Amniotic membrane in ophthalmology: Historical perspectives, biological properties, and clinical applications.

The use of amniotic membrane (AM) in ophthalmology has evolved significantly since its first documented application in ocular surface reconstruction in the 1940s. Widespread clinical interest surged in the late 20th century following the development of improved processing and preservation methods. This comprehensive review covers the history, properties, and clinical applications of AM in ophthalmology. Derived from the innermost layer of the placenta, AM is composed of epithelium, a thick basement membrane and avascular stromal matrix, providing a biologic scaffold that supports epithelial ce

Properties and Emissions of Three-Layer Particleboards Manufactured with Mixtures of Wood Chips and Partially Liquefied Bark.

Partial liquefaction of residual biomass shows good potential for developing new materials suitable for making bio-based composites. Three-layer particleboards were produced by replacing virgin wood particles with partially liquefied bark (PLB) in the core or surface layers. PLB was prepared by the acid-catalyzed liquefaction of industrial bark residues in polyhydric alcohol. The chemical and microscopic structure of bark and residues after liquefaction were evaluated by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), while the particleboards wer

Polyalanine peptide variations may have different mechanisms of action against multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens.

OBJECTIVES: The number of bacterial pathogens resistant to the currently available antibiotics has dramatically increased, with antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) being among the most promising potential new drugs. In this study, the applicability and mechanisms of action of Pa-MAP 2 and Pa-MAP 1.9, two AMPs synthetically designed based on a natural AMP template, were evaluated. METHODS: Pa-MAP 2 and Pa-MAP 1.9 were tested against a clinically isolated multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strain. Biophysical approaches were used to evaluate the preference of both peptides for specific lipid

RGD Peptide-Functionalized Polyether Ether Ketone Surface Improves Biocompatibility and Cell Response.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a biocompatible polymer used in maxillofacial and orthopedic applications because of its mechanical properties and chemical stability. However, this biomaterial is inert and requires surface modification to make it bioactive, enhancing implant-tissue integration and giving the material the ability to interact with the surrounding microenvironment. In this paper, surface of PEEK was activated by oxygen plasma treatment and this resulted in increasing reactivity and surface hydrophilicity. Then, a polydopamine (PDA) coating was deposited over the surface followed

CO2 adhesion on hydrated mineral surfaces.

Hydrated mineral surfaces in the environment are generally hydrophilic but in certain cases can strongly adhere CO2, which is largely nonpolar. This adhesion can significantly alter the wettability characteristics of the mineral surface and consequently influence capillary/residual trapping and other multiphase flow processes in porous media. Here, the conditions influencing adhesion between CO2 and homogeneous mineral surfaces were studied using static pendant contact angle measurements and captive advancing/receding tests. The prevalence of adhesion was sensitive to both surface roughness an

Confined Liquids Studied by Resonance Shear Measurement: Molecular Mechanism of Lubrication.

Confined liquids present intriguing phenomena not only for foundational research but also for various engineering applications, particularly in tribology. When liquids are confined in a nanospace between solid substrates, they exhibit unique properties different from those of the bulk state due to altered molecular packing and motion restrictions and/or molecular interaction with the substrate surfaces. It has profound implications in the study of lubrication, especially in boundary lubrication where energy efficient low-viscosity lubricants typically lead to high friction and wear. Recent fin

Nanopatterning of beaded poly(lactic acid) nanofibers for highly electroactive, breathable, UV-shielding and antibacterial protective membranes.

Despite great potential in fabrication of biodegradable protective membranes by electrospinning of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibers, it is still thwarted by smooth surfaces and poor electroactivity that challenge the promotion of electret properties and long-term air filtration performance. Here, a microwave-assisted synthetic method was used to customize dielectric TiO2 nanocrystals of ultrasmall and uniform dimensions (∼30 nm), which were homogeneously embedded at beaded PLA nanofibers (PLA@TiO2, diameter of around 280 nm) by the combined "electrospinning-electrospray" approach. With small

Observation of Termination-Dependent Topological Connectivity in a Magnetic Weyl Kagome Lattice.

Engineering surfaces and interfaces of materials promises great potential in the field of heterostructures and quantum matter designers, with the opportunity to drive new many-body phases that are absent in the bulk compounds. Here, we focus on the magnetic Weyl kagome system Co3Sn2S2 and show how for the terminations of different samples the Weyl points connect differently, still preserving the bulk-boundary correspondence. Scanning tunneling microscopy has suggested such a scenario indirectly, and here, we probe the Fermiology of Co3Sn2S2 directly, by linking it to its real space surface dis

Characteristics of hybrid chitosan/phospholipid-sterol, peptide coatings on plasma activated PEEK polymer.

In this paper, we propose a method of obtaining multi-component surface coatings on PEEK polymer, which is becoming increasingly interested in a very wide branch of medicine - orthopedics. Thanks to the plasma techniques used and due to the presence of chitosan, the materials obtained are characterized by sterility, antisepticity, can accelerate wound healing, and serve as a drug delivery system directly to the tissues in need. In addition, the use of ternary Langmuir-Blodgett (lipid-sterol, peptide) films has resulted in significant change of surfaces polarity. The physico-chemical properties

Deformability and intrinsic material properties of neonatal red blood cells.

Whole cell and membrane deformability are essential for red blood cell (RBC) survival and for effective blood flow. Neonatal RBCs display several specific properties (eg, large size, high hemoglobin F) that could influence their deformation characteristics and contribute to their shortened life span. The present study was designed to compare selected rheologic properties (cellular deformability, pressure required to aspirate RBC into micropipettes, static and dynamic viscoelastic material properties) of neonatal and adult RBCs. RBC deformability, as studied by a rheoscope, was similar for neon

The Potential Role of SP-G as Surface Tension Regulator in Tear Film: From Molecular Simulations to Experimental Observations.

The ocular surface is in constant interaction with the environment and with numerous pathogens. Therefore, complex mechanisms such as a stable tear film and local immune defense mechanisms are required to protect the eye. This study describes the detection, characterization, and putative role of surfactant protein G (SP-G/SFTA2) with respect to wound healing and surface activity. Bioinformatic, biochemical, and immunological methods were combined to elucidate the role of SP-G in tear film. The results show the presence of SP-G in ocular surface tissues and tear film (TF). Increased expression

The role of natural processes and surface energy of inhaled engineered nanoparticles on aggregation and corona formation.

The surface chemistry of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) becomes more important as their size decreases and enters the nanometer-range. This review explains the fundamental properties of the surface chemistry of nanoparticles, and argues that their agglomeration and the formation of corona around them are natural processes that reduce surface energy. ENP agglomeration and surface corona formation are further discussed in the context of inhaled ENPs, as the lung is a major port of ENP entry to the body. The pulmonary surfactant layer, which the inhaled ENPs first encounter as they land on the l

Nanoparticles in medicine: therapeutic applications and developments.

Nanotechnology is the understanding and control of matter generally in the 1-100 nm dimension range. The application of nanotechnology to medicine, known as nanomedicine, concerns the use of precisely engineered materials at this length scale to develop novel therapeutic and diagnostic modalities. Nanomaterials have unique physicochemical properties, such as ultra small size, large surface area to mass ratio, and high reactivity, which are different from bulk materials of the same composition. These properties can be used to overcome some of the limitations found in traditional therapeutic and

Surgical pearl: Use of micropore tape for easy harvestation and transfer of suction blister epidermal graft.

Epidermal graft produced by suction is useful in treating vitiligo. However, it is very difficult to handle thin, flimsy, and translucent epidermis due to its in-curling and wrinkling properties. This is due to the hemispherical blister roof surface area which is twice its circular base. The correction of the epidermal surface and its resizing is a cumbersome and time-consuming task during epidermal grafting. To combat these problems, the blister roof is patched with micropore adhesive tape as a novel technique for harvestation and transfer of the suction blister graft.

Anti-eikonal equation of an eigenmirror.

We call a surface that appears undistorted when viewed in a curved mirror an eigensurface and the mirror an eigenmirror. Such pairs are described by a first-order nonlinear partial differential equation of the form a0+a1ux+a2uy+a3uxuy+a4ux2+a5uy2=0, where ai=ai(x,y,u), which we call the anti-eikonal equation. We give examples of symbolic and numerical solutions, including pairs that are geometrically congruent. Ray tracing simulations are included that visually confirm the unusual properties of these surfaces.

Evaluation of the Storage Stability of Starch-Based Films Containing Grape Seed Oil.

The increasing environmental concerns associated with petroleum-based packaging materials have accelerated the development of biodegradable alternatives, with starch-based films emerging as promising candidates. This study investigates the influence of grape seed oil (5-15 wt.%) and storage time (up to 5 months) on the mechanical, thermal, structural, and surface properties of potato-starch-based films for biodegradable packaging applications. Oil incorporation improved the initial film performance, increasing tensile strength (1.27-3.11 MPa), enhancing thermal stability (melting temperature u…

Multiscale numerical investigation into the effects of rock content and rock particle size on the macroscopic and mesoscopic mechanical characteristics of soil rock mixture.

Soil-rock mixture is a typical two-phase composite material. The physicomechanical properties and relative quantities of each component greatly influence the macroscopic mechanical properties of the soil-rock mixture. This study takes the macroscopic and mesoscopic coupling perspective and uses the discrete element direct shear test as the main method to comprehensively investigate the effects of rock content and rock particle size on the mechanical properties of the soil-rock mixture. The results show that the macroscopic shear strength of soil-rock mixture specimens increases with the increa
