In Asia, many activities of daily living (ADL) are performed while sitting cross-legged on the floor. This sitting posture rotates the pelvis in a more dorsal direction and lumbar lordosis is more flattened than while sitting on a chair. Sitting cross-legged induces a greater load on the intervertebral discs and spine, especially when in a slumped position that is known to increase disc pressure even more and to aggravate chronic low back pain (CLBP). In boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), treatment planning images are acquired in the recumbent position. However, treatment is occasionally performed in the sitting position. For BNCT treatment planning, we investigated the usability of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images using digital radiography equipment that allows imaging in the sitting position. The dose calculation results in both CBCT and fan beam CT were in good agreement. This method will eliminate the posture difference between planning and treatment.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hirayama disease, a rare neurological disorder, is characterized by progressive, asymmetric muscle atrophy of the forearm and hand in young male patients.
CASE REPORT: We noted two cases of Hirayama disease that appeared in the right upper limb and identified the cervical neutral and flexion position magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics.
CONCLUSION: In the flexion posture, the cervical MRI allows early diagnosis of Hirayama disease and should be considered in patients with the typical clinical symptoms.

Horizontal strabismus, the most common type of strabismus, can be complicated by the disorder of inferior oblique muscle or superior oblique muscle. It may cause problems such as compensatory head posture, vertical diplopia, torsional diplopia, and abnormal binocular fusion. In horizontal strabismus cases, the disorder of oblique muscles should be recognized, and appropriate surgical methods should be chosen, so that the best postoperative ortho and binocular vision could be obtained. Gingival fibromatosis is a benign oral condition characterized by enlargement of gingival tissues. It usually develops as an isolated disorder but can be one of the features of a syndrome. This case report is of a 5-year-old male with severe gingival hyperplasia and mild mental retardation which was complicated by open bite, abnormal occlusion, open lip posture, and disabilities associated with mastication and speech. Full mouth gingivectomy in single sitting under general anesthesia was done with electrocautery.

A 43-year-old man presented with dizziness, head instability, and facial reddening, always in relation to body posture and without fever or systemic manifestations. Chest radiography revealed a large cavity with an air-fluid level in the right upper hemithorax. A right upper lobectomy was performed to remove a large bronchogenic cyst. The presentation with cardiac but no respiratory symptoms is uncommon but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with intrathoracic cysts.

We developed a method for synchronous registration of electrical activity of the myometrium in pregnant rabbit females and electrocardiograms of the female and fetus on a paper tape and on PC in the online mode using an original pickup for registration of intrauterine pressure in awaken animals in a natural (sitting) posture. The method causes no pregnancy complications and is adequate for evaluation of uterine contractility, female and fetal status in different variants of the experiment.

Severe and early facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is relatively rare. In this report, we describe a case of severe, infantile onset FSHD in a patient with asymmetric progressive ptosis and early hyperlordosis. DNA analysis revealed a very short 4q35 allele of 8.6 kb and a somatic mosaicism for the 4q35 deletion detected in a subclinically affected parent of the patient. This case demonstrates difficulties in the management of abnormal posture, especially early hyperlordosis in children with this disorder.

The rationale and methods of evaluating two carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions at a field training exercise in hot weather are presented in this overview. The carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions were formulated to produce a multipurpose replacement beverage which could satisfy diverse requirements of troops working in hot climates. Several uses of these beverages include replacement of electrolytes and fluid while in Mission Oriented Protective Posture IV, fluid replacement for mild heat casualties, and oral rehydration therapy for treatment of diarrheal losses.

One hundred and thirty-three second graders in rural public school were assessed on a number of dental, skeletal, and oral muscle function measures. Correlational analyses were conducted in order to determine whether specific myofunctional variables were associated with dentofacial development. Significant relationships were observed between open mouth posture and a narrow maxillary arch and long facial height. Labial and lingual rest and swallow patterns were also related to poor coordination of lip and tongue movements.

The authors have developed a multidirectional tomographic unit to obtain sagittal images with the patient in the supine or prone position. The apparatus is particularly useful for examination of the vertebral column and sella turcica. It can be employed in circular (0 degrees -40 degrees) and spiral (10 degrees -32 degrees) motions. The apparatus provides correct and easy positioning of subjects with easy maintenance of posture. It reduces the distortional effects of respiration and thereby markedly improves reproducibility.

A new type of block vertebral malformation is described. A 42-year-old woman presented after an akinetic seizure. Routine cervical spine films, obtained because of a recent history of abnormal head posture, disclosed a vertebral anomaly. Computed tomography and conventional polytomography revealed that the lesion was composed of a butterfly vertebra as the upper portion of a pair of nonsegmented vertebrae. Vertebral fusion and segmentation anomalies are reviewed and compared with the specific features of this case.

6 patients developed a rash while working in a dry battery manufacturing industry. Patch tests showed that clothing accounted for the dermatitis in 5 of the patients. One of them who worked with bitumen had an acneiform eruption and eye irritation. Environmental measurements indicated excessive environmental heat, sweating and maceration as predisposing factors for the development of clothing dermatitis in workers who wore dark coloured uniforms. The working posture also made the anterior abdominal wall highly vulnerable.

Entrapment of the medial plantar nerve in the longitudinal arch causes burning heel pain, aching in the arch, and deficient sensation in the sole of the foot behind the great toe. Long distance valgus running may cause such a disorder in a jogger and the condition usually responds to conservative measures which include a change in running posture of the foot, anti-inflammatory medications, and proper footwear. The name "jogger's foot" is selected for this clinical syndrome.

The pressure in the ophthalmic artery was measured during change of posture from the lying position to the sitting position by means of Muller's ophthalmodynamometer. In 210 healthy individuals there was a fall of average pressure between 0 and 21 percent. In 89 patients having a certainly pathological fluctuation of 25 percent or more which could not be found in the brachial pressure. Such patients did not only have general orthostatic symptoms but also various ocular symptoms.

Prostaglandins E(1), E(2) and E(3), injected into the cerebral ventricles of unanaesthetized cats, produced sedation, stupor and signs of catatonia. The threshold dose was 3 mug/kg. Slight sedation was also observed following an intravenous injection, but a dose of 20 mug/kg was required. In chicks, intravenous injections of prostaglandins (10 to 400 mug/kg) caused respiratory depression, profound sedation, loss of normal posture and, with the higher doses, loss of the righting reflex.
