Meningo-encephalitis presenting as an acute paranoid psychosis.

A twenty-seven year old women with meningo-encephalitis and paranoid symptoms is presented. The patient was admitted to a psychiatric unit where, two months previously, her brother had been under treatment for a paranoid schizophrenic episode. The diagnostic lumbar puncture was performed after several days of increasing periods of disorientation, stupor, incontinence, posturing, and perseveration. There was no fever, no signs of meningeal irritation, and no localizing neurologic deficit. The problem of recognizing organic brain disease presenting as an acute psychotic episode is discussed. In

Histological Analysis of a Mouse Model of the 22q11.2 Microdeletion Syndrome.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is associated with a high risk of developing various psychiatric and developmental disorders, including schizophrenia and early-onset Parkinson's disease. Recently, a mouse model of this disease, Del(3.0Mb)/+, mimicking the 3.0 Mb deletion which is most frequently found in patients with 22q11.2DS, was generated. The behavior of this mouse model was extensively studied and several abnormalities related to the symptoms of 22q11.2DS were found. However, the histological features of their brains have been little addressed. Here we describe the cytoarchitecture

A Latent Class Analysis of Predictors for Engaging in Sex: A Study with Ethnically Diverse High School Students.

Sexual activity occurs among a large portion of young adults and adolescents, including high school students. While about 40% of high school students nationwide have engaged in sexual intercourse, more information is needed about how individual characteristics may relate to larger patterns of adolescent sexual behavior. This exploratory study utilized a latent class analysis (LCA) to identify clusters of high school students (N = 801) based on demographic characteristics, sexual refusal skills, healthy relationship skills, sociosexuality, internalizing symptoms, alcohol use, various forms of s

Mental Disorders: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by recurrent intrusive thoughts, images, or urges (ie, obsessions) and repetitive mental acts or behaviors (ie, compulsions). Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a chronic preoccupation with perceived flaws in physical appearance that leads to repetitive behaviors (ie, rituals). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition) (DSM-5) places both disorders under a new category, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, along with hoarding disorder, excoriation disorder, and trichotillomania. Both OCD and BDD cause ma

Stealing behavior and impulsivity in individuals with kleptomania who have been arrested for shoplifting.

OBJECTIVES: Kleptomania is characterized by strong urges to steal and is one of only a few psychiatric disorders defined by illegal behaviors, but the clinical characteristics of individuals with kleptomania who have faced legal consequences due to their behavior are poorly understood. METHOD: From 2001 to 2012, we recruited 107 adult participants with DSM-IV kleptomania. Participants with a history of shoplifting-related arrest (N=82) were compared with those who had no such history (N=25) on demographics, clinical features, and a self-report measure of impulsivity. RESULTS: Participants wh

Investigating the underlying mechanisms of aberrant behaviors in bipolar disorder from patients to models: Rodent and human studies.

Psychiatric patients with bipolar disorder suffer from states of depression and mania, during which a variety of symptoms are present. Current treatments are limited and neurocognitive deficits in particular often remain untreated. Targeted therapies based on the biological mechanisms of bipolar disorder could fill this gap and benefit patients and their families. Developing targeted therapies would benefit from appropriate animal models which are challenging to establish, but remain a vital tool. In this review, we summarize approaches to create a valid model relevant to bipolar disorder. We

A critical role for NMDA receptors in parvalbumin interneurons for gamma rhythm induction and behavior.

Synchronous recruitment of fast-spiking (FS) parvalbumin (PV) interneurons generates gamma oscillations, rhythms that emerge during performance of cognitive tasks. Administration of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists alters gamma rhythms, and can induce cognitive as well as psychosis-like symptoms in humans. The disruption of NMDA receptor (NMDAR) signaling specifically in FS PV interneurons is therefore hypothesized to give rise to neural network dysfunction that could underlie these symptoms. To address the connection between NMDAR activity, FS PV interneurons, gamma oscillatio

Behavioral Medicine in Cholangiocarcinoma: Bridging the Gap Between Biology and Behavior.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is an aggressive malignant tumor with extremely poor prognosis, and its global incidence is increasing, posing a growing public health burden. Behavioral factors, such as diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, and psychological status, are closely associated with the development of CCA. This narrative review delves into the multidimensional burden of CCA, including psychological distress, symptom profiles, and socioeconomic impacts. It also summarizes evidence from related gastrointestinal cancers to explain the biological mechanisms through which lifes

The Visualization of Nocturnal Scratching Behavior in Pediatric Atopic Dermatitis: Facilitating Shared Decision-Making and Assessing the Efficacy of Treatment.

Itching is a subjective symptom that is especially difficult to assess in pediatric atopic dermatitis (AD) patients with chronic pruritus since early infancy. This study aimed to assess the utility of the Itch Tracker (Maruho Co. Ltd., Osaka, Japan), a smartwatch application, in visualizing nocturnal scratching and facilitating shared decision-making (SDM) in two pediatric AD cases treated with nemolizumab. Objective monitoring revealed discrepancies between self-reported itch and actual scratching behavior, leading to appropriate treatment initiation and significant improvements in scratching

Preschool Staff Spot Social Communication Difficulties, But Not Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors in Young Autistic Children.

To fulfill the criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), symptoms must be present across domains and contexts. We assessed preschool staff's ratings of social communication and interaction (SCI) and restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in 3-year-old siblings of children with ASD, either diagnosed (n = 12) or not diagnosed (n = 36) with ASD, and typically developing siblings with no family history of ASD (n = 16). Ratings of SCI were more accurate than RRBs in differentiating the ASD group from the two other groups, and only the SCI ratings correlated with clinical assessment of social

Repetitive and stereotyped behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorders in the second year of life.

This study examined repetitive and stereotyped behaviors (RSB) in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD, n = 50), developmental delays without ASD (DD; n = 25) and typical development (TD, n = 50) between 18 and 24 months of age. Children with ASD demonstrated significantly higher frequency and longer duration of RSB with objects, body, and sensory behaviors during a systematic behavior sample than both the DD and TD groups. RSB with objects were related to concurrent measures of symbolic capacity and social competence in the second year and predicted developmental outcomes as well as s

Behavioral characteristics of children with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.

We explored the behavioral characteristics of 24 children with Perthes' disease. Parents completed standard psychological self-administered questionnaires regarding their child's behavior: the Conners Parent Symptom Questionnaire and the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist. One third (33%) of the children had abnormally high scores in profiles associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (impulsive, hyperactive, and psychosomatic categories), much higher than the 3-5% incidence of ADHD in the general population. They also tended to have difficulties with school and social int

Behavior therapy in a family context: treating elective mutism.

This paper discusses the necessity of using both behavioral and family approaches in combination, while working with electively mute children. The symptom and its significance within the family system is presented along with a rationale for avoiding the pitfalls of individual approaches with such children. A case history outlining specific behavioral techniques is described in detail with an exploration of the use of reinforcement theory, counter-conditioning, and successive approximations in bringing about change in electively mute children. The need for bringing about changes within the fami

The Worry Behaviors Inventory-Perinatal Revised: Adaptation and Initial Validation for Use in Perinatal Samples.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a leading mental health concern during pregnancy and the postpartum (perinatal) period. People with GAD engage in problematic behaviors to manage their distress. However, the extent of GAD behaviors during the perinatal period may not be adequately captured by the Worry Behaviors Inventory (WBI), the most comprehensive measure of GAD behaviors to date. We evaluated the structure of the initial WBI item-pool and then evaluated the internal consistency, construct validity, and predictive utility of the Perinatal Revised WBI (WBI-PR) in a sample of 214 perina

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Illness Anxiety: Examining Commonalities and Comorbidity.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and illness anxiety disorder (IAD) often co-occur. Cognitive-behavioral models of both disorders overlap and include maladaptive attentional processes, misinterpretation of thoughts and physical sensations, and engagement in repetitive behaviors in an attempt to reduce associated distress. Given commonalities in their presentation and their common co-occurrence, it is important to understand how illness anxiety affects the presentation and treatment of OCD. In this article, theoretical conceptualizations of OCD and IAD and their comorbid presentation are out

Toxic behaviors in online multiplayer games: Prevalence, perception, risk factors of victimization, and psychological consequences.

The rapid proliferation of online multiplayer games has opened a new avenue for aggressive behaviors such as hostile communication, sabotaging, and griefing. The present investigation explores the prevalence, perception, risk factors, and consequences of victimization in toxic behaviors. A total of 2097 Hungarian gamers (88.5% male, Mage  = 26.2 years, SD = 6.8) completed an online questionnaire. Most (66%) were victims of such incidents in the past year, and gamers considered the problem of toxic behaviors as severe. Younger gamers who spent more time playing competitive videogames (especiall

Domoic acid induced status epilepticus promotes aggressive behavior in rats.

Domoic acid (DA), a naturally occurring environmental toxin, has been observed to induce status epilepticus in humans, sea lions and pelicans. In a recent Sprague Dawley rat model, domoic acid dosing induced a state of status epilepticus which, after a symptom-free latent period without further dosing, progressed to recurrent spontaneous seizures, a hallmark of epilepsy. Certain individuals in this study also developed unusual behavioral changes, in particular an atypical aggression towards conspecifics. In this report we characterized the progression of aggressive behaviors after DA-induced s

Punding and computer addiction in Parkinson's disease.

Punding is a stereotypical behavior in which there is an intense fascination with repetitive handling and examining of mechanical objects, such as taking apart watches and radios or arranging common objects (lining up pebbles, rocks, or other small objects). This disabling condition, different from both obsessive-compulsive disorder and mania, is probably underreported. Punding is thought to be related to dopaminergic stimulation, although only a few observations of this condition in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) under therapy has been reported. We report a man with PD who developed a

We report a case of utilization behavior that was examined neuropathologically. A 72-year-old right-handed male patient, who was admitted with a complaint of transient loss of consciousness, displayed utilization behavior several times. He used daily objects that were placed in front of him, such as a teacup and a toothbrush, without instructions to do so. If the examiner asked the patient not to use the objects, the patient did not use them. MRI revealed acute infarction of the left superior frontal gyrus, where decreased blood flow was revealed by SPECT. The patient died of an acute worsenin
