A method has been developed for species-selective analysis of organotin compounds in solid, biological samples. The procedure is based on accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) of analytes and includes extraction of the tin species with a methanol-water (90% methanol) solution of acetic acid/sodium acetate containing tropolone (0.03% w/ v), their ethylation with NaBEt(4), and separation and detection by GC-FPD. Our aim was to investigate the effect of BCNU and DBD combined chemotherapy in patients with recurrent malignant gliomas. Forty-six patients were treated with combined chemotherapy. Out of 26 patients with anaplastic astrocytomas 11 were originally low-grade where no postoperative radiotherapy was applied. Fifteen patients with anaplastic astrocytoma responded well to the chemotherapy and 9 survived longer than one year. Median survival time was 14 months. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is uncommon in patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. PURPOSE: To evaluate the biologic interactions and toxicities of melphalan (L-PAM) combined with 41.8 degrees C whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) for 60 minutes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with refractory cancer were treated (May 1992 to May 1995) with WBH alone during week 1) thereafter patients were randomized to receive either L-PAM alone on week 2 and L-PAM plus WBH on week 5, or the reverse sequence.
