Empathic Accuracy and Behavioral Empathy After a Moderate Dose of Beer.

OBJECTIVES: Empathic accuracy (EA) represents a person's ability to correctly infer the emotions of another person. One past study in men found lower EA for positive emotions after a moderate dose of hard liquor compared to after placebo, particularly among non-hazardous drinkers. The present study aimed to replicate this finding, using a moderate dose of beer and a mixed design. Moreover, we added a novel measure of behavioral empathy. METHODS: Participants (62% men) completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, Empathy Quotient, and Revised Drinking Motives Questionnaire. Before …

Extended blood ethyl glucuronide persistence after controlled ethanol administration: Implications for ethanol-negative delayed DUI cases.

Delayed blood sampling complicates forensic interpretation in driving-under-the-influence investigations when ethanol concentrations have declined below routine reporting thresholds. Blood ethyl glucuronide (EtG) may provide evidence of recent alcohol exposure, but its late-phase persistence under controlled conditions remains incompletely characterized. This secondary analysis evaluated blood EtG persistence following controlled administration of 1.0 g/kg ethanol in 34 participants using a predefined operational threshold of 0.09 mg/L and sampling through 15 h after completion of drinking. Th…

Exploring alcohol use and harm reduction techniques among transgender and gender diverse youth in Canada: A qualitative study.

Background: Compared to their cisgender peers, transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth and young adults report problematic drinking patterns (e.g. frequency of use, greater likelihood of use, and elevated risks for harmful use), as well as increased-risk of experiencing alcohol-related harms. Previous research suggests that increases in drinking among TGD populations may be motivated by experiences of gender minority stress (GMS). This study examines the lived/living experiences of Canadian TGD youth (ages 18-29), focusing on their experiences of GMS and resilience as it pertains to alcohol…

Sex differences in the microglial response to stress and chronic alcohol exposure in mice.

BACKGROUND: Women are more susceptible to stress-induced alcohol drinking, and preclinical data suggest that stress can increase alcohol intake in female rodents; however, a comprehensive understanding of the neurobiological processes underlying this sex difference is still emerging. Neuroimmune signaling, particularly by microglia, the brain's macrophages, is known to contribute to dysregulation of limbic circuits following stress and alcohol exposure. Females exhibit heightened immune reactivity, so we set out to characterize sex differences in the microglial response to stress and alcohol e…

Sweet Relief? Short-Term Post-Traumatic High-Sucrose Intake Attenuates Acute but Not Long-Term Fear Responses in Mice.

People often turn to sweet foods for comfort during times of stress, as energy imbalance is implicated in several neuropsychiatric disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although acute sucrose consumption may improve cognitive capabilities, its long-term effectiveness has been debated. Objectives: In a widely used mouse model, we examined the effect of sucrose drinking on conditioned fear-induced freezing (as a model of PTSD), with emphasis on the concentrations and timing of the intervention as well as sex differences. We aimed to develop a low-cost, widely accessible ther…

A quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) approach to determine water quality guidelines for Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in building plumbing.

Species within the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), a subset of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), are of major human health concern and contribute to a significant drinking water burden in the United States (US) and worldwide. The risk increases when MAC levels in environmental media are high, the hosts are susceptible, and exposures to aerosols containing MAC are frequent. MAC is typically not monitored in drinking water; currently, there are no numeric guidelines for NTM or MAC concentrations in distribution networks or building plumbing systems. To address this gap, the primary objective…

[Antithrombotic Action of Alcohol in Relation to Platelet Function].

The relationship between alcohol consumption and incident ischemic heart disease and stroke is characterized by a J- or U-shape. This denotes that light drinking has a preventive effect on cardiovascular diseases. Effects of alcohol drinking on lipid metabolism including an increase in HDL cholesterol concentration and a decrease in LDL cholesterol concentration are the main reasons for the anti-atherosclerotic action of alcohol. The antithrombotic effect of alcohol through the inhibition of platelet function is also involved in the lower incidence of ischemic arterial disease in drinkers. Cap…

Intracerebral hemorrhage complicated by alcohol use disorder in young males in Chongqing China: Characteristics and long-term outcome.

BACKGROUND: The characteristics of patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) complicated by alcohol use disorders (AUD) are not well understood. Investigating the clinical characteristics and prognosis of this subgroup (AUD-ICH) is necessary. METHODS: This study involved young males with ICH who were admitted to our hospital between January 2013 and March 2022. Based on drinking patterns, the included cases were divided into three groups: AUD, occasional drinking, and non-drinking. We compared the clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients in the three groups. The effect of AUD on …

Self-stigma in alcohol dependence scale: development and validity of the short form.

BACKGROUND: Self-stigma is associated with low self-esteem, high shame and reduced drinking-refusal self-efficacy in people with alcohol use disorder (AUD). The Self-Stigma in Alcohol-Dependence Scale-Short Form (SSAD-SF) was designed to enable a brief, but valid assessment of AUD self-stigma. METHODS: We reduced the 64-item SSAD, originally derived from 16 stereotypes towards people with AUD, by removing the most offensive items based on perspectives of people with lived experience. The newly created scale was then assessed and validated in a cross-sectional study involving 156 people report…

Daily impulsivity and alcohol expectancies: A multilevel examination of the acquired preparedness model.

BACKGROUND: The acquired preparedness model (APM) integrates personality traits and psychosocial learning to posit amechanism whereby individuals initiate and continue alcohol use. The present study examined within-person associations between impulsivity, alcohol expectancies, alcohol use, and alcohol problems to inform daily process models of drinking and test the APM. METHODS: Participants were 89 college student drinkers who completed momentary reports (three random and two user-initiated reports) for 14 days. Multilevel mediation analyses examined whether daily associations between impuls…

The BDNF Val68Met polymorphism causes a sex specific alcohol preference over social interaction and also acute tolerance to the anxiolytic effects of alcohol, a phenotype driven by malfunction of BDNF in the ventral hippocampus of male mice.

BACKGROUND: The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Valine 66 to Methionine human polymorphism results in impaired activity-dependent BDNF release and has been linked to psychiatric disorders including depression and anxiety. We previously showed that male knock-in mice carrying the mouse Methionine homolog (Met68BDNF) exhibit excessive and compulsive alcohol drinking behaviors as compared to the wild-type Val68BDNF mice. OBJECTIVE: Here, we set out to determine the potential mechanism for the heightened and compulsive alcohol drinking phenotypes detected in Met68BDNF mice. RESULTS: We …

Stigma and the Couple: How Daily Stigma Experiences Influence Relationship Functioning and Alcohol Use in Female Cisgender Couples.

Minority stress is the leading explanation for sexual minority women's (SMW) higher rates of, and heavier, alcohol use compared to heterosexual women. Little is known about how both partners' sexual minority stressors impact alcohol consumption in a dyadic context, and even less research has considered these effects at the day-level. This study utilizes dyadic daily diary data to test associations of each partner's sexual minority stress events with drinking outcomes (day-level alcohol use, heavy episodic drinking [HED], and estimated blood alcohol content [eBAC]) among women in same-gender re…

Development of a new design of deironing granulated filter for joint removal of iron and ammonium nitrogen from underground water.

Providing the population with high-quality drinking water is one of the main state tasks. Rural water supply systems and water supply systems of small settlements in the region require special attention, namely, the development of technologies for individual, small-sized water treatment equipment, as well as equipment for collective use, designed to purify groundwater for drinking purposes. In many areas, there are groundwaters containing excess levels of several pollutants, which makes their purification much more difficult. Elimination of shortcomings in the known methods of water iron remov…

Limited evidence for a moderating effect of HIV status on brain age in heavy episodic drinkers.

We set out to test the hypothesis that greater brain ageing will be observed in people with HIV (PWH) and those who engage in heavy episodic drinking (HED), with their combined effects being especially detrimental in cognitive control brain networks. We correlated measures of "brain age gap" (BAG) and neurocognitive impairment in participants with and without HIV and HED. Sixty-nine participants were recruited from a community health centre in Cape Town: HIV - /HED - (N = 17), HIV + /HED - (N = 14), HIV - /HED + (N = 21), and HIV + /HED + (N = 17). Brain age was modelled using structural MRI f…
