We reviewed 81 consecutive ABG I primary total hip replacements implanted in 72 patients between January 1993 and December 1998. The mean follow-up was 8.2 (range 7-12) years. There was significant polyethylene wear and osteolysis associated with the acetabular cup . BACKGROUND: Debris displaced from the articular and backside surfaces of the polyethylene inserts of modular tibial components is considered a chief cause of osteolysis at the sites of total knee arthroplasties. A new technique using calcium sulfate augmentation for root coverage is described. Three consecutive cases were treated with the calcium sulfate technique adjacent to teeth being treated with the classic connective tissue grafting technique. Although this is only a pilot study, the postoperative results of the calcium sulfate-treated sites showed similar tissue shape, color, and contour to the adjacent grafted sites. The amount of root coverage was also similar.
