Adapting integrative cognitive-affective therapy for adolescents with full and subthreshold bulimia nervosa: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Integrative Cognitive Affective Therapy (ICAT) is an empirically supported treatment for bulimia nervosa (BN) in adults. However, it is unclear whether a modified version, Integrative Cognitive Affective Therapy-Adolescent (ICAT-A) is feasible and beneficial for adolescents. This study evaluated the feasibility of ICAT-A for adolescents with BN or subthreshold BN. METHODS: Eight adolescents with BN or subthreshold BN (mean age = 16.1) were enroled in the study. At baseline and end of treatment, adolescents who participated in ICAT-A completed the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE)

The Revised Self-Monitoring Scale detects early impairment of social cognition in genetic frontotemporal dementia within the GENFI cohort.

BACKGROUND: Although social cognitive dysfunction is a major feature of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), it has been poorly studied in familial forms. A key goal of studies is to detect early cognitive impairment using validated measures in large patient cohorts. METHODS: We used the Revised Self-Monitoring Scale (RSMS) as a measure of socioemotional sensitivity in 730 participants from the genetic FTD initiative (GENFI) observational study: 269 mutation-negative healthy controls, 193 C9orf72 expansion carriers, 193 GRN mutation carriers and 75 MAPT mutation carriers. All participants underwent

Are lifestyle factors significantly associated with self-rated health among Japanese female healthcare students?

BACKGROUND: Self-rated health (SRH), a subjective perception of an individual's overall health, is widely used in public health assessment. The transition from adolescence to young adulthood is a critical period involving substantial changes in lifestyle and dietary habits. Therefore, it is important to understand SRH among young Japanese females. The present study aimed to investigate the relationships between SRH among female healthcare students and their lifestyle factors, such as living status (living with others or living alone), smoking habit, alcohol consumption, frequency of breakfast

The relevance of chronic stress for the acute stress reaction in people at elevated risk for psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical models and empirical evidence suggest that alterations of the acute stress reaction are a vulnerability indicator of psychosis. However, more studies are needed that use laboratory stressors and a multimodal assessment of the stress reaction. Furthermore, it needs to be clarified whether alterations of the acute stress reaction result from the chronic stress level. METHODS: We recruited participants at familial (n = 32) and symptomatic risk (n = 43) for psychosis and a low-risk control group (n = 35). We assessed their chronic stress levels (self-report, hair cortisol

Evaluating the "C" and "B" in brief cognitive behaviour therapy for distressing voices in routine clinical practice in an uncontrolled study.

Brief and single-symptom forms of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for distressing voices may increase access to evidence-based psychological therapy and transcend diagnostic barriers. The current study evaluated the "C" and "B" in CBT for distressing voices in a transdiagnostic voices clinic. The B module (component of therapy) sought to enhance coping with voices, and the C module evaluated the accuracy of negative beliefs about the self and voices. The aims of the study were to investigate (a) whether modules B and/or C led to significant and clinically meaningful improvements on the prima

Health Burden, Support Adequacy, and Depressive Symptoms in Older Men With HIV.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Older adults with HIV face greater health burden than HIV-uninfected counterparts. Little is known about resources that might mediate the influence of physiological health burden on psychological well-being. Informed by the stress process model, we assessed the influence of multifaceted health burden indicators on depressive symptoms and evaluated the mediating effects of social support adequacy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study used structural equation modeling with data from 640 older men who participated in the Research on Older Adults with

Psychological Distress and Revictimization Risk in Youth Victims of Sexual Abuse.

Psychological distress, including depression and anxiety, has been associated with increased risk for sexual revictimization in youth who have experienced child sexual abuse. The present study utilized assessment information from treatment seeking youth with histories of sexual abuse to explore specific risk indicators for revictimization-risk taking, social problems, maladaptive cognitions, and posttraumatic stress-that may be indicated by self-reported distress. The relationship between initial levels of distress and change in symptoms over a 12-week course of treatment was also explored. Pa

Construct distinctiveness and variance composition of multi-dimensional instruments: Three short-form masculinity measures.

Focusing on a set of 3 multidimensional measures of conceptually related but different aspects of masculinity, we use factor analytic techniques to address 2 issues: (a) whether psychological constructs that are theoretically distinct but require fairly subtle discriminations by survey respondents can be accurately captured by self-report measures, and (b) how to better understand sources of variance in subscale and total scores developed from such measures. The specific measures investigated were the: (a) Male Role Norms Inventory-Short Form (MRNI-SF); (b) Conformity to Masculine Norms Invent

Concordance of the mini-Psychiatric Assessment Schedule for Adults who have Developmental Disabilities (PASADD) and the Brief Symptom Inventory.

BACKGROUND: When assessing the mental health needs of people who have intellectual disabilities (ID) it is important to use measures that have good validity and reliability to ensure accurate case recognition and reliable and valid outcome data. Measures developed for this purpose tend to be self-report or by informant report. Multi-trait screening tools developed to identify psychological and psychiatric disorders in people who have ID tend to be informant based. Research examining the concordance of different tools has found this to be high but not for specific diagnoses. Multi-trait self-re

Prenatal smoking cessation intervention and gestational weight gain.

BACKGROUND: Quitting smoking is often associated with weight gain and prenatal cessation may lead to increased gestational weight gain (GWG). Although previous reports have suggested a link between prenatal smoking cessation and GWG, no studies have examined the relationship between cessation and guideline-recommended GWG, and there is little information about the relationship between the timing of prenatal cessation and GWG. Thus, we examine GWG among women in a community prenatal smoking cessation program and assess the relationship between the timing of prenatal cessation GWG. METHODS: Pre

Training community health workers: factors that influence mammography use.

The purpose of this study was to assess factors that influence mammography use among volunteer community health workers (CHWs). Data trends indicate lower mammography rates among minority and low-income women. Although CHW interventions have been shown to promote mammography use among this population, training strategies and the use of a comprehensive needs assessment are lacking. Using a cross-sectional study design, data were collected via a mailed survey. The dependent variable was mammography use within the past 2 years. The independent variables were categorized according to the factors i
