Choriocapillaris perfusion assessed using optical coherence tomography angiography depends on eye color and projection artifact removal.

AIM: To study variation of choriocapillaris perfusion displayed with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in dependence of the eye pigmentation. METHODS: Healthy individuals and patients with resolved central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) with blue or brown eyes were enrolled in this study. Analysis of choriocapillaris flow voids number was performed based on averaged 3 mm OCTA scans with and without projection artifact removal (PAR). The number and total area of flow voids taken every 1000 µm2 between 1 and 5000 µm2, was calculated and compared between blue and brown eyes. RESU

Parapapillary choroidal microvasculature dropout in nonglaucomatous healthy eyes.

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence of parapapillary choroidal microvasculature dropout (MvD) in nonglaucomatous healthy eyes using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and to characterize the MvD observed in these eyes. METHODS: Seventy-six eyes (19 eyes with an MvD and 57 age-matched eyes without an MvD) from a cohort of 297 nonglaucomatous healthy eyes that underwent OCTA were included. The peripapillary choroidal microvasculature was evaluated in en-face images obtained using swept-source OCTA. An MvD was defined as a focal sectoral capillary dropout with no visible microvascul

VASCULAR ALTERATIONS REVEALED WITH OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY ANGIOGRAPHY IN PATIENTS WITH CHOROIDEREMIA.

PURPOSE: Choroideremia is a rare degenerative retinal disease that causes incurable blindness. It occurs as a result of the deficiency of the X-linked CHM gene, which encodes the Rab escort protein 1 (REP1). Gene therapy has been developed to treat CHM using adeno-associated viral vectors and is currently undergoing clinical trials. Expression of the CHM gene is ubiquitous throughout the retina, and it is therefore important to identify which retinal layers are affected in the disease process. The purpose of this study was to assess in particular the choriocapillaris using optical coherence to

Can optical coherence tomography replace fluorescein angiography in detection of ischemic diabetic maculopathy?

BACKGROUND: We studied the association between (1) the retinal thickness, volume and structure assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT), and (2) vascular changes around the fovea in FA to define the role of these methods in the detection of ischemic diabetic maculopathy. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 51 eyes of 51 patients with severe non-proliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy, considering that they present advanced ischemic retinal changes. Based on the clinical examination and presence of leakage on FA, patients with clinically significant macu

Assessment of glial function in the in vivo retina.

Glial cells, traditionally viewed as passive elements in the CNS, are now known to have many essential functions. Many of these functions have been revealed by work on retinal glial cells. This work has been conducted almost exclusively on ex vivo preparations and it is essential that retinal glial cell functions be characterized in vivo as well. To this end, we describe an in vivo rat preparation to assess the functions of retinal glial cells. The retina of anesthetized, paralyzed rats is viewed with confocal microscopy and laser speckle flowmetry to monitor glial cell responses and retinal b

Cystic maculopathy with normal capillary permeability secondary to docetaxel.

BACKGROUND: Cystic maculopathy without leakage on fluorescein angiography has been described in cases of toxicity to niacin. We present a similar case of cystic maculopathy due to docetaxel (Taxotere) in the treatment of breast cancer. CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old Asian female presented with complaints of decreased vision soon after the initiation of treatment for breast cancer with docetaxel. A cystic maculopathy with a normal fluorescein angiogram was found on examination. Significant improvement in visual acuity along with resolution of the cystic maculopathy was found after changing to an a

Imaging a child's fundus without dilation using a handheld confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope.

Images of the fundus were acquired in children without pupil dilation using a prototype handheld confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO). A 780-nm laser beam imaged a 20 degrees x 20 degrees area of the fundus while a 645-nm beam scanned a fixation target. Scorable images of the optic nerve, macula, and vessels were obtained in 67 (72%) of 93 eyes from pediatric patients with nystagmus, amblyopia, media opacities, or optic nerve or macular abnormalities. Images were obtained in all eyes of pediatric and adult controls. Unsuccessful imaging was associated with media opacities, high refract
