Impingement of the carotid canal on the basal turn of the cochlea as pertaining to cochlear implantation.

HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the relation of the basal turn of the cochlea with the carotid canal as pertaining to cochlear implantation. BACKGROUND: Cochlear implantation is an established mode of treatment for patients with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss. An intricate knowledge of both the typical and atypical topography of the cochlea with the carotid canal is essential for safely conducting cochlear implantation. DESIGN: Fifty-eight cadaveric temporal bones were microdissected to expose the medial wall of the middle ear. To open the basal turn of the cochlea, the promontory was

IGF1 molecular anomalies demonstrate its critical role in fetal, postnatal growth and brain development.

The phenotype caused by human genetic insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) defects is characterised by the association of intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation with sensorineural deafness and intellectual deficit. This syndrome is extremely rare and only four cases have been reported. Addition clinical features may include microcephaly and later in life adiposity and insulin resistance. Partial gonadal dysfunction and osteoporosis may also be present. A case of partial IGF-I deficiency has recently been described and was associated with pre- and postnatal growth retardation and microce

An arteriovenous malformation within the internal acoustic meatus and cerebellopontine angle cistern.

OBJECTIVES: We report a case of an arteriovenous malformation within the internal auditory meatus and cerebellopontine angle, and we discuss its imaging appearances and management. CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old man presented with a two-year history of vertigo. Magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography demonstrated a lesion consisting of multiple 'high flow' vessels within the left internal auditory meatus and cerebellopontine angle. Transarterial embolisation was performed, with obliteration of the arteriovenous malformation. CONCLUSION: Arteriovenous malformations of the in

Hypoxic changes in the central nervous system of noise-exposed mice.

CONCLUSION: After a noise-induced transient threshold shift, hypoxia occurred in the central nervous system, especially in the auditory cortex, the hippocampus, and the inferior colliculus. OBJECTIVES: Noise-induced inner ear hypoxia was shown by measurement of an increase in hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha, which is expressed? in the nucleus under hypoxic conditions. This study uses pimonidazole to localize site-specific hypoxic changes occurring in the mouse central auditory pathway during noise-induced auditory threshold shift. METHOD: BALB/c hybrid mice with normal hearing were exposed

Results of 100 vestibular schwannoma operations.

Between 1991 and 2000, 154 cerebello-pontine angle (CPA) tumors were seen at the University ENT-department of the Sint-Augustinus Hospital, Antwerp. Amongst these, 127 were vestibular schwannomas detected by MR-imaging. Noteworthy is that in 5% of these, the ABR latencies were within normal limits. One hundred patients underwent tumor removal either by the translabyrinthine (66) or by the retrosigmoid (34) approach and all had a follow-up of at least two years. For large tumors (> 2 cm extension in the CPA) or in the case of poor hearing the translabyrinthine approach was used. For patients wi

Cellular distribution of parchorin, a chloride intracellular channel-related protein, in various tissues.

The cellular distribution of parchorin, a new chloride intracellular channel family member, was investigated in rabbit tissues by immunohistochemistry using an antibody recognizing the sequence containing a parchorin-specific repeat. Parchorin preferentially resides in the epithelium of the ducts of the lacrymal, parotid, submandibular, and mammary glands and the pancreas, prostate, and testis. In the trachea and lung, parchorin was found in the airway epithelium and type II alveolar cells. In the kidney, parchorin was distributed mainly from the thick ascending limb to the distal convoluted t

Ototoxicity in developing mammals.

Developing mammals are more sensitive to noise, chemical and drug-induced ototoxicity than adults, with maximum sensitivity occurring during periods of anatomical and functional maturation of the cochlea. Normal physiological development of resting potentials (the endocochlear potential) and sound-evoked potentials including cochlear microphonics, summating potentials, compound action potentials, auditory brainstem responses and more recently distortion-product otoacoustic emissions have been characterized in several species including rats, mice, kittens, gerbils and guinea pigs. All of these

Audiovestibular manifestations of intracranial hypotension: a descriptive clinical series.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial hypotension (IH) results from decreased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volume or pressure and typically presents with orthostatic headache. IH may also manifest with audiovestibular symptoms with variable association to endolymphatic hydrops (EH). However, the nature of this relationship remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical, audiometric, vestibular, and imaging characteristics of patients with IH presenting with cochleovestibular dysfunction. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study including 12 patients diagnosed with IH based on MRI findi

Local cochlear delivery of berberine chloride hydrate via an injectable photo-crosslinked hydrogel for treating diabetes- induced hearing loss.

Drug delivery to the inner ear remains a major hurdle to effective therapy, underscoring the importance of precision-based delivery strategies. Diabetes-induced hearing loss (DHL) is a debilitating condition with limited therapeutic options, primarily driven by oxidative stress and microvascular damage in the cochlea. Current treatments are ineffective, highlighting the paramount need for novel strategies. Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels, owing to their biocompatibility and tunable physicochemical properties, enables in situ crosslinking using ultraviolet (UV) light for precise localiza

Effects of noise exposure on intelligibility of bone-conducted speech during earplugging.

Bone conduction (BC) is a method of perceiving sound via living tissue. Some components of BC sound reach the middle or inner ear directly, so it can be heard even when wearing earplugs. Therefore, BC is used in speech communication devices in noisy environments that require wearing earplugs. However, the perception of BC sound under high-intensity noise is generally complicated by the temporal and frequency characteristics of the noises, the noise reduction rate of the earplugs, and the "occlusion effect," a phenomenon where the loudness of low-frequency bands increases due to wearing earplug

Hampshire Sheep as a Large-Animal Model for Cochlear Implantation.

BACKGROUND: Sheep have been proposed as a large-animal model for studying cochlear implantation. However, prior sheep studies report that the facial nerve (FN) obscures the round window membrane (RWM), requiring FN sacrifice or a retrofacial opening to access the middle-ear cavity posterior to the FN for cochlear implantation. We investigated surgical access to the RWM in Hampshire sheep compared to Suffolk-Dorset sheep and the feasibility of Hampshire sheep for cochlear implantation via a facial recess approach. METHODS: Sixteen temporal bones from cadaveric sheep heads (ten Hampshire and si
