BACKGROUND: The D-isoforms of amino acids (D-AAs) exhibit anti-biofilm potential against a diverse range of bacterial species in vitro, while its role in vivo remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a combination of D-AAs and vancomycin on a PJI rat model.
METHODS: Eight-week-old male SD rats were randomized to the control group, sham group, vancomycin group, D-AAs-vancomycin group. After treatment for 6 weeks, we analysed the levels of inflammatory factors in serum, behavioural change, imaging manifestations. The anti-biofilm ability of D-AAs was detected by

BACKGROUND: Infectious keratitis, a medical emergency with acute and rapid disease progression may lead to severe visual impairment and even blindness. Herein, an antimicrobial polypeptide from Crassostrea hongkongensis, named URP20, was evaluated for its therapeutic efficacy against keratitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) infection in rats, respectively.
METHODS: A needle was used to scratch the surface of the eyeballs of rats and infect them with S. aureus and E.coli to construct a keratitis model. The two models were treated by giving 100 μL 100

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) sequence type 398 (ST398) has aroused great concern for its spread throughout the world. ST398 community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) has been given greater emphasis because of its high virulence and high probability of treatment failure. Herein, A 22-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with a history of fever, chest pain and dyspnea for 2 days. A chest CT scan showed infiltrative and nodular shadows. The sequence type of the isolates from blood culture was ST398, the virulence genes detected was PVL gene (lukS-PV and lukF-PV). Despite resuscitation efforts,

The release of untreated wastes from abattoirs into the environment and nearby water bodies poses a significant threat to public health. Such litters may contain pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This study investigated 80 samples collected from butchering tables, slaughter slabs, meat rinsing points, and abattoir wastes receiving water from two abattoirs (A and B). Total Enterobacteriaceae count (TEC) for each sample was determined, and Escherichia coli (E. coli), Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were isolated and identified. Antimicrobia

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this study was to present recent microbiological, experimental, clinical and tolerance data for cotrimoxazole and clindamycin in the specific field of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs).
RECENT FINDINGS: Staphylococcus aureus and streptococci remain the leading cause of SSTIs. Cotrimoxazole is a good anti-Gram-positive agent with preserved activity against methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and streptococci. Although clindamycin has good methicillin-susceptible S. aureus activity, a growing number of resistant MRSA and strepto

Buruli ulcer is a neglected tropical disease caused by the environmental pathogen, Mycobacterium ulcerans whose major virulence factor is mycolactone, a lipid cytotoxic molecule. Buruli ulcer has high morbidity, particularly in rural West Africa where the disease is endemic. Data have shown that infected lesions of Buruli ulcer patients can be colonized by quorum sensing bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but without typical pathology associated with those pathogens' colonization. M. ulcerans pathogenesis may not only be an individual act but ma

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic joint infections (PJI) are one of the most serious complication of arthroplasty. The management of PJI needs a multidisciplinary collaboration between orthopaedic surgeon, infectious disease specialist and microbiologist. In France, the management of PJI is organized around reference centres (CRIOACs). Our main objective was to perform an audit through a questionnaire survey based on clinical cases, to evaluate how French physicians manage PJI. Eligible participants were all physicians involved in care of patients presenting a PJI. Physicians could answer individually, o

Delafloxacin is an option for infections due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. In 2017, 22% of isolates from 7 hospitals in Brooklyn, New York, were nonsusceptible to delafloxacin. Isolates belonging to ST105, a strain associated with healthcare-related infections, predominated. Resistance was also found in ST8, a strain (USA300) associated with community-associated infections.

Mucosal barriers are densely colonized by pathobiont microbes such as Candida albicans, capable of invasive disseminated infection. However, systemic infections occur infrequently in healthy individuals, suggesting that pathobiont commensalism may elicit host benefits. We show that intestinal colonization with C. albicans drives systemic expansion of fungal-specific Th17 CD4+ T cells and IL-17 responsiveness by circulating neutrophils, which synergistically protect against C. albicans invasive infection. Protection conferred by commensal C. albicans requires persistent fungal colonization and

BACKGROUND: Cutibacterium acnes has been identified as one of the main triggers of acne. However, increasing knowledge of the human skin microbiome raises questions about the role of other skin commensals, such as Staphylococcus epidermidis, in the physiopathology of this skin disease.
SUMMARY: This review provides an overview of current knowledge of the potential role of S. epidermidis in the physiopathology of acne. Recent research indicates that acne might be the result of an unbalanced equilibrium between C. acnes and S. epidermidis, according to dedicated interactions. Current treatments
