Streptococcus agalactiae (SA) is a Group B Streptococcus, which is a common pathogen implicated in neonatal and geriatric sepsis. Endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis (EBE) is a condition that results from haematogenous seeding of the globe, during transient or persistent bacteremia. We document a case of a non-septic geriatric patient, who developed EBE after a transient bacteraemia with SA.

Inhalation of contaminated aerosols is considered the most common route of Legionella transmission. The aim of this study was to determine whether contact with water contaminated by Legionella was related to oropharyngeal colonization in immunosuppressed patients. Eighty-five oropharyngeal swabs (April 1996 to June 1996) were seeded on selective and nonselective buffered charcoal-yeast extract media. Legionella was not isolated.

In this issue of Cancer Cell, García-Gómez et al. show that brain-seeding cancer cells exploit an MXD4-dependent proliferative pause that enables survival under stress before metastatic outgrowth. By restraining MYC and activating protective stress responses, this pause becomes an Achilles' heel, potentially targetable to eradicate micrometastases before clinical relapse.

Evidence has recently been reported of prion seeding activity in skin tissue from patients with sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD). This is relevant information for infection control measures during surgery. The work uses very sensitive prion assays now available for medical research, and may soon be adapted to related neurodegenerative disorders.

Endometriosis is a rare entity, related after operation on the uterus or uterine tubes or a laparotomy procedures or other extrapelvic procedures, when seeding of endometrial fragments were shed into the peritoneal cavity. We report the case of a menopaused woman with a subcutaneous incisional scar mass that appeared 22 years after a caesarean section. The diagnosis was made by histological examination.

The U.K. government last week endorsed a report that advocates tapping embryos for their stem cells, unspecialized cells that may ultimately serve as seed material for growing tissues to treat diseases. It also opens the door to cloning human embryos for research--an activity that has triggered sharp debate. Legislation implementing the recommendations will go to Parliament for a vote this fall.

A 37-year-old man exhibited a suprasellar tumor which histologically proved to be a myxopapillary ependymoma. Since these gliomas are virtually restricted to the cauda equina region, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed which revealed multiple spinal tumors. The present case seems to be the first report on spontaneous intracranial seeding of a spinal myxopapillary ependymoma.

This is a case report of generalized miliary tuberculous infection in a 80-year old white male without the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, whose death was caused by progressive hematogenous seeding similar to those cases of preantibiotic era. The importance of autopsy studies to uncover silent or protean infections specially in cases of cryptic or chronic hematogenous miliary tuberculosis, is emphasized.

Distant visceral metastases were found in 15 of 32 cases of pleural mesothelioma (47%). Contrary to earlier reports pleural mesothelioma should be regarded as a tumour in which visceral metastases are not uncommon. No association was found between the histological type of mesothelioma and visceral metastases; the peritoneal involvement found in five cases is probably due to local infiltration and seeding.
