Studies of motility of the stomach in 10 test-persons resulted in a significant reduction of motility after a 2-day period of perorally intake of Lyspafen. The active motoric substance is diffenoxin-hydrochloride. An addition of 0,025 mg Atropin sulfate could increase the effect. The effect is independent of the clinical diagnose. A "runaway" could be explained by an intolerance against lactose. The waves of type I are less influenced, such as the frequency of the waves of contraction.

Unhealthy alcohol use is associated with HIV viral non-suppression. It is unclear how common unhealthy alcohol use is among non-suppressed persons with HIV (PWH) who drink alcohol. We conducted chart reviews to recruit PWH in Uganda with recent viral non-suppression for a study on the efficacy of gabapentin for promoting viral suppression among those with unhealthy alcohol use. Studies in sub-Saharan Africa indicate that most HIV seropositive persons have HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). HAND diagnosis is facilitated by specific screening. The possibility for patch testing procedures to detect contact allergy was examined in 85 hospitalized patients with forms of psoriasis. Exclusion criteria were active lesions on the back, the use of strong topical corticosteroids, methotrexate, cyclosporin and UV therapy. Eighteen persons involved in an epidemic of blastomycosis were followed for a period of 3 years. None of the symptomatic patients received antifungal therapy and all recovered spontaneously.
