BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most malignant and prevalent primary brain tumor in adults, accounting for up to 60% of all adult brain tumor, classified as WHO grade 4. Uncontrolled cell-cycle progression is one of the hallmarks of GBM. The patient prognosis is still poor after multimodal treatment, underscoring the need for new therapeutic strategies. Derived from Piper cubeba, hinokinin is a bioactive dibenzylbutyrolactone lignan that has demonstrated interesting anticancer effects. However, little is known about its molecular processes in GBM.
METHODS: To understand the therapeutic

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is a set of acquired and progressive neuropsychiatric disorders. The most common types of dementia include Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD). Early intravital diagnosis of both types of dementia is difficult. Both molecular and neuroimaging markers are important for the diagnosis of different types of dementia.
METHODS: This review employed freely accessible databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect, using keywords such as molecular parameters, neuroimaging factors, dementia, FTD, Alzheimer's disease, and fMRI.
RESULTS: Amo

The efficacy of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is significantly hindered by early embryonic developmental failure and oocyte maturation arrest. Recent findings in reproductive genetics have identified several oocyte-specific genes-TUBB8, KIF11, and CKAP5-as essential regulators of meiotic spindle formation and cytoskeletal dynamics. Mutations in these genes can lead to significant meiotic defects, fertilization failure, and embryo arrest. The links between genotype and phenotype, along with the underlying biological mechanisms, remain inadequately characterized despite the increasing number of i

Waardenburg syndrome (WS) represents a group of genetic conditions characterized by auditory and pigmentation defects. Pathogenic variants in PAX3, MITF, SOX10, EDN3, EDNRB, SNAI2, and KITLG genes have been associated with WS across multiple populations; a comprehensive study of WS in Africa has not yet been reported. We conducted a systematic review of clinical expressions and genetics of WS across Africa. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed, and the study protocol was registered on PROSPERO, the International Prospective Re

The global misuse of antimicrobial medication has further exacerbated the problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), enriching the pool of genetic mechanisms previously adopted by bacteria to evade antimicrobial drugs. AMR can be either intrinsic or acquired. It can be acquired either by selective genetic modification or by horizontal gene transfer that allows microorganisms to incorporate novel genes from other organisms or environments into their genomes. To avoid an eventual antimicrobial mistreatment, the use of antimicrobials in farm animal has been recently reconsidered in many countries

BACKGROUND: Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathies (DEEs) are defined by drug-resistant seizures and neurodevelopmental disorders. Over 50% of patients have a genetic cause. Studies have shown that patients with DEEs, regardless of genetic diagnosis, experience a central visual function disorder known as Cerebral (cortical) Visual Impairment (CVI). The prevalence of CVI in DEE patients is currently unknown. A quantitative synthesis of existing data on the prevalence rates of this condition would aid in understanding the magnitude of the problem, outlining future research, and suggesting

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare and complex neurodevelopmental disorder resulting from absent paternal expression of maternally imprinted genes at chromosomal locus 15q11-13. This absence of expression occurs as a consequence of a deletion on the chromosome 15 of paternal origin (ca. 70%), a chromosome 15 maternal uniparental disomy (mUPD; ca. 25%), or an imprinting centre defect (IC; ca. 1-3%). At birth, individuals with PWS are severely hypotonic and fail to thrive. Hyperphagia and characteristic physical and neuropsychiatric phenotypes become apparent during childhood. The

Introduction: Zoonotic transition of Influenza A viruses is the cause of epidemics with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Predicting which viral strains are likely to transition from their genetic sequence could help in the prevention and response against these zoonotic strains. We hypothesized that features predictive of viral hosts could be leveraged to identify biomarkers of zoonotic viral transition. Methods: We trained deep learning models to predict viral hosts based on the virus mRNA or protein sequences. Our multi-host dataset contained 848,630 unique nucleotide sequences obtained

The progressive formation of single or multiple cysts accompanies several renal diseases. Specifically, (i) genetic forms, such as adult dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), and (ii) acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) are probably the most frequent forms of cystic diseases. Adult dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic disorder characterized by multiple kidney cysts and systemic alterations. The genes responsible for the condition are known, and a large amount of literature focuses on the molecular description of the mechanism. The present manuscript shows that a mult
