Fetal breathing and development of control of breathing.

Technical advances during the last several decades have greatly facilitated research into fetal physiology and behavior, specifically fetal breathing (FB). Breathing movements have been demonstrated in the fetuses of every mammalian species investigated and appear to be part of normal fetal development. In this review we focus on the methods of measuring FB and on some of the problems associated with these measurements and their interpretation. We also review fetal behavior, the role of the peripheral and central chemoreceptors in spontaneous FB, the fetal respiratory response to hypercapnia a

DSM-III disorders in preadolescent children. Prevalence in a large sample from the general population.

We investigated the prevalence of DSM-III disorders in 792 children aged 11 years from the general population and found an overall prevalence of disorder of 17.6% with a sex ratio (boys-girls) of 1.7:1. The most prevalent disorders were attention deficit, oppositional, and separation anxiety disorders, and the least prevalent were depression and social phobia. Conduct disorder, overanxious disorder, and simple phobia had intermediate prevalences. Pervasive disorders, reported by more than one source, had an overall prevalence of 7.3%. Examination of background behavioral data disclosed that ch

Measurement of therapy outcome and maintenance of gains in the behavioral treatment of secondary orgasmic dysfunction.

Choice of therapeutic goals and criteria used for evaluation of therapeutic outcome represent fundamental conceptual and methodological issues. The present investigation examined the relationship between how data were obtained (by retrospective questionnaire or ongoing daily self-monitoring), what outcome criteria were used (behavioral or cognitive-affective), whose data were being analyzed (the female or male partner), and when measurements were taken (at posttherapy or follow-up) in a sample of 23 couples with the problem of secondary orgasmic dysfunction in the wife. The results indicate th

The adaptive-style theory of schizophrenic development: current research with schizophrenics.

This paper first reviews the adaptive-style theory of schizophrenia that was published in 1973 along with the evidence gathered from normal male Ss. The theory emphasized the importance of perceived maternal behaviors in the development of maladaptive social and cognitive styles for the son. The problems of interpreting data gathered from normals in terms of their implications for schizophrenic development are considered in the present paper, as well as the rules of evidence adopted for post-1973 research with mental patients bearing upon the adaptive-style theory. Theory relevance and support

Teaching clinic conference participant interaction.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the talk behaviors that occur during teaching clinic supervisory conferences. Two matched groups of five clinicians participated in teaching clinic supervision for 4 wk. Two supervisors alternately supervised both groups. The teaching clinic conferences were videotaped at the end of the second and fourth week. Segments of the conferences were coded using the Multidimensional Observational System for the Analysis of Interactions in Clinical Supervision (MOSAICS). Supervisors, peers, and clinicians did not differ statistically in quantity or in categories

Prevalence and constituency of behavioral disturbance taxonomies in the regular school population.

The Bristol Social Adjustment Guides (BSAG) are widely employed in research and in the identification of maladjustment in school children. The BSAG provides scores on several indices including five homogeneous behavioral syndromes and one associated grouping. Field experience suggests that maladjusted children frequently manifest problems in more than one syndrome. In order to discover what patterns of syndromic profiles may commonly exist among children, the data for the most recent revision of the BSAG are reanalyzed. The syndrome scores for all 2,527 5- to 15-year-old regular school childre

Transdiagnostic behavioral and sociodemographic influences on the cognitive-adaptive functioning gap in neurodivergent children.

Adaptive functioning typically aligns with cognitive ability in the general population, but this relationship appears more complex in neurodivergent populations. Individuals with autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently show a discrepancy between cognitive ability and adaptive functioning. However, the behavioral and sociodemographic factors associated with this cognitive-adaptive functioning gap remain unclear. Data were collected from the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Disorders Network (POND) and included 902 partici

Identifying understudied correlations between autism & phenotypic attributes in a large family dataset.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental condition marked by restricted, repetitive behaviors and social communication difficulties, is one of the fastest-growing pediatric behavioral health concerns in the United States. Long-term outcomes significantly improve with early intervention, but diagnosis and treatment are complicated by the large range of phenotypic presentations that can be moderated by identity factors like gender and culture. Many physical and behavioral characteristics associated with the autism phenotype are not included in the screening and diagnostic

Brain microstructural antecedents of visual difficulties in infants born very preterm.

Infants born very preterm (VPT) are at risk of later visual problems. Although neonatal screening can identify ophthalmologic abnormalities, subtle perinatal brain injury and/or delayed brain maturation may be significant contributors to complex visual-behavioral problems. Our aim was to assess the micro and macrostructural antecedents of early visual-behavioral difficulties in VPT infants by using diffusion MRI (dMRI) at term-equivalent age. We prospectively recruited a cohort of 262 VPT infants (≤32 weeks gestational age [GA]) from five neonatal intensive care units. We obtained structural a

Psychosocial Determinants of Insomnia in Adolescents: Roles of Mental Health, Behavioral Health, and Social Environment.

UNLABELLED: The theoretical explanation of human problems is derived from the complex interplay of psychological, social, economic, political, and physical factors. AIMS: This study examined the roles of behavioral health (i.e., alcohol abuse and suicidality) and social environment (i.e., family support, school connectedness, and favorable neighborhood) and mental health [i.e., depression, anxiety, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)] in predicting insomnia in adolescents in an ecological perspective. METHODS: Approximately 6445 high school students in Taiwan were administere

Examining the Clinical Correlates of Overeating and Binge-Eating Behaviors Among U. S.  Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Pressure to meet U.S. military weight requirements during service may predispose some service members to develop psychiatric disorders such as eating disorders or unhealthy eating behaviors, which may persist after military discharge. Specifically, research examining U.S. military veterans has found that in weight management programs, veterans with binge-eating behaviors have shown poor treatment outcomes. Overall, previous research suggests that veterans experience considerable and persistent disordered eating problems, and in addition may experience a higher prevalence of disor

Infancy predictors of functional somatic symptoms in pre- and late adolescence: a longitudinal cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Physiological regulatory problems in infancy (i.e., problems with sleeping, feeding, and tactile reactivity) have been associated with impairing functional somatic symptoms (FSS) at ages 5-7. We aimed to extend this finding by examining not only the association of physiological regulatory problems but also other infancy factors (i.e., emotion dysregulation and contact problems) with FSS in pre- and late adolescence. Standardized behavioral assessments and self-report questionnaire data from assessment waves at 0-1, 11-12, and 16-17 years of the population-based Copenhagen Child Coh

Effects of Prenatal Opioid Exposure on the Brain and Neurodevelopment.

The literature suggests that prenatal opioid exposure is associated with smaller brain volumes, differences in brain structural and functional connectivity, lower scores in most developmental domains, and more problems with behavior and vision. However, it is unclear whether these relationships are causal, given the complexities of other exposures and environmental factors that contribute to brain development. In addition, in studies using standardized measures, the means of the exposed children are still within the normal range, although lower than unexposed children.

[A history of childhood obesity acts as a barrier to the recovery from mental anorexia in adolescence ?].

High rates of obesity, unhealthy eating behaviors, and eating disorders among children and adolescents have a very negative impact on their physical and mental health. The role of pediatricians and general practitioners is central in terms of prevention and screening. When a referral to a specialist is necessary, it is important to consider the bidirectional relationship between eating disorders and mental health problems. A history of obesity in a patient with mental anorexia leads to the need for specific management, particularly in relation to the concept of Weight Suppression (WS).

Combatting the Opioid Crisis From Prison: Initiating Opioid Agonist Therapy.

Presented is a case report of a young man dependent on fentanyl who did not receive opioid agonist therapy (OAT) during incarceration. Highlighted are the barriers to accessing OAT in custody, which exacerbates problems with drug-seeking behavior, diversion, and recidivism. Discussed are the implications for correctional healthcare, including the benefits of utilizing telehealth services to maximize accessibility to OAT in correctional institutions that will not only enhance the quality of patient care but also address the growing opioid epidemic across Canada.

Temporal distributions of crime and disorder in casino and non-casino zones.

Research on the relationship between casinos and crime has yielded mixed conclusions. Some authors argue that casinos are crime attractors and provide fertile grounds for disorder in the surrounding communities. Others claim that the impact of casinos on the crime problem has been over-stated and that casinos in themselves are not crime generators. Relying on calls for service and incidents known to the police, this research reveals the specific spatial and temporal characteristics of all criminal and disorderly behaviors around casino venues.

Assessment and management of the obese adult female: a clinical update for providers.

Obesity is epidemic in the United States, affecting 61% of adults and 14% of children. Today's health care providers should recognize obesity as a chronic disease and offer up-to-date information and management. Treatment options currently available are diet and behavior modification, medications, and surgical procedures. Implications for clinical practice include recognition of the problems associated with obesity, education of current patients as well as young women who may become patients, and appropriate diagnosis and management or referral.
