PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze our experience with the influence of reconstructive techniques at the time of pelvic exenteration on morbidity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 1986 and December 1998, 60 pelvic exenterations for gynecologic malignancies were performed in our hospital. Forty-five were selected for this study because they met two criteria: they were performed by the same team (gynecologic oncologist), and they had similar primary tumors. STUDY DESIGN: The pathology records of 769 female bone marrow transplant recipients from a five-year period at Duke University Medical Center were reviewed. One hundred fifteen cervicovaginal smears from 78 patients were available for evaluation; of these, 85 smears from 61 patients were selected. Only cases from patients with a complete medical history, including menopausal status and therapeutic regimen, were included in this study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the safety of initiating labor using a sustained-release prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) vaginal insert at a nonuniversity-based community hospital.
STUDY DESIGN: Data were compiled from a chart review of all cases in which the insert (Cervidil) was used during a 16-month period. Continuous uterine activity and fetal heart rate (FHR) tracings were evaluated for 12 hours after dosing. Diagnostic reproducibility and accuracy in evaluating cervical/vaginal smears were the focus of this study concerning intralaboratory quality control. A colorimetric one-tube nested PCR was developed for the detection of Trichomonas vaginalis in clinical vaginal discharge specimens. In this study, we analyze the regulation of the squamous-specific gene, cornifin alpha, by estrogen and retinoic acid in vaginal and uterine epithelial cells. In ovariectomized animals, the vaginal epithelium consists of a stratified, nonkeratinizing epithelium which changes into a highly-stratified, keratinizing epithelium upon treatment with estradiol.
