Residual material from liquid-based pap (LBP) test has been used for molecular testing of Human Papilloma Virus (HR HPV) DNA. LBP test specimens (1,025) were evaluated to determine how often residual material was insufficient to perform microbiological testing. The specimens were tested for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhea (CCGT) alone and in combination with HR HPV(CCGT + HR HPV), using PCR method and HYBRID CAPTURE 2, respectively. A 6-month-old Thai girl presented with clinical manifestations of dengue shock syndrome (DSS) with encephalopathy and urinary tract infection. Serology and PCR tests were negative whereas dengue virus type 2 was isolated. Human anisakiasis is a zoonosis acquired by eating raw or undercooked infected seafood. Herein, we report a case of acute dysentery caused by anisakiasis in a 64-year-old man in Malaysia. A colonoscopy was performed and a nematode larva was found penetrating the mucosa of the ascending colon. Bleeding was observed at the site of penetration. We report on a 5-year-old girl who suddenly collapsed and died while dancing at a family party. Histological examination of the heart including the cardiac conduction system revealed lymphocytic infiltrations of the sinu-atrial node and perivascular infiltration in the atrio-ventricular region. In an urban school district, 636 students in grades 9-12 were tested for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae by ligase chain reaction assays using specimens collected for routine urinalyses during sports physical examinations. Our routine tests for tropical viruses document that several hundreds of Dengue fever cases are imported into Germany every year. In contrast, hemorrhagic fever cases are rarely diagnosed in Germany. Our investigations suggest that this low number is due to the different living conditions of the local population in the tropics compared with that of travellers from Europe or North America. Improved methods for detecting Dengue virus infections, e.g. three different antibody tests and the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for detection of viral RNA, have been developed.
