How lymphocyte-mediated metal sensitivity affects orthopaedic implant performance remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of exposure to nitrogen oxides on peripheral blood natural killer cells.
METHODS: Groups of glass craftsmen and braziers exposed to nitrogen oxides and non-exposed controls were studied. Air concentrations of nitrogen oxides were measured. Mononuclear cells isolated from peripheral blood samples were assayed for natural killer cell activity with K562 target cells in a 51Cr release assay and the percentage of natural killer cells (CD16) was measured by flow cytometry.

The aim of this research was to examine the effects of metals used in dentistry upon magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Ten disk-shaped samples of metals have been used in this study. Each sample has been set into a volunteer who had produced a normal MR image when tested. The subject was imaged in the sagittal, frontal and coronal plane with a 0.1 T MRI device and results examined for MR defects. Au, Ag, Au-Ag-Pd and amalgam produced no defect. In the 24 h after ingestion of 100 microCi of 51Cr-labelled EDTA (edetic acid), controls (22) excreted less than 2.5% of the dose, whereas patients with coeliac disease in relapse (6) excreted between 4.7% and 14.7%. Langerhans cell-mononuclear cell contacts in the epidermis were analysed in minimum positive allergic and toxic patch tests after 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours. No differences between allergic and toxic patch tests were observed in the appearance of Langerhans cells or in the number of Langerhans cell-mononuclear cell contacts. Thus, Langerhans cell-mononuclear cell contacts are not specific for contact allergic reactions, as has previously been suggested.
