Motor stereotypies in autism spectrum disorder: Clinical randomized study and classification proposal.

Motor stereotypies are one of the most frequent features in children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. They may disrupt children's functioning and development and be a potential source of stress for families. Several factors, including sex, age, cognitive ability, and severity of autism spectrum disorder, may influence the presence and intensity of stereotypies. The present study aimed to identify the prevalence of motor stereotypies in a group of children with autism spectrum disorder. In addition, it sought to investigate whether sex, age, cognitive ability, verbal language, neur

Parent-child concordance in reporting of child eating disorder pathology as assessed by the eating disorder examination.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine parent-youth concordance in reporting of eating disorder pathology, as assessed by the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) in a clinical pediatric sample. METHOD: The sample comprised 619 parent-youth dyads of youth (8-18 years) presenting for treatment at a specialist eating disorder clinic. A cross-sectional correlational design was used to examine the association between parent and youth symptom reports. RESULTS: On the whole, parent-youth inter-rater agreement was poor to moderate. Agreement was acceptable for the presence of behavioral sympt

Mental disorders in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Recent research using questionnaire measures has demonstrated high prevalence rates of mental disorders in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, clinical interviews and clinical rather than healthy control groups have rarely been employed. The aim of the present study was to assess mental disorders in patients with COPD with advanced methodology, to identify moderating factors explaining mental co-morbidities and to compare results with a clinical control group without COPD. A standardized clinical interview (F-DIPS) and a range of questionnaires were used to assess mental dis

Characterising factors underlying praxis deficits in chronic left hemisphere stroke patients.

Limb apraxia, a disorder of skilled action not consequent on primary motor or sensory deficits, has traditionally been defined according to errors patients make on neuropsychological tasks. Previous models of the disorder have failed to provide a unified account of patients' deficits, due to heterogeneity in the patients and tasks used. In this study we hypothesised that we may be able to map apraxic deficits onto principal components, some of which may be specific, whilst others may align with other cognitive disorders. We implemented principal component analysis (PCA) to elucidate core facto

Cognitive functions, emotions and personality in woman with fibromyalgia.

Background: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue and cognitive difficulties. A person with FM suffers from pain diffused throughout the body, and accompanied by the feeling of exhaustion and concentration problems, which often impede even simple tasks. Many studies have shown that people with FM suffer from cognitive disorders, including memory disorders. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between fibromyalgia and cognitive functioning (direct memory, arbitrary attention, learning processes), emotional functi

Sudden gains during therapy of social phobia.

The present study investigated the phenomenon of sudden gains in 107 participants with social phobia (social anxiety disorder) who received either cognitive-behavioral group therapy or exposure group therapy without explicit cognitive interventions, which primarily used public speaking situations as exposure tasks. Twenty-two out of 967 session-to-session intervals met criteria for sudden gains, which most frequently occurred in Session 5. Individuals with sudden gains showed similar improvements in the 2 treatment groups. Although cognitive-behavioral therapy was associated with more cognitiv

LIM-kinase1 hemizygosity implicated in impaired visuospatial constructive cognition.

To identify genes important for human cognitive development, we studied Williams syndrome (WS), a developmental disorder that includes poor visuospatial constructive cognition. Here we describe two families with a partial WS phenotype; affected members have the specific WS cognitive profile and vascular disease, but lack other WS features. Submicroscopic chromosome 7q11.23 deletions cosegregate with this phenotype in both families. DNA sequence analyses of the region affected by the smallest deletion (83.6 kb) revealed two genes, elastin (ELN) and LIM-kinase1 (LIMK1). The latter encodes a nove

[Minimal emotional dysfunction and first impression formation in personality disorders].

"Minimal cerebral dysfunctions" are isolated impairments of basic mental functions, which are elements of complex functions like speech. The best described are cognitive dysfunctions such as reading and writing problems, dyscalculia, attention deficits, but also motor dysfunctions such as problems with articulation, hyperactivity or impulsivity. Personality disorders can be characterized by isolated emotional dysfunctions in relation to emotional adequacy, intensity and responsivity. For example, paranoid personality disorders can be characterized by continuous and inadequate distrust, as a di

Cognitive state dependent enhancement of cognitive control with transcranial magnetic stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an effective treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), yet variability of therapeutic responses remains high. A key contributor to this variability may be state-dependent effects of brain stimulation, where activity in underlying circuits may shape the propagation of TMS-evoked activity. Thus, constraining the target circuits' state by engaging cognition may make TMS' effects more consistent. OBJECTIVE: We tested whether TMS' effects on cognitive control, a transdiagnostic construct implicated across psychiatric disorders

Parkinson's disease psychosis associated with accelerated multidomain cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits are associated with poor quality of life and increased risk of development of dementia in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) psychosis. The trajectory of cognitive decline in PD psychosis remains however unclear. OBJECTIVE: We examined this using data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative study. METHODS: We analysed data from patients with drug-naïve PD (n=676) and healthy controls (HC, n=187) over 5 years, and examined all cognitive measures assessed at each time point. We classified patients with PD into those who developed psychosis over th

Brain Dynamics Complexity as a Signature of Cognitive Decline in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Higuchi's fractal dimension (FD) captures brain dynamics complexity and may be a promising method to analyze resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data and detect the neuronal interaction complexity underlying Parkinson's disease (PD) cognitive decline. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to compare FD with a more established index of spontaneous neural activity, the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), and identify through machine learning (ML) models which method could best distinguish across PD-cognitive states, ranging from normal cognition (PD-

Differences in demographic composition and in work, social, and functional limitations among the populations with unipolar depression and bipolar disorder: results from a nationally representative sample.

BACKGROUND: Existing literature on mood disorders suggests that the demographic distribution of bipolar disorder may differ from that of unipolar depression, and also that bipolar disorder may be especially disruptive to personal functioning. Yet, few studies have directly compared the populations with unipolar depressive and bipolar disorders, whether in terms of demographic characteristics or personal limitations. Furthermore, studies have generally examined work-related costs, without fully investigating the extensive personal limitations associated with diagnoses of specific mood disorders

Mechanisms of aerobic exercise effects on the gut microbiota and its metabolites in anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders are prevalent and disabling conditions that frequently co-occur with major depression, alcohol and substance abuse disorders, and personality disorders. While psychopharmacological treatments and cognitive-behavioral therapy are the primary interventions for anxiety disorders, up to 30% of patients exhibit inadequate treatment responses, and approximately 40% relapse within the first year after discontinuing medication. Moreover, medication-related side effects have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. These limitations highlight the urgent need for more compreh

Executive function at baseline and follow-up in opioid maintenance patients and its relation to psychiatric comorbidity and substance use patterns.

BACKGROUND: Research investigating executive functions in opioid-dependent patients undergoing opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) is scarce. This study aimed to assess executive function in patients with opioid use disorder at treatment initiation and one-year follow-up, exploring its correlation with psychiatric comorbidity within the patient group. Additionally, associations between executive functions and factors such as age at substance use initiation, duration of substance use, and current substance use were explored. METHODS: Forty-nine adults (mean age: 40.6 [11.4]) with opioid use dis

The Two-Way Route between Delirium Disorder and Dementia: Insights from COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Delirium disorder is a frequent neurological complication of SARS-CoV-2 infection and associated with increased disease severity and mortality. Cognitive impairment is a major risk factor for developing delirium disorder during COVID-19, which, in turn, increases the risk of subsequent neurological complications and cognitive decline. SUMMARY: The bidirectional connection between delirium disorder and dementia likely resides at multiple levels, and its pathophysiological mechanisms during COVID-19 include endothelial damage, blood-brain barrier dysfunction, and local inflammation,

Medial Frontal Hyperactivation in the Developing Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Brain: An Adaptive Response Rescued by Medication-Related Reduction of Limbic Interference?

The capacity to control emotion and behavior is an important human adaptation. The development of cognitive control strategies is a critical aspect of children's social development and protects against psychopathology. Dysfunctions in inhibitory control play an important role in the development of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and Tourette's disorder. Inhibitory control is not a unitary construct and consists of motor response inhibition (i.e., inhibition of pre-potent and automatic motor responses or cancel

The neurological examination adapted for neuropsychiatry.

The neuropsychiatric examination includes standard neurological and cognitive examination techniques with several additional observations and tasks designed to capture abnormalities common among patients with neuropsychiatric disorders or neurocognitive complaints. Although useful as a screening tool, a single standardized rating scale such as the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) or the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is insufficient to establish a neuropsychiatric diagnosis. Extra attention is paid to findings commonly seen in the setting of psychiatric disorders, dementias, movement

Neuroimaging the Effectiveness of Substance Use Disorder Treatments.

Neuroimaging techniques to measure the function and biochemistry of the human brain such as positron emission tomography (PET), proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), are powerful tools for assessing neurobiological mechanisms underlying the response to treatments in substance use disorders. Here, we review the neuroimaging literature on pharmacological and behavioral treatment in substance use disorder. We focus on neural effects of medications that reduce craving (e.g., naltrexone, bupropion hydrochloride, baclofen, methadone, var

Transgenerational transmission of an anticholinergic endophenotype with memory dysfunction.

Impaired cholinergic neurotransmission associated with cognitive dysfunction occurs in various mental disorders of different etiologies including Alzheimer's disease and postalcoholic dementia and others. To address the question whether there exists a common endophenotype with a defined genetic and/or epigenetic signature causing mental dysfunction in these disorders, we investigated 2 generations of offspring born to alcohol-treated mothers. Here, we show that memory impairment and reduced synthesis of acetylcholine occurs in both F1 (exposed to ethanol in utero) and F2 generation (never been
