Visual Satire and Covid-19 in the Comics of Billingsley, Bell, and Obuobi.

This essay tracks how elements of satire and seriality are used across select examples of comics by Black-identified author-artists-Ray Billingsley's Curtis, Darrin Bell's Candorville, and diary comics and social media posts by Shirlene Obuobi, MD-to process the potential traumas related to the Covid-19 pandemic, medical racism, and antiblackness at the hospital. Forwarding the scholarship of Tina Campt, Rebecca Wanzo, Danielle Fuentes Morgan, Linda Villarosa, Christina Sharpe, and others, I argue that despite their kaleidoscopic differences, the comic authors discussed variously picture racia

Arthroscopic Fixation of Minimally Displaced Avulsion Fracture of Ischial Tuberosity Using a "Double-Pulley" Suture Anchor Technique.

Avulsion fracture of the ischial tuberosity is an uncommon injury caused by a sudden, forceful eccentric contraction of the hamstrings that avulses the unfused secondary ossification center from the pelvis. Although open reduction and internal fixation are recommended when fragment displacement exceeds 2 cm, reports describing minimally invasive solutions are still lacking. In addition, for those patients who are engaged in high-intensity sports or physical activities, conservative treatment can compromise hamstring power, delay return to sport, and occasionally result in chronic ischial pain.

Beyond the gut: spectrum of magnetic surgery devices.

Since the 1970s, magnetic force has been used to augment modern surgical techniques with the aims of minimizing surgical trauma and optimizing minimally-invasive systems. The majority of current clinical applications for magnetic surgery are largely centered around gastrointestinal uses-such as gastrointestinal or bilioenteric anastomosis creation, stricturoplasty, sphincter augmentation, and the guidance of nasoenteric feeding tubes. However, as the field of magnetic surgery continues to advance, the development and clinical implementation of magnetic devices has expanded to treat a variety o

Exercise-Induced Rhabdomyolysis Causing Acute Kidney Injury: A Potential Threat to Gym Lovers.

Rhabdomyolysis, by definition, means the breakdown of muscles. The common causes are trauma, immobility, illicit drug use, medications, toxins, infections, potassium imbalance, hypothyroid or hyperthyroid states, hypothermia or hyperthermia, and some congenital muscular dystrophy. Exercise or exertion-induced rhabdomyolysis is a very uncommon entity and potentially rising among young generations amid getting perfect body shape as influenced by social platforms. However, rhabdomyolysis can lead to lethal complications, most commonly acute kidney injury leading to dialysis, disseminated intravas

Acute Pancreatitis: A Rare Post-Colonoscopy Sequela.

Abdominal pain is a common but benign symptom after colonoscopy. We report a case of acute pancreatitis that occurred just after an elective screening colonoscopy; this is a rare event with very few reported cases. A healthy, asymptomatic male underwent screening colonoscopy at our center and developed abdominal pain and emesis after the procedure. An abdominal X-ray ruled out perforation but laboratory tests revealed elevated levels of amylase and lipase. The patient had no etiological risk factors for pancreatitis. The presumed mechanism of pancreatitis in this case is mechanical and pressur

BACKGROUND: The management of patients with impaled unexploded devices is rare in the civilian setting. However, as the lines of the traditional battlefield are blurred by modern warfare and terrorist activity, emergency providers should be familiar with facility protocols, plans, and contact information of their local resources for unexploded devices. CASE REPORT: A 44-year-old male sustained a close-proximity blast injury to his lower extremities while manipulating a mortar-type firework. He presented to the regional trauma center with an open, comminuted distal femur fracture and radiograp

Intercondylar Fractures of the Distal Humerus in Patients Younger Than 20 Years: Capsulectomy Results.

Few reports in the literature have been dedicated to young patients with distal fractures of the humerus, and few have addressed subsequent indications to improve range of motion (ROM). This article is a retrospective review of the elbow flexion-extension ROM in 31 patients (age, 12-19 years) who had been treated with open reduction and internal fixation of intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus at a level I trauma center from 1991 through 2013. The ROM of patients who underwent capsulectomy was compared with that of those who did not. Main outcome measures were ROM in degrees and need

The Baby-Friendly journey in a US public hospital.

In May of 2007, San Francisco General Hospital & Trauma Center became the first Baby-Friendly certified hospital in San Francisco. This quality improvement program began in 1999 and took 8 years to complete. Challenges to completing this goal included a population that has myriad social issues including non-English-speaking clients, drug abuse, poverty, and homelessness. Further complications included a constantly changing group of perinatal healthcare providers with little-to-no breast-feeding knowledge, hospital practices that did not support rooming-in and skin-to-skin contact, and lack of
