Heterozygous PAX6 mutation, adult brain structure and fronto-striato-thalamic function in a human family.

Recent progress in developmental neurobiology and neuroimaging can be drawn together to provide new insight into the links between genetically specified processes of embryonic brain development and adult human brain structure and function. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to show that individuals with aniridia and deficits in executive and social cognition, due to heterozygous mutation of the neurodevelopmental control gene PAX6, have structural abnormalities of grey matter in anterior cingulate cortex, cerebellum and medial temporal lobe, as well as white matter deficits in corpus cal

Coming home to Hume: a sociobiological foundation for a concept of 'health' and morality.

Assessing the normative status of concepts of health and disease involves one in questions regarding the relationship between fact and value. Some have argued that Christopher Boorse's conception of health and disease lacks such a valuational element because it cannot account for types of harms which, while disvalued, do not have evolutionarily dysfunctional consequences. I take Boorse's account and incorporate some Humean-like sociobiological assumptions in order to respond to this challenge. The possession of moral sentiments, I argue, offers an evolutionary advantage (thus falling within Bo

Neurodevelopmental effects of X monosomy: a volumetric imaging study.

Thirty girls with Turner syndrome (TuS) were compared with 30 individually age-matched controls on volumetric brain measures derived from magnetic resonance imaging and on measures of psychological functioning. As expected, girls with TuS performed more poorly on visual-spatial and intellectual measures relative to controls, and were rated by their parents as having more significant problems in attention and social behaviors. Although no group differences in overall cerebral or subcortical volumes were observed, the regional distribution of gray and white matter differed across groups in both

Latency--a reappraisal.

This paper discusses the specific metapsychology and developmental tasks of the latency period. It offers a Kleinian view of the phase and compares it with other current psychoanalytic theories. The emphasis is on the importance of ego and superego growth and integration during latency resulting in better contact with both external and internal reality. Character formation, social integration and learning are discussed as the specific developmental tasks of the period. Freud's original formulation that the latency period is a consequence of the resolution of the Oedipus complex is evaluated in

Alcohol and bone.

Abuse of alcohol is considered to be an important risk factor for fractures and osteoporosis. Alcohol abuse is associated with deleterious changes in bone structure detected by histomorphometry, and with a decrease in bone mineral density. These changes may also be produced by factors commonly associated with alcohol abuse, e.g., nutritional deficiencies, liver damage, and hypogonadism. Thus the etiology of alcohol-associated bone disease is multifactorial. Alcohol has, however, clear-cut direct effects on bone and mineral metabolism. Acute alcohol intoxication causes transitory hypoparathyroi

A review of the Rett syndrome with a theory of autism.

In a review of results of clinical observations, girls from 2:03 (yrs:mos) at stages III and IV of the Rett syndrome (RS) and autistic children from 4:01 with or without severe mental retardation were compared as to their behavioral traits. Signs of concordance between the extremely low mental, affective and motor developmental levels, such as in the expression of the eyes, are a prominent feature of RS, whereas signs of higher cortical functions that are in contrast with insufficient relations to objects, people and space are a prominent characteristic in autism. It is argued that insistence

Prevalence and incidence of chronic bronchitis and farmer's lung with respect to socioeconomic factors.

This study was based on data provided by 9,483 farmers from a larger sample of 12,056 Finnish farmers. The data were gathered in two postal surveys (with a 3-year interval between surveys) conducted by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. When age, sex, atopy, and smoking habits were controlled, neither the family structure nor the level of vocational education significantly affected the occurrence of either chronic bronchitis or farmer's lung. The prevalence of farmer's lung was smallest on farms with the largest area under cultivation; the difference in prevalence between the area ca

Drug abuse in a farm community; a brief appraisal of a research work.

This project was initiated in the rural areas of the Punjab to assess the prevailing trends in the abuse of intoxicating drugs by rural folk, with a view to contributing to future primary mental health care planning as an integral part of comprehensive health care planning. Twenty-four villages were selected from six community development blocks in the three bordering districts of the Punjab. In the rural population, the abuse of intoxicating drugs is mainly confined to alcohol, tobacco, opium and cannabis. Among psychosocial correlates, religion was of obvious predominance. Since Sikh are non

Combining graphlets and random walks for capturing complex network topology.

Random-walk-based methods are widely used for network embedding and downstream learning tasks, yet it remains unclear which aspects of network topology they capture and which they ignore. This is a critical limitation in networks where node function depends not only on direct connectivity, but also on higher-order structural patterns. To address this gap, we introduce orbit adjacency, a graphlet-based descriptor that measures how often pairs of nodes co-occur in specific symmetric positions within small induced subgraphs. Using orbit adjacency, we provide a theoretical analysis showing that ra

Barriers and facilitators to recruitment, engagement, and retention of underrepresented populations in dementia prevention research: a scoping review.

Underrepresented populations in dementia prevention research, including minoritized racial/ethnic groups, individuals with lower socioeconomic status, and others facing social and structural disadvantages, are disproportionately affected by dementia risk. This scoping review examined barriers and facilitators to recruitment, engagement, and retention of these populations in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) prevention studies, synthesizing evidence from both empirical studies and review articles. Guided by PRISMA-ScR and the conceptual structure described by Gilmore-Bykovskyi et

Violence, Stigma, and Moral Injury in Nursing During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Analysis From 18 Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Workplace violence against nurses and midwives intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, exposing and amplifying longstanding structural marginalization in health systems across Latin America. This study analyzes how different forms of violence were experienced and described by nursing professionals during this period. A secondary qualitative analysis was conducted using text-based responses from an international online survey developed by the Global Consortium, which included 3860 nurses and midwives from 18 Latin American and Caribbean countries. Data were examined through Descending Hierarc

Emotional Intelligence and Communication Skills in Healthcare University Students: The Mediating Role of Interpersonal Skills.

Although high-quality healthcare requires both technical expertise and soft skills, the precise connections between emotional intelligence (EI), interpersonal skills (IS), and communication skills (CS) remain insufficiently explored. This lack of research creates an educational gap in training students to effectively manage clinical anxiety. This study aims to analyze the predictive and mediational role of IS between EI and CS in healthcare undergraduates. A quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted with 816 Spanish undergraduate healthcare students recruited between October and Decemb

Scale matters: Patterns of inequity in measures of structural racism can reverse direction when using the relative vs. the absolute scale.

Quantifying the effect of structural racism on health is a subject of sustained interest. To measure structural racism, analysts often calculate contrasts between marginalized and privileged groups on measures of social determinants in health. These contrasts are predominantly calculated on the relative scale, rather than the absolute scale. In this paper, we investigated the rank ordering of 38 US states in terms of the relative and absolute difference in education and incarceration between Black and White individuals using 2015-2019 data from the American Community Survey and the National Pr

Trust, Participation, and Power: Community Perspectives from the Equity in Public Health Initiative.

Health disparities arise from unequal power relations shaping resource allocation, governance, and community agency. Community power is a key mechanism for addressing disparities. This study examines how visible, hidden, and invisible power operate within a U.S. county to inform inclusive governance. We conducted seven focus groups with Black and Hispanic residents (n = 68) and sixteen semi-structured interviews with elected officials, government staff, and advocacy leaders in Greenville County, South Carolina. Data were collected between March and December 2024. Transcripts were collaborative

Combinatorial Instrumental Sound-Making in a Captive Chimpanzee: Evolution of Vocal Externalization.

Instrumental music may have evolved from earlier vocal expressions, gradually expanding into rhythmic sound production using tools. We report a novel case in which a captive male chimpanzee spontaneously produced a structured instrumental display using a self-fabricated tool. The display consisted of combinatorial sequences of rhythmic actions resembling the structure of pant-hoot vocalizations. Transition analyses revealed significant nonrandom transitions from tool-assisted drumming to object dragging, and from dragging to object throwing, and rhythm analyses showed that the drumming pattern

Burnout subtypes in the German working population: Differentiation by symptomatology, work-related factors and structural impairment according to the OPD.

Farber's typological approach expands burnout models by identifying three burnout subtypes: frenetic, underchallenged, and worn-out. Despite its potential, research on this approach is limited, especially in the German working population. This study translated and validated the Burnout Questionnaire for Clinical Subtypes (BCSQ-12) into German and examined these burnout subtypes in the German working population. Using a non-probabilistic online quota sampling method, 616 employees were surveyed. The BCSQ-12 was translated and evaluated for its psychometric properties (EFA, Varimax rotation). Bu

[Framework conditions for informed decision-making and interdisciplinary collaboration in abortion care-perspectives of counselling professionals].

BACKGROUND: Informed and self-determined decisions are a central element of human-rights-compliant abortion care. This article examines the framework conditions for informed, self-determined decisions and interdisciplinary cooperation from the perspectives of counsellors from pregnancy counselling centres in Germany. The data are based on a qualitative study conducted as part of a sub-project on psychosocial care within the joint project "Experiences and life situations of women with unwanted pregnancies-counselling and care services". METHODS: In the fourth quarter of 2022, six guided focus

Elevating LGBTQ+ Health: Principles and Practices for Affirmative Health Coaching.

LGBTQ+ populations experience persistent mental and physical health disparities driven by minority stress and structural inequities that increase their risk for chronic disease. Health coaching is well positioned to support behavior change in these populations; however, when not delivered in an affirming manner, coaching practices may replicate bias, undermine engagement, and limit effectiveness. We provide a framework for LGBTQ+ affirmative health coaching that integrates minority stress theory, self-determination theory, and health equity models to identify mechanisms through which structura
