Mental Health Recovery: The Effectiveness of Peer Services in the Community.

Peer recovery services are a community-based treatment option for people suffering from mental illness and/or substance use problems. Peer services provide an alternative to inpatient care and can help decrease costs associated with hospitalization or incarceration of the mentally ill. Yet, scant research has explored the effect of these services, particularly in rural communities. The current study assesses the impact of peer services on peer mentees' and mentors' recovery capital, quality of life, and general wellness. Consumers of peer services completed three surveys every three months for

Zolpidem stimulant effect: Induced mania case report and systematic review of cases.

INTRODUCTION: Zolpidem is the most widely prescribed hypnotic agent worldwide. This easy-access drug seems to have a high addictive potential among specific populations and is now listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as being as dangerous as benzodiazepines for dependence and abuse. Many side effects have been reported, but drug-induced mania is still extremely rare. We conducted a systematic review to study the zolpidem-induced stimulation, euphoric or manic effects. METHODS: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Science Direct, and Google Scholar were searched for articles in English, French, German,

The effects of licit and illicit recreational drugs on prospective memory: a meta-analytic review.

RATIONALE: There are no recent reports summarising the magnitude of prospective memory (PM) impairments in recreational drug users. OBJECTIVE: We performed a meta-analysis of studies (with a parallel group design) examining PM performance in users of common recreational drugs (including alcohol and tobacco) who were not intoxicated during testing. Studies were also evaluated for the presence of methodological bias. METHODS: Twenty-seven studies were included in the meta-analysis following literature searches of MEDLINE, EMBASE and PsycINFO. Effect sizes (standardised mean difference; SMD) we

Does experiential avoidance explain the relationships between shame, PTSD symptoms, and compulsive sexual behaviour among women in substance use treatment?

OBJECTIVE: Untreated compulsive sexual behaviour (CSB) poses a risk to efficacious substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. Yet the ways in which CSB manifests in women with SUDs remains poorly understood. Shame and trauma exposure are well-documented correlates for women's CSB. Prior theory suggested women with shame and trauma-related symptoms may engage in CSB in an effort to escape aversive internal experiences. Thus, the present study examined experiential avoidance as a mediator of the relationship between defectiveness/shame beliefs, post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, and CSB in a

Illicit Drug Use, Cigarette Smoking, and Eating Disorder Symptoms: Associations in an Adolescent Twin Sample.

OBJECTIVE: Twin studies have shown that genetic factors in part explain the established relation between alcohol use (i.e., problematic use or abuse/dependence) and eating disorder symptoms in adolescent and adult females. However, studies have yet to elucidate if there are similar shared genetic factors between other aspects of substance involvement, such as illicit drug use and repeated cigarette smoking. METHOD: For those sex-specific phenotypic correlations above our threshold of .20, we used a behavioral genetic design to examine potential shared genetic overlap between self-reported lif

Specific phobias.

Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental disorders, but the subcategory of specific phobias has not been well studied. Phobias involve both fear and avoidance. For people who have specific phobias, avoidance can reduce the constancy and severity of distress and impairment. However, these phobias are important because of their early onset and strong persistence over time. Studies indicate that the lifetime prevalence of specific phobias around the world ranges from 3% to 15%, with fears and phobias concerning heights and animals being the most common. The developmental course of ph

Coping via substance use, internal attribution bias, and their depressive interplay: Findings from a three-week daily diary study using a clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between depression and coping-oriented substance use is extensively documented; however, the cognitive processes moderating this bidirectional relationship are not well-understood. The present study investigated whether internal attribution bias coupled with a tendency to use drugs and/or alcohol to cope predicts increases in depression and daily-levels of general negative affectivity, sadness, and hostility. METHOD: Sixty-seven adults diagnosed with depression were recruited from out-patient treatment settings (66% female, 81% White, Mage = 31, SDage = 13.2). Par

Characterizing Anxiety Among Individuals Receiving Treatment for Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Despite high prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) substance use disorder (SUD) comorbidity, little is known regarding demographic characteristics associated with GAD in SUD treatment seekers. OBJECTIVE: To characterize demographic differences between inpatient SUD treatment seekers reporting varying levels of GAD symptomatology. DESIGN: General linear models, chi-square test, t test, and correlational analyses were utilized to assess group differences. Groups included those with no history of significant anxiety (No GAD; n = 256), subclinical anxiety (Subclinical; n =

Substance use in adolescents with mental illness in Durban, South Africa.

Comorbid substance use in adolescents with mental illness is often an indicator of poor treatment outcome. This study aims to determine the prevalence of, and associated risk factors for, substance use in adolescents with mental illness attending a mental health service. Data was collected from hospital records of 162 adolescents, using a structured data sheet, over a two-year period. Substance use was more significant in older adolescents and those with severe mental illness. Sixty-two (38.3%) adolescents used substances. Thirty-seven (38.1%) male adolescents reported substance use compared t

Urine Toxicology in Adults Evaluated for a Central Hypersomnia and How the Results Modify the Physician's Diagnosis.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Drugs and psychoactive substances can cause sleepiness and when undetected, may lead to over diagnosis of central hypersomnias. We performed urine drug testing using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in adults undergoing multiple sleep latency testing (MSLT) for a suspected central hypersomnia. We examined how the drug test results modified the treating physician's diagnosis. METHODS: One hundred eighty-six consecutive patients with a suspected central hypersomnia who underwent clinical assessment, MSLT and urine drug testing by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were r

Substance use disorders, psychiatric disorders, and mortality after release from prison: a nationwide longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: High mortality rates have been reported in people released from prison compared with the general population. However, few studies have investigated potential risk factors associated with these high rates, especially psychiatric determinants. We aimed to investigate the association between psychiatric disorders and mortality in people released from prison in Sweden. METHODS: We studied all people who were imprisoned since Jan 1, 2000, and released before Dec 31, 2009, in Sweden for risks of all-cause and external-cause (accidents, suicide, homicide) mortality after prison release.

Iatrogenic dependence of anabolic-androgenic steroid in an Indian non-athletic woman.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are increasingly being used by athletes and youngsters to become masculine and to loose body fat. Long-term consumption of AAS causes multiple physical and psychological morbidities. Research has also concluded that AAS have addictive potential and AAS abuse is commonly found with other substance abuse. Abuse of AAS is rare in eastern countries. Abuse among women is even rarer. Here is a case report of an Indian woman, who was prescribed nandrolone decanoate injections by an unqualified medical practitioner to treat multiple non-specific somatic pains and rep

Borderline personality disorder and comorbid addiction: epidemiology and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) affects 2.7% of adults. About 78% of adults with BPD also develop a substance-related disorder or addiction at some time in their lives. These persons are more impulsive and clinically less stable than BPD patients without substance dependency. They display suicidal behavior to a greater extent, drop out of treatment more often, and have shorter abstinence phases. The combination of borderline personality disorder with addiction requires a special therapeutic approach. METHOD: This review is based on a selective literature search about the tre

Is it prime time for alpha2-adrenocepter agonists in the treatment of withdrawal syndromes?

The need to treat withdrawal syndromes is a common occurrence in outpatient, inpatient ward, and intensive care unit (ICU) settings. A PubMed and Google Scholar search using alpha2-adrenoreceptor agonist (A2AA), specific A2AA agents, withdrawal syndrome and nicotine, and alcohol and opioid withdrawal terms was performed. A2AA agents appear to be able to modulate many of the signs and symptoms of significant withdrawal syndromes but are also capable of significant side effects, which can limit clinical use. Non-opioid oral A2AA agent use for opioid withdrawal has been well established. Pharmaco

Mood as a mediator of the link between child sexual abuse and psychosis.

The significance of affective changes in psychosis is increasingly acknowledged, as is the role of early traumatic events. In a previous paper, using data from the English Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007 (APMS2007), strong associations between child sexual abuse (CSA) and psychosis were demonstrated, with some evidence of mediation by affect. In the current paper, we subjected the same dataset to formal tests of mediation. For CSA involving sexual intercourse, 38.5% of the link was mediated, 30.0% by depression and 8.5% by anxiety. For all forms of contact abuse, 38.2% was mediated, 29
