The term "emerging diseases" has been used recently to refer to different scenarios, all of which indicate changes in the dynamics of disease in the population. Of the OIE List A diseases, major changes have been experienced with rinderpest, peste des petit ruminants (PPR), contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), foot-and-mouth disease, African swine fever, lumpy skin disease, and Rift Valley fever. Rinderpest represents a success story of the 1990s, thanks to the programs of the Pan African Rinderpest Campaign (PARC). The situation has changed from that of the 1980s when rinderpest was wide…

Listeria app, isolated from 13 of 129 (10%) corn silage samples, 21 of 76 (28%) hay silage samples, and 3 of 5 (60%) grass silage samples during a previous Vermont survey were subjected to automated ribotype (RT) analysis. The 13 positive corn silage samples contained 3 Listeria monocytogenes isolated (three RTs, including one known clinical RT) and 10 L. innocua isolates (four RTs). Similarly, 2 L. monocytogenes isolates (two RTs) and 19 L. innocua isolates (three RTs) were identified in the 21 positive hay silage samples. The three positive grass silage samples contained two L. innocua isola

The sudden death of Pablo Picasso's closest friend Carlos Casagemas in 1901 came as a great shock to the young Picasso. From a young age, Picasso had ruminated on life and death; however, this was his first experience of bereavement. Following the death of Casagemas, Picasso's paintings can be seen as a diary of his grieving process and clearly illustrate the five stages of the grieving process as outlined by Kubler-Ross in 'On Death and Dying' (1969).

Clinical research on the purely obsessional patient is considerably less developed than that for compulsive ritualizers or obsessive compulsives with mixed features. A single case investigation of exposure therapy in the treatment of obsessive ruminations is presented. Treatment involved exposing the patient to a variety of stimuli related to obsessional thoughts including reading, writing, and listening to such content. The patient's immediate response to treatment was favorable, with improvements being maintained at two-year follow-up.

Blackleg is a necrotizing, hemorrhagic, and emphysematous myositis of ruminants caused by Clostridium chauvoei. Here, we report a previously unrecognized manifestation of blackleg in calves characterized by multifocal, transmural intestinal necrosis. Two, 3- and 6-month-old beef calves without history of vaccination against clostridial diseases died following acute muscular disease. Gross and histologic changes were consistent with blackleg, including emphysematous and necrotizing myositis with gram-positive bacilli. Both calves had sharply demarcated areas of transmural, intestinal coagulativ…

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an important mosquito-borne virus that can cause severe disease manifestations in humans including ocular damage, vision loss, late-onset encephalitis, and hemorrhagic fever. In ruminants, RVFV can cause high mortality rates in young animals and high rates of abortion in pregnant animals resulting in an enormous negative impact on the economy of affected regions. To date, no licensed vaccines in humans or anti-RVFV therapeutics for animal or human use are available. The development of reverse genetics has facilitated the generation of recombinant infectious vi…

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) responsible for a severe zoonotic disease affecting a wide range of domestic and wild ruminants as well as humans. RVFV is endemic in many African countries and has also caused outbreaks in Madagascar and Arabian Peninsula. With regard to its wide geographical distribution, its potential to emerge in a new area, and its capability to trigger major health and economic crisis, it is essential to study and better understand several aspects of its life cycle and, in particular, its interactions with mammalian hosts and arthropo…

Incubation with estrous sheep serum (ESS) is required to induce in vitro capacitation of spermatozoa during in vitro fertilization of small ruminants. However, the effect of adding different serum concentrations in the fertilization media on the quality of resulting blastocysts has not yet been studied. Here, 298 sheep oocytes were co-incubated with capacitated spermatozoa with either 10% or 2% ESS. There were no differences between treatments in cleavage (10% ESS: 63.81 ± 5.87% and 2% ESS: 45.31 ± 5.87%) and blastocyst rates (10% ESS: 20.83 ± 2.12% and 2% ESS: 15.93 ± 2.12%). Nonetheless, in …

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, which causes abortions in domestic ruminants. This study aims to assess the seroprevalence of Q fever among ewes and investigate the associated risk factors in the Ain Defla region (north-central Algeria). Blood samples from 184 ewes were randomly collected from 45 sheep flocks. Sera were tested for the presence of antibodies against C. burnetii using an ELISA test. Seroprevalence was 24.9% and 66.7% at the animal and flock levels respectively. Univariate analysis at the animal level indicated three factors significantly associated with…

Leptospirosis in ruminants causes reproductive failures leading to important economic losses. This study assessed the occurrence and genetically identified Leptospira spp. in the follicular fluid (FF) of naturally infected live cows. A total of 251 asymptomatic cows from different commercial dairy herds were subjected to ovum-pick up technique for follicular fluid sampling. PCR was performed for Leptospira spp. detection and phylogenetic analysis was later implemented for sequencing. From 251 samples analyzed, 67 (26.7 %) were lipL32-PCR positive, confirming the presence of leptospiral DNA on …

The World Health Organization has included three bunyaviruses posing an increasing threat to human health on the Blueprint list of viruses likely to cause major epidemics and for which no, or insufficient countermeasures exist. Here, we describe a broadly applicable strategy, based on llama-derived single-domain antibodies (VHHs), for the development of bunyavirus biotherapeutics. The method was validated using the zoonotic Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) and Schmallenberg virus (SBV), an emerging pathogen of ruminants, as model pathogens. VHH building blocks were assembled into highly potent n…

Wesselsbron virus (WSLV) is a neglected, mosquito-borne flavivirus that is endemic to the African continent. The virus is teratogenic to ruminants and causes a self-limiting febrile illness in humans. Wesselsbron disease manifests with similar clinical signs and occurs in the same areas under the same climatic conditions as Rift Valley fever, which is therefore included in the differential diagnosis. Although the gross pathology of WSLV infection in pregnant ewes is reported in literature, the pathogenesis that leads to stillbirths, congenital malformations and abortion has remained undescribe…

The use of vaccines has proven to be very effective in controlling and eradicating infectious diseases, both in veterinary and human medicine; however, vaccines can be also the source of an array of problems caused by procedures such as overimmunization. Bluetongue, an orbiviral disease that affects ruminants, is best controlled by the use of inactivated vaccines. During the last years of the past decade, these vaccines were applied all over Europe to control the spreading of the disease, a goal that was accomplished; however, at the same time, several adverse effects related to the vaccinatio…
