A parallel-group randomized controlled trial of blue light versus red light for improving sleep, fatigue, and cognition following stroke: Pilot results and recommendations for further study.

BACKGROUND: Disordered sleep and fatigue are common in the acute phase of stroke and can impede recovery. OBJECTIVE: A randomized parallel group placebo-controlled pilot study compared daily morning exposure to blue light or red light (placebo) for improving daytime sleepiness, fatigue, nocturnal sleep, and cognition in patients receiving inpatient rehabilitation for acute stroke. METHODS: 43 patients with disordered sleep secondary to first episode stroke (n = 34 ischemic, n = 9 hemorrhagic; aged 66.2 ± 14.1 years) were randomized to receive 25 min of blue or red light for 5 or more days de

Assessment of Sleep Disorders in Patients with CVID.

Inborn errors of immunity have been associated with reduced health-related quality of life and increased fatigue. Sleep disorders, which have been shown to contribute to fatigue and other health concerns, are prevalent in the general population, but there are limited studies evaluating these conditions in patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of fatigue, sleep disturbances, and sleep-disordered breathing in adults with CVID. Patients completed 4 validated, self-administered questionnaires and a 1-night disposable home sleep apnea test. Ou

Effects of childhood trauma on sleep quality and stress-related variables in adulthood: evidence from two multilevel studies.

Childhood trauma has been found to have serious negative consequences for mental and physical health. However, the precise mechanisms through which trauma influences health outcomes are unclear. Childhood trauma-related disruptions to sleep in adulthood represent an important potential mechanism. Two 7-day multilevel studies investigated the effects of childhood trauma on daily sleep outcomes and stress-related variables and whether the effects of trauma on sleep outcomes were mediated through these stress-related variables (or vice versa). Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionn

The Role of Amyloid, Tau, and APOE Genotype on the Relationship Between Informant-Reported Sleep Disturbance and Alzheimer's Disease Risks.

BACKGROUND: The association between sleep and Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers are well-established, but little is known about how they interact to change the course of AD. OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential interaction between sleep disturbance and Aβ, tau, and APOE4 on brain atrophy and cognitive decline. METHODS: Sample included 351 participants (mean age 72.01 ± 6.67, 50.4%female) who were followed for approximately 5 years as part of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. Informant-reported sleep disturbance (IRSD) was measured using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI).

The effects of intravascular photobiomodulation on sleep disturbance caused by Guillain-Barré syndrome after Astrazeneca vaccine inoculation: Case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Sleep disturbance is commonly noted after Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and is often caused by persistent discomfort after disease survival. Intravascular laser irradiation of blood (ILIB) has been shown to be effective in pain modulation owing to the influence of nociceptive signals in the peripheral nervous system. We investigated the application of ILIB on post-Oxford -AstraZeneca vaccination GBS and evaluated its effect on sleep quality. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old woman was subsequently diagnosed with GBS after Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccination. The patient was discharged aft

Rumination in relation to suicide risk, ideation, and attempts: Exacerbation by poor sleep quality?

BACKGROUND: Rumination, particularly brooding rumination, is associated with suicide risk, ideation and attempts; however, findings are inconsistent with respect to reflective rumination. Recent research suggests reflective rumination might be associated with increased suicide risk specifically among vulnerable individuals. Poor sleep quality is related to both suicide risk and rumination, yet no research has examined whether reflective rumination and sleep quality interact in relation to suicidal risk. This study, therefore, examined whether sleep quality moderates the link between ruminative

Sleep disturbance and symptom burden in sarcoidosis.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease associated with myriad symptoms, including fatigue. It can affect physiological processes like sleep, leading to poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness. We hypothesized that sarcoidosis patients would report more severe sleep disturbance than healthy controls and that relationships would be found with sleep disturbance and the severity of other symptoms. METHODS: We enrolled 84 sarcoidosis patients and 30 healthy controls and recorded demographic and clinical characteristics. Self-report measures were used to assess sle

Reallocating time spent in sleep, sedentary behavior and physical activity and its association with pain: a pilot sleep study from the Osteoarthritis Initiative.

OBJECTIVE: Being physically active has broad health benefits for people with osteoarthritis (OA), including pain relief. Increasing physical activity (PA) requires reducing time in other behaviors within a fixed 24-h day. We examined the potential benefits in relation to pain from trading time in one type of wake or sleep behavior for another. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, we used isotemporal logistic regression models to examine the estimated effect on pain from replacing time in one behavior with equal time in another, controlling for sociodemographic and health factors. Stratified

Fibromyalgia and sleep in animal models: a current overview and future directions.

Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). Many of the daytime symptoms, such as chronic pain and fatigue, may be related to the non-restorative sleep patterns associated with the disease. Pain influences the sleep process and sleep disturbances decrease the pain threshold in a reciprocal framework. Thus, understanding the link between sleep and FM has become an important research topic in basic science. Therefore, in the current review we connect these topics and provide some insights into the cyclic relationship between sleep and pain, which has been addressed m

Treatment adherence and quality of sleep in schizophrenia outpatients.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with schizophrenia (SZ) often present sleep complaints, and patients with sleep disturbances are at a greater risk for symptom worsening after antipsychotic discontinuation. Long-term adherence to antipsychotic treatment remains a challenge for clinicians, and the relationship between quality of sleep and treatment adherence in SZ outpatients has been poorly studied. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, non-interventional study, 811 adult outpatients with a diagnosis of SZ were divided into two groups according to the presence (or absence) of sleep disturbances, and assessed

Prevalence, patterns, and persistence of sleep problems in the first 3 years of life.

OBJECTIVE: Examine the prevalence, patterns, and persistence of parent-reported sleep problems during the first 3 years of life. METHODS: Three hundred fifty-nine mother/child pairs participated in a prospective birth cohort study. Sleep questionnaires were administered to mothers when children were 6, 12, 24, and 36 months old. Sleep variables included parent response to a nonspecific query about the presence/absence of a sleep problem and 8 specific sleep outcome domains: sleep onset latency, sleep maintenance, 24-hour sleep duration, daytime sleep/naps, sleep location, restlessness/vocaliz

[Links between diabetes mellitus and sleep disorders: focusing on obstructive sleep apnea].

During the past decades obesity and diabetes have become increasingly common in modern, industrialized societies. At the same time sleep disorders, chronic sleep loss and sleep deprivation have also become more and more prevalent. There may be a positive feed back circle between the two disorders: sleep problems may affect endocrine function and metabolic conditions, while metabolic abnormalities potentially interfere with sleep regulation. Sleep-disordered breathing, obstructive sleep apnea in particular, has the strongest association with glucose metabolism. Prevalence and severity of obstru

Rumination predicts longer sleep onset latency after an acute psychosocial stressor.

OBJECTIVES: Rumination has been linked to self-reported sleep quality. However, whether rumination is related to an objective sleep parameter has not been tested. This study examined whether rumination predicts sleep onset latency (SOL) on the night after an acute psychosocial stressor. We hypothesized that those who ruminate (assessed with both trait and stressor-specific measures) would have longer SOL (assessed with objective and subjective methods). METHODS: Seventy participants delivered a 5-minute speech in front of an evaluative panel during an afternoon laboratory session. Trait rumin
