Is Social Training Delivered with a Head-Mounted Display Suitable for Patients with Hereditary Ataxia?

Social cognition is fundamental in everyday life to understand "others' behavior", which is a key feature of social abilities. Previous studies demonstrated the efficacy of a rehabilitative intervention in semi-immersive virtual reality (VR) controlled by whole-body motion to improve the ability of patients with cerebellar disorders to predict others' intentions (VR-SPIRIT). Patients with severe ataxia that have difficulties at multiple levels of social processing could benefit from this intervention in terms of improving their social prediction skills, but they may have difficulties in contro

Intervention with the CO-OP Approach leads to a transfer effect over time to untrained goals for children with cerebral palsy or spina bifida.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate whether the treatment effects, in terms of goal attainment, transfer effects and impact on executive functions, of an intervention in children with cerebral palsy or spina bifida using the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) Approach are maintained over time, from immediately after the intervention to three months afterwards. METHOD: A three-month follow-up study, from an intervention using CO-OP. Thirty-four children (7-16 years) each identified four goals (one untrained to examine transfer) and participated in an eleven-ses

Artificial Intelligence-Enabled End-To-End Detection and Assessment of Alzheimer's Disease Using Voice.

There is currently no simple, widely available screening method for Alzheimer's disease (AD), partly because the diagnosis of AD is complex and typically involves expensive and sometimes invasive tests not commonly available outside highly specialized clinical settings. Here, we developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered end-to-end system to detect AD and predict its severity directly from voice recordings. At the core of our system is the pre-trained data2vec model, the first high-performance self-supervised algorithm that works for speech, vision, and text. Our model was internally ev

Predicting diagnosis 4 years prior to Alzheimer's disease incident.

This study employed a deep learning longitudinal model, graph convolutional and recurrent neural network (graph-CNN-RNN), on a series of brain structural MRI scans for AD prognosis. It characterized whole-brain morphology via incorporating longitudinal cortical and subcortical morphology and defined a probabilistic risk for the prediction of AD as a function of age prior to clinical diagnosis. The graph-CNN-RNN model was trained on half of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative dataset (ADNI, n = 1559) and validated on the other half of the ADNI dataset and the Open Access Series of I

An Intelligent System for Early Recognition of Alzheimer's Disease Using Neuroimaging.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects brain cells, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has been defined as the early phase that describes the onset of AD. Early detection of MCI can be used to save patient brain cells from further damage and direct additional medical treatment to prevent its progression. Lately, the use of deep learning for the early identification of AD has generated a lot of interest. However, one of the limitations of such algorithms is their inability to identify changes in the functional connectivity in the functional brain network of patien

Searching for optimal machine learning model to classify mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subtypes using multimodal MRI data.

The intervention at the stage of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is promising for preventing Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aims to search for the optimal machine learning (ML) model to classify early and late MCI (EMCI and LMCI) subtypes using multimodal MRI data. First, the tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) analyses showed LMCI-related white matter changes in the Corpus Callosum. The ROI-based tractography addressed the connected cortical areas by affected callosal fibers. We then prepared two feature subsets for ML by measuring resting-state functional connectivity (TBSS-RSFC meth

Music listening for people living with dementia: a systematic review.

This review aimed at exploring how music listening-based approach can be effective on physiological, cognitive and behavioural aspects, with specific reference to the domain of dementias. Music listening can be considered one of the most common approaches in dementia care, frequently in combination with other non-pharmacological treatments. This type of intervention may allow persons with dementia to work on the organization and regulation of their emotions thanks to the mediation of the sonorous-musical element. Methods. Two independent researchers performed literature search by consulting th

Balance and Cognition in Male Collegiate Lacrosse Players.

Concussion screening among collegiate lacrosse athletes is a major safety priority. Although attention has been directed at concussion management following injury, less is known about the association between cognition and balance during preseason screening. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between balance and neurocognition among collegiate male lacrosse players and to examine predictive determinants of postural stability. Participants included a convenience sample of 49 male collegiate Division 3 lacrosse players who completed a demographic survey and performed the imme

Exploring the Clinical Utility of the Music Therapy Assessment Tool for Awareness in Disorders of Consciousness (MATADOC) with People with End-Stage Dementia.

Dementia is a major health concern globally and cross-culturally with progressive decline in cognition, mobility and communication. There are few interventions for end-stage dementia (ESD) although music interventions have been observed to be accessible for people with mid to late-stage dementia. The lack of protocols and measures suited to ESD has limited research into the effects of music therapy. Measure sensitivity to minimal responsiveness is one limitation to the use of existing music intervention measures with ESD. This exploratory study examined the clinical utility of the Music Therap

Adult Neurogenesis and Stroke: A Tale of Two Neurogenic Niches.

In the aftermath of an acute stroke, numerous signaling cascades that reshape the brain both in the perilesional zone as well as in more distal regions are activated. Despite continuous improvement in the acute treatment of stroke and the sustained research efforts into the pathophysiology of stroke, we critically lag in our integrated understanding of the delayed and chronic responses to ischemic injury. As such, the beneficial or maladaptive effect of some stroke-induced cellular responses is unclear, restricting the advancement of therapeutic strategies to target long-term complications. A

3D convolutional neural networks for stalled brain capillary detection.

Adequate blood supply is critical for normal brain function. Brain vasculature dysfunctions, including stalled blood flow in cerebral capillaries, are associated with cognitive decline and pathogenesis in Alzheimer's disease. Recent advances in imaging technology enabled generation of high-quality 3D images that can be used to visualize stalled blood vessels. However, localization of stalled vessels in 3D images is often required as the first step for downstream analysis. When performed manually, this process is tedious, time-consuming, and error-prone. Here, we describe a deep learning-based

We are not ready to abandon the current schizophrenia construct, but should be prepared to do so.

The current schizophrenia construct as delineated in the latest editions of the DSM and the ICD has some strengths, but also many weaknesses. It improved the reliability of the diagnosis, made communication among clinicians, users and families less ambiguous, is useful for education and training, and for reimbursement and insurance purposes. However, many serious weaknesses should be considered. The term "Schizophrenia" does not recognize the heterogeneity of the disorder and might nourish the belief that schizophrenia represents a unitary disease. In addition, there is no agreement on the exi

The Role of the Posterior Cerebellum in Dysfunctional Social Sequencing.

Recent advances in social neuroscience have highlighted the critical role of the cerebellum in social cognition, and especially the posterior cerebellum. Studies have supported the view that the posterior cerebellum builds internal action models of our social interactions to predict how other people's actions will be executed and what our most likely responses are to these actions. This mechanism allows to better anticipate action sequences during social interactions in an automatic and intuitive way and to fine-tune these anticipations, making it easier to understand other's social behaviors

The revised Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination can facilitate differentiation of dementia with Lewy bodies from Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a major cause of degenerative dementia, yet the diagnosis is often missed or mistaken for Alzheimer's disease (AD). We assessed whether the revised Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE-R), a brief test for dementia, differentiates DLB from AD. METHODS: We first compared baseline ACE-R performance in 76 individuals with DLB, 40 individuals with AD and 66 healthy controls. We then investigated the diagnostic accuracy of a simple standardised 'memory/visuospatial' ratio calculated from the ACE-R subscores. Finally, as a comparison a logistic reg

An Updated Review of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex-Associated Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a neurocutaneous disorder caused by mutations of either the TSC1 or TSC2 gene. Various neuropsychiatric features, including autism, are prevalent in TSC. Recently, significant progress has been possible with the prospective calculation of the prevalence of autism in TSC, identification of early clinical and neurophysiological biomarkers to predict autism, and investigation of different therapies to prevent autism in this high-risk population. The author provides a narrative review of recent findings related to biomarkers for diagnosis of autism in TSC, as we

Patient education in dental medicine: A review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: In dental medicine, chronic diseases and chronic conditions (such as chronic periodontitis, temporomandibular disorders, chronic orofacial pain) justify patient education to self-care. This strategy of secondary or tertiary prevention, even if officially recognised, is still less known compared to health education, a form of primary prevention. The aim of the study was to make the point of recent studies devoted to patient education. Thus, the purpose of the study was to give an updated picture of patient education in odontology, describing, through an analysis of the internation

Understanding, educating, and supporting children with specific learning disabilities: 50 years of science and practice.

Specific learning disabilities (SLDs) are highly relevant to the science and practice of psychology, both historically and currently, exemplifying the integration of interdisciplinary approaches to human conditions. They can be manifested as primary conditions-as difficulties in acquiring specific academic skills-or as secondary conditions, comorbid to other developmental disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. In this synthesis of historical and contemporary trends in research and practice, we mark the 50th anniversary of the recognition of SLDs as a disability in the Unit
