The toxic effects of mercuric chloride (HgCl2), emisan 6 (a methoxy-ethyl mercury fungicide), and methyl mercuric chloride (CH3HgCl) on the adrenocortical-pituitary activity of the catfish were investigated after 45, 90, and 180 days of exposure. The adrenocortical cells were highly stimulated in the 90-day HgCl2 group and became hyperplastic in the 180-day group. Cyclosporin (CYA) was administered to Wistar rats at immunotherapeutic doses (20 mg/kg) and the functional and morphological effects on pancreatic B cells were observed. Serum CYA levels were kept in the range that is often encountered in clinical immunotherapy in humans. The treated rats had slightly elevated plasma glucose levels; on treatment days 6 and 13, their serum immunoreactive insulin and pancreatic insulin contents were low. A prolonged case of pulmonary infiltrates with eosinophilia of the lung was submitted to a large immunological enquiry. The biological results, added to the immunofluorescence study of a lung biopsy, militated for a complex underlying immune mechanism with, on one hand IgE, eosinophils and mast cells, and on the other hand plasma cells and IgG.

Effects and interactions of opioids on plasma exudation induced by cigarette smoke in guinea pig bronchi.

The effects of opioids on cigarette smoke-induced plasma exudation were investigated in vivo in the main bronchi of anesthetized guinea pigs, with Evans blue dye as a plasma marker. Acute inhalation of cigarette smoke increased plasma exudation by 216% above air control values. Morphine, 0.1-10 mg/kg but not 30 mg/kg, inhibited the exudation but had no significant effect on substance P-induced exudation. Enhancement of intestinal IgA responses is a primary strategy in the development of oral vaccine. Dietary fatty acids are known to regulate host immune responses. In this study, we show that dietary palmitic acid (PA) and its metabolites enhance intestinal IgA responses. Intestinal IgA production was increased in mice maintained on a PA-enriched diet.
