Functional analyses were performed with microsomal human 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 overexpressed in the yeast Pichia pastoris. Cell extracts or microsomes from transformed strains displayed dehydrogenase and reductase activities, which were up to 10 times higher than in human liver microsomes, while for whole cells cortisone reduction but no dehydrogenase activity was observed. A 63-year-old woman with a history of acute myeloid leukemia followed by stem cell transplantation presented with acute heart failure. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a preserved left ventricular ejection fraction with severe ventricular hypertrophy and signs of elevated filling pressures indicating infiltrative cardiomyopathy. She died from cardiac arrest due to cardiogenic shock. The autopsy revealed an enlarged heart with a fish-flesh appearance. Here, we describe a rare case of a myeloid sarcoma of the heart.

Two hundred thirteen testicular specimens of men with nonobstructive azoospermia were obtained by large-needle percutaneous aspiration biopsy. The mean values of the number of seminiferous tubules per histologic section, dimension, weight, and the fraction of biopsies with spermatogenetic cells (53, 0.2 x 0.3 x 0.62 cm, 385 mg, and 63%, respectively) were similar to those obtained by open or other surgical biopsy techniques that were used for assisted fertilization in the same type of patients.

The rate of collagen synthesis in the cell layer fraction of the skin fibroblasts derived from a patient with Marfan syndrome was greater than that in the normal fibroblasts. Neither the relative content of type III collagen nor the level of prolyl and lysyl hydroxylations in type I collagen changed. Intracellular degradation rate of collagen in Marfan syndrome fibroblasts was decreased to one fifth of that in the normal fibroblasts. These results suggest that abnormal collagen metabolism may be related to the pathogenesis of clinical manifestations of Marfan syndrome.

T lymphocytes were fractionated according to their receptors for IgG (TG) or IgM (TM) and scored in 37 patients with Graves' disease (17 hyperthyroid and untreated. 10 euthyroid on antithyroid drugs, 10 in long-term remission after radioiodine therapy). TG percentages were very low both in untreated and in drug-treated patients. By contrast, normal TG levels were observed in patients in long-term remission. These data are consistent with the hypothesis of a defective suppressor cell activity in Graves' disease.

The results of colpocervicoscopic examination of more than 15,000 females suggested cervical carcinoma in 345 cases, which was confirmed histologically in 319 patients. A detailed morphological and cytogenetic investigation carried out in 36 patients with preclinical form of TIaNXMO invasive carcinoma of cervix uteri established a relationship of mitotic activity, pathological mitosis count and fraction of cells with X-chromatin, on the one hand, and the depth of tumor invasion, on the other. The stages of complex examination of patients with pathology of cervix uteri are discussed.
