Beneficial effects of lactic acid bacteria on human beings.

Lactic acid bacteria are a diverse group of bacteria that produce lactic acid as their major fermented product. Most of them are normal flora of human being and animals and produce myriad beneficial effects for human beings include, alleviation of lactose intolerance, diarrhea, peptic ulcer, stimulation of immune system, antiallergic effects, antifungal actions, preservation of food, and prevention of colon cancer. This review highlights the potential species of Lactic acid bacteria responsible for producing these effects. It has been concluded that lactic acid bacteria are highly beneficial m

Current and future developments in travelers' diarrhea therapy.

Diarrhea continues to be the leading health problem among international travelers to developing tropical and semi-tropical regions. Despite more than 50 years of research providing information about the etiology and pathogenesis of the disease, the rate of illness and consequences remain unchanged. An estimated 40% of travelers to developing nations will become ill with diarrhea. Although travelers' diarrhea is considered a self-limited disease, novel and effective approaches to disease prevention and treatment have been realized in recent years. Also, recent evidence has identified a potentia

Current concepts in the evaluation, diagnosis and management of acute infectious diarrhea.

Despite recent advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of enteric diseases, acute infectious diarrhea remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Infection is the most common cause of acute diarrhea. Some causes of infectious diarrhea also result in serious long-term sequelae such as hemolytic uremic syndrome, Guillain-Barré syndrome and malnutrition. A better understanding of bacterial pathogenesis has grown increasingly important because of the emergence of new pathogens and the growing problems of resistance among enteric pathogens and other enteric flora. Non-anti

Antibiotic associated diarrhoea: a controlled study comparing plain antibiotic with those containing protected lactobacilli.

Antibiotic associated diarrhoea is known to occur with broad spectrum antibiotics. Lactobacillus has been used for prophylaxis and therapy of this condition. In a double blind controlled study, the antibiotic containing ampicillin (250 mg) and cloxacillin (250 mg) with or without protected lactobacilli was evaluated in 740 patients undergoing cataract surgery. The incidence of diarrhoea in patients receiving plain antibiotic was 13.3% compared to 0.0% in patients receiving antibiotic with protected lactobacilli (p<0.001). The study demonstrates that antibiotic formulations containing protected

Dual roles of oral and gut bacterial extracellular vesicles in central nervous system diseases: Pathogenic drivers and therapeutic vectors.

A growing body of evidence indicates that the oral and gut microbiota are closely linked to central nervous system (CNS) diseases, and their bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) play a significant role in disease pathogenesis. BEVs can cross the blood-brain barrier, deliver bioactive cargo to host cells, and participate in disease processes. Notably, BEVs exhibit a functional dichotomy in which pathogen-derived BEVs promote neuropathology while probiotic-derived and engineered BEVs exert protective effects. In this review, we systematically examine this dual role of oral- and gut-derived BE

Dietary ellagic acid inhibiting gastrointestinal pathogens by modulation of microbiome-metabolite-immune axis.

Antibiotic-induced depletion of the gut microbiota facilitated the colonization of vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) in the gastrointestinal tract, and then increased patients' susceptibility to secondary infections. Ellagic acid, a major constituent of fruits and nuts, showed various bioactivities except for antibacterial. Interestingly, it promoted the recovery of gut microbiota, enhanced microbial diversity and stimulated the proliferation of probiotic gut microbes, and then ameliorated the overgrowth of pathogens in vivo in our experiment. Moreover, ellagic acid activated Gpr41 and Gp

Mastocytic enterocolitis in a patient with chronic diarrhoea.

This is a case of mastocytic enterocolitis in a patient with a longstanding history of suspected diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D).A female patient in her 60s presents with a history of frequent diarrhoea with faecal urgency for several years. She underwent colonoscopy with gastrointestinal biopsies and immunohistochemical staining for CD117, demonstrating mast cell infiltration. The patient was diagnosed with mastocytic enterocolitis as she did not have symptoms or other findings suggesting systemic mastocytosis. Management with cromolyn sodium prior to meals was ineffect

The Role of Intestinal Microbiota and Diet as Modulating Factors in the Course of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Diseases.

Many researchers propose manipulating microbiota to prevent and treat related diseases. The brain-gut axis is an object that remains the target of modern research, and it is not without reason that many researchers enrich it with microbiota and diet in its name. Numerous connections and mutual correlations have become the basis for seeking answers to many questions related to pathology as well as human physiology. Disorders of this homeostasis as well as dysbiosis itself accompany neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Heavily dependent on external factors, modulation

Health benefits of fermented olives, olive pomace and their polyphenols: a focus on the role of lactic acid bacteria.

Fermented foods have regained popularity in Western diets for their health-promoting potential, mainly related to the role of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) during the fermentation process. Nowadays, there is an increasing demand for vegetable-based fermented foods, representing an environmentally sustainable options to overcome the limitations of lactose intolerance, vegetarian, or cholesterol-restricted diets. Among them, table olives and their co-products (i.e., olive pomace) represent important plant-origin matrices, whose exploitation is still limited. Olives are an important source of fiber

A Case Report of Bacteremia Due to a Symptomatic and Rare Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Infected Splenic Hematoma and the Ultimate Treatment Model.

We present the case of a 76-year-old male who presented to our hospital with a rare infection of Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The patient had a suspected urinary tract infection (UTI) secondary to a chronic indwelling catheter; however, when symptoms did not improve on standard therapy, blood cultures revealed the growth of L. rhamnosus. The patient was found via imaging to have a concurrent infectious splenic hematoma, and aspiration confirmed the presence of L. rhamnosus. The patient resided in an area nursing home and was a poor historian; however, it is conceivable that this infection was acqu

Incidence of virulence determinants and antibiotic resistance in lactic acid bacteria isolated from food products.

Background: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) confer beneficial health effects in humans. However, the safety of these bacteria and their potential to spread resistance in the environment must be evaluated. Materials & methods: Fifty-three LAB were isolated from different food samples and assessed for the prevalence of virulence determinants and antibiotic resistance profile. Results: Multiple resistance was reported for Lactobacillus brevis MIM04, having revealed phenotypic resistance to vancomycin (MIC >128 μg/ml), ampicillin, cefotaxime, oxacillin and gentamicin. Virulence traits (cylA, gelE, esp

Siderophore-mediated zinc acquisition enhances enterobacterial colonization of the inflamed gut.

Zinc is an essential cofactor for bacterial metabolism, and many Enterobacteriaceae express the zinc transporters ZnuABC and ZupT to acquire this metal in the host. However, the probiotic bacterium Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (or "Nissle") exhibits appreciable growth in zinc-limited media even when these transporters are deleted. Here, we show that Nissle utilizes the siderophore yersiniabactin as a zincophore, enabling Nissle to grow in zinc-limited media, to tolerate calprotectin-mediated zinc sequestration, and to thrive in the inflamed gut. We also show that yersiniabactin's affinity for

Mechanisms linking preterm birth to onset of cardiovascular disease later in adulthood.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) rates in adulthood are high in premature infants; unfortunately, the underlying mechanisms are not well defined. In this review, we discuss potential pathways that could lead to CVD in premature babies. Studies show intense oxidant stress and inflammation at tissue levels in these neonates. Alterations in lipid profile, foetal epigenomics, and gut microbiota in these infants may also underlie the development of CVD. Recently, probiotic bacteria, such as the mucin-degrading bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila have been shown to reduce inflammation and prevent heart di

A gastrointestinal anti-infectious biotherapeutic agent: the heat-treated Lactobacillus LB.

Experimental in vitro and in vivo studies support the hypothesis that heat-treated, lyophilized Lactobacillus acidophilus LB cells and concentrated, neutralized spent culture medium conserve the variety of pharmacological, antimicrobial activities of the live probiotic strain against several infectious agents involved in well-established acute and persistent watery diarrhoea and gastritis. Heat-treated cells and heat-stable secreted molecules trigger multiple strain-specific activities explaining the therapeutic efficacy of L. acidophilus LB. This review discusses the current body of knowledge

Nutrition considerations surrounding restorative proctocolectomy.

Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis has become the surgical treatment of choice for patients with ulcerative colitis and familial polyposis coli syndromes. Pouch construction uses the distal 30-40 cm of ileum, and there exists a potential for postoperative nutrition consequences. These include vitamin B(12) deficiency, iron deficiency, bile acid malabsorption, and abnormalities of trace elements, fluids, and electrolytes. Patients who have undergone an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis procedure often describe specific food sensitivities that may require diet alteration, e
