From 1980 to 1982, a sample of 968 pregnant Navajo women in New Mexico was enrolled in a prospective study of biologic and sociocultural factors in puerperal infectious morbidity. Past studies have independently implicated both genital infection and psychosocial stressors in perinatal complications, but, to the authors' knowledge, no previous work has concurrently investigated the interactive effects of genital pathogens and psychosocial processes. Endocervical cultures for Mycoplasma hominis and Chlamydia trachomatis were obtained during prenatal visits, and structured interviews were conduct

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma genitalium (Mg) is an emerging sexually transmitted pathogen among men who have sex with men (MSM). Resistance to recommended antimicrobial agents are of public health concern. Few data exist on Mg infections in MSM diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) during primary HIV infection.
METHODS: Participants of the Zurich Primary HIV Study (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT00537966) were systematically offered screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) between April 2019 and September 2020. Screening was performed using an in-house polymerase chain rea

BACKGROUND: The incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) is increasing in Western countries whilst travel plays a major role in STI dissemination worldwide. However, there is no study distinguishing HIV-positive and HIV-negative travellers.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the epidemiological, clinical and biological characteristics of the patients diagnosed with a travel-related STI between 2008 and 2016. We describe and compare the spectrum of STI diagnosed amongst HIV-positive and negative travellers.
METHODS: Overall, 163 travel-related STI were identified in 140 patients

BACKGROUND: In the control of reproductive-tract infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), in low-income and middle-income countries, WHO recommends syndromic management for individuals with symptoms. This intervention was initially developed in areas where prevalence of such infections is high. We investigated the clinical effectiveness and cost of this approach among a group of women with a low prevalence of infection.
METHODS: During a 5-month period, we investigated all women complaining of abnormal vaginal discharge and seeking care at maternal and child health/family

IMPORTANCE: Adolescents and young adults compose almost 50% of all diagnosed sexually transmitted infection (STI) cases annually in the US. Given that these individuals frequently access health care through the emergency department (ED), the ED could be a strategic venue for examining the identification and treatment of STIs.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the cost-effectiveness of screening strategies for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (chlamydia and gonorrhea) in adolescents and young adults who seek acute care at pediatric EDs.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic condition in which inflammation has been shown to contribute to neurodegeneration. Current thinking suggests that deposition of beta-amyloid in the brain promotes inflammation resulting in neuronal damage/death. Alternatively, our data suggest that chronic inflammation observed in late-onset sporadic AD may be stimulated by infection with the obligate, intracellular bacterium, Chlamydia pneumoniae. Our results indicate that C. pneumoniae is found in high frequency in glial cells in areas of neuropathology within the brains of patients with AD. Based on our

Endocervical specimens obtained by cytobrush and conventional cotton wool swabs from 90 women attending a genitourinary medicine clinic were compared for their efficiency in detecting chlamydial infection. Isolation of Chlamydia trachomatis and detection of the chlamydial lipopolysaccharide antigen were attempted on each specimen. Antigen was detected in 18% of cytobrush and 17% of swab specimens. The cytobrush proved less suitable than swabs for isolation because 8 cytobrush specimens (9%) were toxic to the McCoy cells. Toxicity was significantly associated with an infected endocervix (2P = 0

Amino acid requirements of a Chlamydia trachomatis were defined in McCoy cell monolayer cultures, depleted of their nutrient reserves by maintenance in Earle balanced salt solution for at least 2 days, and then treated at infection with 1 microgram of cycloheximide per ml, an inhibitor of host cell protein and deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis. Serum-free Waymouth MB 752/1 medium lacking one amino acid or a group of related amino acids was added to depleted cultures before infection. Eight of the amino acids normally present in MB 752/1 were essential for chlamydial growth, six were advantageous

Adolescents account for 40% of new HIV infections, and HIV testing strategies to increase uptake of testing are needed. A community-based adolescent and youth HIV and health testing campaign was conducted in seven slum neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, from December 2014 to September 2015. Community health workers provided community sensitization and recruited 10- to 24-year-olds to test for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea/chlamydia, and to screen for tuberculosis (TB) and pregnancy. HIV-infected individuals were escorted to the GHESKIO HIV clinic for same-day enrollment in care. Among 3425 ind

BACKGROUND: Curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Treponema pallidum (syphilis), Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Trichomonas vaginalis, remain a major global health concern; yet their epidemiology among forcibly displaced populations is poorly understood. Limited access to healthcare, high-risk exposures and structural vulnerabilities may contribute to a heightened burden of STIs in these populations.
METHODS: A systematic review conducted up to 12 July 2024 assessed the prevalence of syphilis, C. trachomatis, N. gonorrhoeae and T. vaginalis infections amo

Chlamydia pecorum (C. pecorum), an obligate intracellular, gram-negative bacterium, causes endemic infections in livestock. However, data on the strain diversity of C. pecorum infecting yaks in Qinghai, China, remain limited. In this study, we aimed to assess the genetic diversity of C. pecorum in yaks from Qinghai. A total of 1564 rectal swabs were collected from yaks, and C. pecorum DNA was detected using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Positive samples were further analyzed by ompA sequence, and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) targeting seven housekeeping genes (gatA, oppA,

Chlamydia trachomatis infection can be regulated by autophagy-related genes. LncRNA CYTOR has been proven to be involved in autophagy. In this research, we investigated the role of CYTOR in autophagy induced by C. trachomatis and the potential mechanisms. After C. trachomatis infection, CYTOR and MAPK1 were up-regulated and miR-206 was down-regulated, meanwhile, the autophagy-related protein Beclin1 and LC3-Ⅱ/LC3-Ⅰ ratio were increased. Interference with CYTOR or overexpression with miR-206 downregulated the autophagy-related protein Beclin1 and the number of autophagic spots LC3, decreased th

Chlamydia invasion of epithelial cells is a pathogen-driven process involving two functionally distinct effectors - TarP and TmeA. They collaborate to promote robust actin dynamics at sites of entry. Here, we extend studies on the molecular mechanism of invasion by implicating the host GTPase dynamin 2 (Dyn2) in the completion of pathogen uptake. Importantly, Dyn2 function is modulated by TarP and TmeA at the levels of recruitment and activation through oligomerization, respectively. TarP-dependent recruitment requires phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and the small GTPase Rac1, while TmeA has a p
