Financial and economic costs of healthcare-associated infections in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) remain a global health challenge, and have elevated rates in Sub-Saharan Africa. HAIs impact patients and their families by causing illness, prolonged hospital stay, potential disability, excess costs and, sometimes, death. The costs of HAIs are increasing due to spreading antimicrobial resistance. A major risk factor for HAIs is lack of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); environmental cleaning and healthcare waste management. In Sub-Saharan Africa, these services are lacking in at least 50% of healthcare facilities. AIM: To estimate the

Contemporary Insights into Hepatitis C Virus: A Comprehensive Review.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a significant global health challenge. Approximately 50 million people were living with chronic hepatitis C based on the World Health Organization as of 2024, contributing extensively to global morbidity and mortality. The advent and approval of several direct-acting antiviral (DAA) regimens significantly improved HCV treatment, offering potentially high rates of cure for chronic hepatitis C. However, the promising aim of eventual HCV eradication remains challenging. Key challenges include the variability in DAA access across different regions, slightly variable

Blue Circle Health: A Novel Patient-Centered Model of Health Care Delivery for Low-Income Patients With Type 1 Diabetes.

Analog insulins, insulin pumps, and continuous glucose monitors (CGM) have revolutionized type 1 diabetes (T1D) treatment over the last 50 years. Nevertheless, less than 20% of patients in the United States reach guideline-based HbA1c targets. The dysfunctional delivery of U.S. health care has further worsened glycemic outcomes among structurally disadvantaged groups such as non-Hispanic Black and low-income populations. Administrative complexities resulting from mixed insurance coverage and delivery systems, incongruity between effective policies and reimbursement, structural racism, and impl

Electronic cigarettes in the indoor environment.

The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or "vaping") has seen an unprecedented increase worldwide. Vaping has been promoted as a beneficial smoking cessation tool and an alternative nicotine delivery device that contains no combustion by-products. However, nicotine is highly addictive, and the increased use of nicotine-containing e-cigarettes among teens and individuals who are not in need of smoking cessation may lead to overall greater nicotine dependence in the population. Furthermore, available research indicates that vaping solutions and their emissions may contain much more than j

The Costs and Valuation of Health Impacts of Measles and Rubella Risk Management Policies.

National and global health policymakers require good information about the costs and benefits of their investments in measles and rubella immunization programs. Building on our review of the existing measles and rubella health economics literature, we develop inputs for use in regional and global models of the expected future benefits and costs of vaccination, treatment, surveillance, and other global coordination activities. Given diversity in the world and limited data, we characterize the costs for countries according to the 2013 World Bank income levels using 2013 U.S. dollars (2013$US). W

Sociodemographic determinants of health inequities in low back pain: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Health equity is defined as the absence of unjust and avoidable disparities in access to healthcare, quality of care, or health outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a conceptual framework that outlines the main causes of health inequalities and how these contribute to health inequities within a population. Despite the WHO implementing health equity policies to ensure accessibility and quality of healthcare services, disparities persist in the management of patients suffering from low back pain (LBP). The objective of this study was to review the existing evid

Impact of first-trimester preeclampsia screening on perinatal and maternal morbidity: the RANSPRE open multicenter randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) affects 2–8% of pregnant women and is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. In high-risk pregnant women, low-dose aspirin (LDA 100—160 mg/day) started before 16 WG reduces the incidence of PE, prematurity, perinatal mortality and low birth weight. First trimester screening of PE allows the identification of a population of pregnant women at high risk of early onset PE and perinatal mortality. It remains unclear whether, on a population scale, the systematic implementation of first trimester screening of PE with treatment of high-risk p

Association of neutrophil-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio with all-cause mortality among individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: the NHANES database prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a global public health crisis linked to elevated all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. The neutrophil-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio (NHR) is an emerging inflammatory-lipid biomarker that integrates systemic inflammation and lipid dysregulation. However, its prognostic value for long-term mortality in NAFLD remains undetermined. METHODS: We conducted a population-based prospective cohort study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018. A total of 5,320 participants diagnosed with NAFLD

Temporal patterns of multiple long-term conditions in individuals with intellectual disability living in Wales: an unsupervised clustering approach to disease trajectories.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying and understanding the co-occurrence of multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) in individuals with intellectual disability (ID) is crucial for effective healthcare management. Individuals with ID often experience earlier onset and higher prevalence of MLTCs compared to the general population, however, the specific patterns of co-occurrence and temporal progression of these conditions remain largely unexplored. This study presents an innovative unsupervised approach for examining and characterising clusters of MLTC in individuals with ID, based on their shared disease tr
