Child maltreatment: risk of adjustment problems and dating violence in adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between child maltreatment, clinically relevant adjustment problems, and dating violence in a community sample of adolescents. METHOD: Adolescents from 10 high schools (N= 1,419; response rate = 62%) in southwestern Ontario completed questionnaires that assessed past maltreatment, current adjustment, and dating violence. Logistic regression was used to compare maltreated and nonmaltreated youths across outcome domains. RESULTS: One third (n = 462) of the school sample reported levels of maltreatment above the cutoff score on the Childhood Trauma Questio

Interactive psychoeducational group therapy in the treatment of authority problems in combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

The use of Interactive Psychoeducational Group Therapy to ameliorate authority problems of veterans with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder is described. Despite the common occurrence of authority problems in this population, and the degree of damage they have caused in family, work, and legal domains, they are rarely specifically targeted by treatment interventions. A conceptual framework linking psychological trauma with distortions in authority relations is presented, followed by the format, procedures, and case examples of this form of group therapy. By uncovering the distorted b

Psychiatric complications during flooding therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder.

The authors use six case vignettes to illustrate underrecognized complications occurring during flooding therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including exacerbation of depression, relapse of alcoholism, and precipitation of panic disorder. A common denominator to the majority of these cases appears to be the mobilization of negative posttrauma appraisal, accompanied by shame, guilt, and anger. The authors suggest that flooding may not be helpful for these negative emotions in the manner that it is for anxiety. Suggestions for preventing and treating complications of flooding thera

Survivors of imprisonment in the Pacific theater during World War II.

Data were obtained from 41 survivors of imprisonment by the Japanese during World War II. Interview data suggested that these individuals, despite the 40 years that had passed since their prisoner of war experiences, showed manifestations of posttraumatic stress disorder, notably a sleep disturbance marked by recurrent nightmares. MMPI data suggested significant pathology, characterized as an anxiety state, in this group. Half of the subjects met the full set of DSM-III criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder.

Nightmares and trauma: a comparison of nightmares after combat with lifelong nightmares in veterans.

In this study the chronic traumatic nightmares of men who had been in combat were found to differ from the lifelong nightmares of veterans with no combat experience in that they tended to occur earlier in the sleep cycle, were more likely to be replicas of actual events, and were more commonly accompanied by gross body movements. Traumatic nightmares may arise out of varying stages of sleep and are not confined to REM sleep alone. The group with lifelong nightmares showed evidence of thought disorder on the Rorschach. The men with posttraumatic stress disorder had failed to psychologically int

Neurodevelopmental biology associated with childhood sexual abuse.

Child maltreatment appears to be the single most preventable cause of mental illness and behavioral dysfunction in the United States. Few published studies examine the developmental and the psychobiological consequences of sexual abuse. There are multiple mechanisms through which sexual abuse can cause post-traumatic stress disorder, activate biological stress response systems, and contribute to adverse brain development. This article will critically review the psychiatric problems associated with maltreatment and the emerging biologic stress system research with a special emphasis on what is

A civilian social worker's guide to the treatment of war-induced PTSD.

Post-traumatic stress disorder has been designated as one of the signature wounds of the Iraq/Afghanistan war. Approximately 15% of returning service members have been diagnosed with PTSD and the numbers increase daily. As such, civilian social workers and other mental health professionals need to understand the diagnosis and how best to help those struggling with the disorder. This article will explore the etiology and treatment approaches used in management for those with PTSD.

Psychopathology of sexual abuse in young people with intellectual disability.

The present study addressed two issues using a sample of child and adolescent victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse: (1) the extent of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the sample; and (2) the possible distinction between perpetrators whose motivations were sexually impulsive, and those who were controlling and abuse-reactive. Retrospective case material from 43 cases (21 victims only, and 22 perpetrators, of whom 16 were also victims) provided the data. Post-traumatic symptomatology was not common. Only one case of PTSD was found. Perpetrators could be distinguished by whether they

Can You Properly Manage Delusional Parasitosis?

Delusional parasitosis is a psychiatric disorder in which one experiences persistent, false delusions of being infected by parasites or other organisms. Symptoms include formication, pruritis, and self-inflicted cutaneous manifestations. In this article, we discuss the complicated case of a 45-year-old male patient with history of Crohn's disease, opioid use disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder to highlight key concepts of the disease. The clinical presentation often leads to a broad differential diagnosis, which can complicate and delay treatment.

Engagement in and Benefits of a Short-Term, Brief Psychotherapy Intervention for PTSD During Pregnancy.

Trauma-related symptoms and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common during pregnancy and have adverse effects on pregnancy and birth outcomes, post-partum maternal mental health, and child development. The arousal symptoms associated with PTSD, including heightened or dysregulated physiology, may contribute to these adverse outcomes. Low-income minoritized women may be at highest risk given more lifetime exposure to trauma and limited access to mental health care. While evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD exist, none are targeted to non-treatment seeking individuals nor specifical

Adolescent M-CSF Administration Provides Durable Protection Against Trauma-Induced PTSD-Like Phenotypes in Male Mice Through Microglia-Dependent Mechanisms.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe psychiatric condition for which effective preventive strategies are lacking. Innate immune preconditioning has shown promise for the prevention of PTSD, yet the transient nature of such protection when induced in adulthood poses a substantial limitation. Using male C57BL/6J mice, we tested whether administration of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF, 100 µg/kg, intraperitoneally) during adolescence, a developmental period characterized by heightened microglial plasticity, could establish enduring resilience against trauma-induced PTSD-

Postwar posttraumatic stress disorder: Prevalence and associated factors among adolescents and youths in Tigray, Ethiopia.

Posttraumatic stress disorder is the most common mental health disorder worldwide, affecting people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. Poor social support, being female, and presence of previous mental illness were associated with Posttraumatic stress disorder in previous studies. Despite studies conducted, the condition is not well known in the war torn Tigray, Ethiopia; therefore, this study assessed the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder and associated factors among school adolescents and youths in Tigray. School based cross sectional study was conducted from Nove

Preliminary effects and feasibility of a school-based regular aerobic exercise intervention on PTSD-related symptoms among college students: a single-group pre-post study.

BACKGROUND: College students are considered a high-risk group for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Existing non-pharmacological interventions, although effective and accessible, still have notable limitations. Regular aerobic exercise, as a potential mental health promotion strategy, requires empirical validation in real campus environments to determine its specific effects on reducing anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms, as well as its role in enhancing psychological resilience. METHOD: This study employed a single-group pre-test/post-test design and was conducted in August 2025 at

Post-displacement mental health among Syrian refugees: A systematic review and meta-analysis comparing Middle Eastern and European host contexts across time.

This systematic review and meta-analysis examines PTSD, depression, and anxiety among adult Syrian refugees living in neighboring Middle Eastern countries and European contexts, comparing prevalence across regions and different phases of displacement. Evidence was synthesized from 23 quantitative studies conducted between 2014 and 2025. A random-effects meta-analysis using generalized linear mixed-effects models (GLMM) yielded a pooled PTSD prevalence of 32.4% based on 19 studies. Temporal subgroup analyses showed no significant difference between early (2014-2017: 32.2%) and later periods (20
