Cartilage injuries in distal radial fractures.

Subchondral hematomas have been found with arthroscopy in one third of patients with dislocated distal radial fractures. The aim of the present, prospective study was to determine whether these hematomas might cause radiographic osteoarthrosis. We studied 41 patients (age 20-57 years, 22 women) with a dislocated distal radial fracture. At the time of fracture, 12 patients had subchondral hematomas in a radiocarpal compartment without a fracture line, as defined by arthroscopy. The 1-year follow-up included clinical and radiographic examinations. At follow-up, radiographic subchondral bone plat

[The fixateur-externe-osteosynthesis without osseous support (external distance-osteosynthesis) in the lower limbs. Biomechanic, surgical and osteoplastic basic principles (author's transl)].

The stability of external distance osteosynthesis for complete tibia and femur defects rests solely on the rigidity of the external support. The rigidity of the external support is an function of the mechanical data of its individual elements, of the hold between the bone and the other system, as well as of the individually optimized construction form. The response of an osseous contact area which is not resistant to compression when external osteosynthesis is applied is mechanically similar to the response to distance osteosynthesis in the presence of a defect. The basic application rules for

Effects of Erythropoietin-Promoted Fracture Healing on Bone Turnover Markers in Cats.

In orthopaedics, erythropoietin (EPO) is applied in the preoperative management of anaemic patients, but also as a stimulating factor to assist bone regeneration due to its angiogenic and osteoinductive potential. Since orthopaedists mainly rely on their clinical experience to assess bone healing, additional and more objective methods such as studying the dynamics of bone markers are needed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the plasma activity of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), the N-terminal propeptide of type I collagen (PINP), the C-terminal telopeptide of type

Nutrient and Hormonal Effects on Long Bone Growth in Healthy and Obese Children: A Literature Review.

Longitudinal bone growth is mediated through several mechanisms including macro- and micronutrients, and endocrine and paracrine hormones. These mechanisms can be affected by childhood obesity as excess adiposity may affect signaling pathways, place undue stress on the body, and affect normal physiology. This review describes the physiology of the epiphyseal growth plate, its regulation under healthy weight and obesity parameters, and bone pathology following obesity. A literature review was performed utilizing PubMed, PMC, NIH, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews pertinent to horm

Treatment of a Large Tibial Non-Union Bone Defect in a Cat Using Xenograft with Canine-Derived Cancellous Bone, Demineralized Bone Matrix, and Autograft.

A 17-month-old domestic short-hair cat was referred due to a non-union in the left tibia. The initial repair, conducted 3 months prior at another animal hospital, involved an intramedullary (IM) pin and wire to address a comminuted fracture. Unfortunately, the wire knot caused a skin tract, resulting in osteomyelitis. Although the wire knot was removed at that hospital, the draining tract persisted, continuously discharging exudate. Upon evaluation, the first surgery was reassessed and revised, involving the removal of the IM pin and the application of external skeletal fixation alongside an a

Stafne's Bone Defect Correlated with Submandibular Glands: A Case Report and CBCT and MRI Analysis.

Stafne's bone defect is a developmental anatomic bone defect in the lingual side of the mandible in the area of the mandibular angle that is filled with proliferation or translocation of adjacent structures such as salivary gland tissue. The etiology is still undefined, and two hypotheses are proposed: one is the glandular related to the submandibular or sublingual glands and the second is ischemic that affects the vascularization of the mandibular lingual. Usually, Stafne's bone defect is accidentally detected on panoramic radiographs during dental treatments as a well-limited radiolucency im

Nuclear FGFR2 regulates musculoskeletal integration within the developing limb.

BACKGROUND: Bent bone dysplasia syndrome (BBDS), a congenital skeletal disorder caused by dominant mutations in fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2), is characterized by bowed long bones within the limbs. We previously showed that the FGFR2 mutations in BBDS enhance nuclear and nucleolar localization of the receptor; however, exactly how shifts in subcellular distribution of FGFR2 affect limb development remained unknown. RESULTS: Targeted expression of the BBDS mutations in the lateral plate mesoderm of the developing chick induced angulated hindlimbs, a hallmark feature of the diseas

Bone healing of severe acetabular defects after revision arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Healing of acetabular bone grafts may be difficult to assess in conventional radiographs. We used PET to analyze healing of morselized bone allografts, impacted in large osteolytic acetabular defects at revision arthroplasty. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 7 cases had a cup revision because of loosening, with repair of a segmental defect using a perforated, wide and thin plate. The osteolytic acetabulum was impacted with morselized bone allograft before cementing a polyethylene cup. [(18)F]-fluoride PET scans were used to monitor bone healing inside the graft bed 1 week, 4 week

Femoral trabecular bone of osteoarthritic and normal subjects in an age and sex matched group.

OBJECTIVE: To describe changes to the cancellous structure of femoral bone from patients with severe primary osteoarthritis by comparison with age and sex matched controls. METHOD: Specimens were taken from 18 male and 18 female pairs. One of each pair was a normal control, the other having severe primary osteoarthritis which required hip arthroplasty. Undecalcified cancellous bone blocks were embedded in resin, sectioned and impregnated with silver. Histoquantitation was performed using image analysis. Using a plate model for the trabecular structure of bone, an estimate was made of bone vol

Titanium fibermetal segmental replacement prostheses. A radiographic analysis and review of current status.

Thirteen patients with titanium fibermetal segmental bone/joint prostheses at a minimum follow-up period of six months were reviewed. Detailed radiographic data were analyzed quantitatively in terms of stem/bone interface radiolucency and bone bridging over the segmental portion of the prosthesis at predefined zones. Although stem radiolucent lines were common in this series, only one case had clinical loosening and required reoperation. There were two cases of stem fracture; one achieved extracortical bone union without revision, and the other case required implant removal and revision. Analy

Legg-Calvé-Perthes' disease. Morphological studies in two cases examined at necropsy.

Specimens of femoral heads were studied at necropsy in two cases of Legg-Calve-Perthes' disease. One was that of a boy aged four years ten months who died from appendicitis; the other was from a boy aged six years who died from a malignant glioma. Both had been treated for one and a half years for Legg-Calve-Perthes' disease which was in a stage of repair at the time of death. The diseased femoral heads were moderately flattened but the surface cartilage was intact. Epiphysial bone and bone marrow were partly replaced by cartilage, fibrous tissue and granulation tissue, and new bone was being

Outcomes of Guided Personalized Surgery (GPS)-Navigated Reverse Polarity Total Shoulder Joint Replacement in a Low-Volume Hospital.

Introduction Reverse polarity shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is an evolving surgery, and its indications have expanded over time. Apart from cuff tear arthropathy (CTA), it is recommended for complex proximal humerus fractures in the elderly, inflammatory arthritis, primary osteoarthritis in the elderly, and revision for failed hemiarthroplasty. Glenoid base plate placement and fixation are important to prevent complications, especially glenoid base plate loosening, dislocation, and scapular notching, and to improve longevity. Guided personalized surgery (GPS)-navigated RSA was devised to optimiz

Locking Plate Use with or without Strut Support for Varus Displaced Proximal Humeral Fractures in Elderly Patients.

UNLABELLED: Varus displaced fractures of the proximal part of the humerus, particularly in osteoporotic bone, commonly require open reduction and internal fixation. However, surgical treatment methods remain controversial and have shown inconsistent results. A fibular allograft for indirect medial reduction and strut support has been used in an effort to prevent secondary postoperative varus displacement. However, the long-term outcomes of this method require confirmation. We hypothesized that placing a fibular strut parallel to the calcar screw could increase the biomechanical stability of th

Outcome of periprosthetic distal femoral fractures following knee arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: The majority of periprosthetic fractures around the knee occur at the supracondylar region of the distal femur. Fixation of distal femoral fractures in osteoporotic bone with short segment remains a challenge, especially after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Internal fixation of these fractures using locking plates has become popular. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a consecutive series of periprosthetic supracondylar femoral fractures treated with locked periarticular plate fixation with regard to surgical procedure, complications and clinical outcome. Innovative photobiomodulation-enhanced T-PRF in posterior mandibular fractures: a randomized pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular body fractures are common maxillofacial injuries, often resulting from road traffic accidents. Optimal management seeks anatomical reduction and stable fixation. Recent advances highlight the adjunctive use of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and Titanium-Prepared Platelet-Rich Fibrin (T-PRF) to enhance bone healing. LLLT stimulates osteogenesis and angiogenesis, while T-PRF provides sustained growth factor release. This pilot study examines the synergistic potential of LLLT and T-PRF in improving bone regeneration and clinical outcomes in mandibular body fracture repair.

Surgical treatment of non-unions in the ulna and radius: a one-year outcome study.

The incidence of non-unions of the forearm following conservative or surgical treatment of forearm fractures ranges from 2% to 5.3%. These non-unions can lead to significant limitations in the patient's physical capabilities, necessitating an appropriate treatment plan. The aim of this study was to evaluate osseous consolidation of forearm non-unions after six months and one year as well as to assess patient-reported outcomes. A total of 36 patients with non-unions of the forearm, operatively treated in our department between 01/10 and 12/21, completed the follow-up period for this study. Radi

Evaluation of bone regeneration in mandible large defect using undifferentiated adipose stem cells loaded on gelatin carrier: An animal model case study.

Background. Large mandibular defects are considered difficult reconstructive challenges for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Cell therapy, as an alternative technique, might increase the speed of bone regeneration. This study aimed to investigate bone regeneration in large defects of dog mandibles using allogenic adipose-derived stem cells on gelatin foam as a cell carrier. Methods. The tissue engineering phase consisted of the sampling of adult dogs' adipose tissue that can easily be isolated from adipose stem cells (ASCs) of the dogs, ASCs were cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium

Improvement of impaired calcium and skeletal homeostasis in vitamin D receptor knockout mice by a high dose of calcitriol and maxacalcitol.

Vitamin D plays a major role in mineral and skeletal homeostasis through interaction with the nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR) of target cells. Recent reports have indicated that some cellular effects of vitamin D may occur via alternative signaling pathways, but concrete evidence for mineral homeostasis has not been shown in vivo. To investigate this issue, the actions of calcitriol (1,25D) and maxacalcitol (OCT), which were developed for treatment of uremia-induced secondary hyperparathyroidism, were analyzed in VDR knockout (VDR(-/-)) mice. The VDR(-/-) mice were fed a rescue diet immediate

Maxillofacial and mandibular fractures.

Any traumatic event that produces maxillofacial and/or mandibular fractures generally results in gross and usually severe patient disfigurement and often results in the patient's inability to eat and drink. These fractures are exceptionally rewarding cases as simple techniques may be performed resulting in a successful functional outcome (ability to eat and drink) within a very short period of time (24 hours) after fracture stabilization. A markedly improved cosmetic appearance follows shortly thereafter once inflammation and edema resolve. The primary principle of fracture treatment, ie, prov
