Anthropometric measurements in rural school children.

Anthropometric measurements of 1012 rural school-going children, selected randomly, were performed. There were 776 males and 236 females in the age group of 5-15 years. The values of weight and height were recorded for every child in the study sample. Age and sex break-up was studied and compared with the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) standard. The comparison made separately for boys and girls showed that the values for both sexes and in all age groups were less than the ICMR standard. The majority (83.6%) of the children belonged to the middle and low social class according to the

Public Insurance and Single-Guardian Households Are Associated with Diagnostic Delay in Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis.

BACKGROUND: Extensive literature documents the adverse sequelae of delayed diagnosis of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), including worsening deformity and surgical complications. Less is known about predictors of delayed diagnosis of SCFE, particularly the effects of social determinants of health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of insurance type, family structure, and neighborhood-level socioeconomic vulnerability on the delay of SCFE diagnosis. METHODS: We reviewed medical records of patients who underwent surgical fixation for stable SCFE at a tertiary pediatr

A Bayesian shared components modeling approach to develop small area indicators of social determinants of health with measures of uncertainty.

OBJECTIVES: Existing Canadian social determinants of health (SDOH) indicators do not quantify uncertainty to identify priority areas. The objectives of this methodologic study were: (1) to estimate and map small area (dissemination area) shared and variable-specific SDOH indicators with measures of uncertainty using a Bayesian model that accounts for spatial dependence; (2) to quantify geographic variation in the SDOH indicators and their contribution to a shared indicator; and (3) to assess the SDOH indicators' associations with behavioural risk factors and their consistency with the Ontario

Social and Structural Determinants of Cervical Health among Women Engaged in HIV Care.

Cervical cancer prevention/control efforts among women living with HIV/AIDS (WLH) are socially and structurally challenging. Healthcare access and perceived HIV stigma and discrimination are factors that may challenge risk reduction efforts. This study examined socio-structural determinants of cervical cancer screening among women engaged in HIV care. One hundred forty-five WLH seeking health/social services from AIDS Service Organizations in the southeastern US completed a questionnaire assessing factors related to cervical cancer prevention/control. Ninety percent were African American, mean

Health, Wealth, Social Integration, and Sexuality of Extremely Low-Birth-Weight Prematurely Born Adults in the Fourth Decade of Life.

IMPORTANCE: Although it has been previously reported that the transition of extremely low-birth-weight survivors (≤1000 g) in their mid-20s was similar to that of normal-birth-weight controls (>2500g), there was uncertainty as to whether this positive pattern would persist. OBJECTIVE: To compare the social functioning of low-birth-weight prematurely born adults aged 29 to 36 years with that of normal-birth-weight term controls. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A population-based longitudinal cohort study was conducted in Ontario, Canada, between March 14, 2011, and August 13, 2013, among 1

Useful indicators to interpret the cancer burden in Italy.

INTRODUCTION: In the last decades the demographics of most Western countries have undergone a deep transformation, which has caused a steady increase in degenerative chronic diseases and has made maintaining health and social support by the welfare system difficult. This paper aims to present a set of indicators pertaining to the health status of the Italian population and to the national economic and social systems, as an aid to a better interpretation of the cancer burden impact and of its future tendencies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All indicators were derived from the ISTAT Health for All dat

[Psychosocial functioning of adults with late diagnosed autism spectrum disorders--a retrospective study].

BACKGROUND: The first time diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) after passing childhood and adolescence is still considered a rare event. However, in recent years an increasing demand for diagnostic clarifications with suspected ASD in adulthood challenges this view. There is insufficient knowledge about the neuropsychological characterisation and psychosocial outcome of this adult subgroup in the autistic spectrum. AIM: To determine the psychosocial functioning (living status, partnerships, level of education, psychiatric history) of adult patients with late diagnosed ASD. METHODS: I

Evidence base for children affected by HIV and AIDS in low prevalence and concentrated epidemic countries: applicability to programming guidance from high prevalence countries.

As global commitment grows to protect and support children affected by HIV and AIDS, questions remain about how best to meet the needs of these children in low prevalence settings and whether information from high prevalence countries can appropriately guide programming in these settings. A 2007 search for the evidence in low prevalence settings on situational challenges of HIV and AIDS-affected children and interventions to address these challenges identified 413 documents. They were reviewed and judged for quality of documentation and scientific rigor. Information was compiled across eight t

Biological measures of the standard of living.

When economists investigate long-term trends and socioeconomic differences in the standard of living or quality of life, they have traditionally focused on monetary measures such as gross domestic product--which has occupied center stage for over 50 years. In recent decades, however, scholars have increasingly recognized the limitations of monetary measures while seeking useful alternatives. This essay examines the unique and valuable contributions of four biological measures--life expectancy, morbidity, stature, and certain features of skeletal remains--to understand levels and changes in hum

Is oppositional defiant disorder a meaningful diagnosis in adults? Results from a large sample of adults with ADHD.

We examined the prevalence and clinical characteristics of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in a sample of clinically referred adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Subjects were consecutively referred adults with a DSM-III R/IV diagnosis of ADHD with or without ODD. Nearly half of subjects (43%) had a history of ODD. Subjects with a childhood history of ODD had increased risk for bipolar disorder, multiple anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders relative to the ADHD subjects without ODD. We concluded, as in children with ODD, adults with a childhood history of

Effects of a modified group intervention with early-stage breast cancer patients.

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effectiveness of a psychiatric intervention program consisting of 5 weekly structured interventions and 3 additional group meetings every two months. Previous studies revealed that a 5 weekly structured intervention program was effective for alleviating psychological discomforts in Japanese breast cancer patients, and that the effectiveness persisted for 6 months for patients without lymph node metastasis or adjustment disorders. Since this 5-session intervention did not have persistent effects in patients with lymph node metastasis and/or
