PROBLEM: Isolation of viable cervical lymphocyte populations and characterization of their function in healthy tissue is necessary to understand immunity in the genital tract.
METHODS: Normal, cervical tissue was digested using a multi-enzymatic digestion procedure. Lymphocytes were characterized using FACS analysis and ELISPOT analysis for immunoglobulin secreting cells.

The cellular responses in regional lymphoid organs of C57B1/6 mice were examined, following protective immunization with 20 krad.-irradiated cercariae of S. mansoni. Over a period of 5 years, lymphocyte subpopulations and their markers of activation were studied prospectively in 56 first degree relatives of Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic probands. The composition of the cellular infiltrate in thyroid glands of 12 patients with juvenile autoimmune thyroiditis (JAIT) was followed for a period of 1 year. The diagnosis of JAIT was based on a firm goiter and on cytologic criteria of lymphocytic thyroiditis.
