High efficient and non-invasive collection of ejaculates from rats using penile vibratory stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The rat is one of the most important experimental animals, which plays an indispensable role in biomedical research, particularly in reproduction. However, according to our best knowledge, there is no easy and efficient method available for semen collection from rats. RESULTS: In this study, we successfully collected semen through penile vibratory stimulation ejaculation (PVSE) from laboratory rats. This is an easier and more efficient method compared with rectal probe electro-ejaculation (RPE). We found that the ejaculation rate, volume, concentration and motility of semen collec

A review of sacral nerve stimulation parameters used in the treatment of faecal incontinence.

Sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) was originally developed in the field of urinary incontinence. Without adaptation, it was subsequently applied to treat faecal incontinence. SNS has now become a first line therapy for this socially disabling condition, however the mechanism of action is unknown. This review examines the evidence for stimulation parameters currently used for SNS in humans and considers the potential electrophysiological effects of changing these parameters. However, without a proper understanding of the physiology of SNS, changing stimulation parameters remains empirical.

Sphenopalatine ganglion neuromodulation in migraine: what is the rationale?

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to review the prospect of treating migraine with sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) neurostimulation. BACKGROUND: Fuelled by preliminary studies showing a beneficial effect in cluster headache patients, the potential of treating migraine with neurostimulation has gained increasing interest within recent years, as current treatment strategies often fail to provide adequate relief from this debilitating headache. Common migraine symptoms include lacrimation, nasal congestion, and conjunctival injection, all parasympathetic manifestations. In addition, stud

Safety of repeated transcranial direct current stimulation in impaired skin: a case report.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulatory technique based on the application of a weak, direct electric current via 2 or more electrodes (anode and cathode) over the scalp. One concern when applying tDCS is skin burn. It has been suggested that skin lesions are related to changes in the local dermal homeostasis, and therefore, caution is warranted in patients with skin diseases (Loo et al [Int J Neuropsychopharmacol. 2011;14:425-426]). In this context, we believe that it would be useful for this emerging field of tDCS to report the preliminary safety of repeated appli

Diaphragm pacing in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a literature review.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) remains a rapidly progressive fatal degenerative disease of motor neurons for which there are few interventions to slow disease progression or improve quality of life. A diaphragm pacing system was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in September 2011 for ALS under a Humanitarian Device Exemption. News of this approval has been met with a combination of excitement and uncertainty by members of the ALS community. We review the currently available data on the diaphragm pacing system and its use in ALS. Diaphragm pacing appears to be reasonably sa

Involvement of the right inferior longitudinal fascicle in visual hemiagnosia: a brain stimulation mapping study.

Neural foundations underlying visual agnosia are poorly understood. The authors present the case of a patient who underwent awake surgery for a right basal temporooccipital low-grade glioma in which direct electrostimulation was used both at the cortical and subcortical level. Brain mapping over the inferior longitudinal fascicle generated contralateral visual hemiagnosia. These original findings are in agreement with recent tractography data that have confirmed the existence of an occipitotemporal pathway connecting occipital visual input to higher-level processing in temporal lobe structures

Fifteen years of sacral nerve stimulation: from an open procedure to a minimally invasive technique.

AIM: This historical review describes the development of InterStim™ therapy from an open procedure to a minimally invasive technique for the treatment of pelvic floor disorders. The latest technological and surgical evaluations of sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) are presented with their impact on the therapy's success and safety. METHOD: A search for relevant literature on SNS in the PubMed database was carried out for this review, which focuses on technical modifications and related clinical outcomes. RESULTS: InterStim™ therapy for faecal incontinence was introduced in Europe in 1995. Since

[Perioperative considerations in vagal nerve stimulator implantation].

Vagal nerve stimulation has become an a important tool in the treatment of refractory epilepsy, which continues to be the main indication for this technique. Other therapeutic indications are emerging, however, and vagal nerve stimulation has now been approved for major depression. Additional possible uses under study include morbid obesity, Alzheimer disease, chronic pain syndromes, and certain neuropsychologic disorders. This review considers perioperative aspects relevant to using this therapeutic procedure with a view to facilitating better and more integrated management of its application

[Electrostimulation for the treatment of dry mouth].

Xerostomia is a very common condition, which not only involves dry mouth feeling, but can also lead to psychosocial distress, impaired quality of life, and complications, such as dental caries and oral candidiasis. It is generally induced by hypofunction of salivary glands, which has a wide variety of etiologies, such as Sjögren's syndrome, radiotherapy to the head and neck and side effects of medications. Current therapies rely on saliva substitutes and pharmacological stimulation of the parasympathetic system. These treatment modalities are somewhat limited by their short-term efficacy, high

[Use of rechargeable stimulators in 2 cases of cauda equina syndrome].

The first of the 2 cases of cauda equina syndrome we report occurred following phenolization of sacral roots after a series of operations for Hirsprung disease. The second occurred after trauma from a bullet that hit the spine. Fecal and urinary incontinence and neuropathic pain in the lower extremities were present in both cases. After various treatments failed, both patients were given dual spinal stimulation for integrated treatment of both incontinence and neuropathic pain. We applied a novel approach, connecting both stimulators to a single rechargeable generator, reducing medium- and lon

VNS and depression: current status and future directions.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an established anticonvulsant therapy in treatment-resistant patients with epilepsy. The known anatomical projections of the vagus nerve to many brain regions that have been implicated in mood disorders suggest that VNS may also have useful antidepressant effects. There has been growing interest in the potential application of VNS in the nonpharmacological management of treatment-resistant depression. Results from an open-label study, in which 59 subjects with treatment-resistant depression were treated for 10 weeks with VNS therapy, reported a 31% response rat

[Problem of identity of functional states of neuronal systems].

A compartmental conception of modeling the neuron networks is presented. Stationary and other regimes under standard electrical stimulation of neuron networks are described. Neuron networks may be reducible and irreducible. The mathematical model of the stationary state is a model of a normal neuron network under hyperventilation. The role of output stimuli in identifying the hierarchical structure of neuron networks and the stability of special regimes and such structure is discussed. A biological interpretation of the results of modeling is presented.

Use of stun guns for venomous bites and stings: a review.

During the past 2 decades, articles suggesting that stun guns be utilized to treat venomous bites and stings have appeared in both the lay and medical press. Although never widely considered to be standard therapy for venomous bites and stings, stun guns are still considered to be a treatment option by some medical practitioners and outdoor enthusiasts. A Medline search was performed using these terms: venomous bites, venomous stings, snake bites, spider bites, electrical, stun gun, high voltage electricity, low amperage electricity, direct current, and shock therapy. Articles selected include

[Preliminary investigation on the pathogeny, diagnosis and treatment of chondromalacia patella].

This paper presents the preliminary investigation on chondromalacia patella at our department in recent years. A random cluster sampling survey covering 2743 normal persons was carried out. The prevalence rate is 36.2%. It was found that, applying transmission electron microscope and immunohistochemical methods on to cartilage tissues of the abnormal region, articular cartilage necrosis was in direct proportion with the abnormal pressure, while the restoration capability of local chondrocytes was in inverse proportion with pathological changes and the pressure. The chondromalacia patella was p

Neuromodulation: spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation.

Spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation for relief of chronic intractable pain have been used since the mid-1960s. Multiple mechanisms of action have been theorized without a clear-cut winner. The early frustrations with patient selection criteria and equipment difficulties have diminished secondary to carefully controlled studies and improvements in equipment designs. Efficacy studies consistently show an overall 50% improvement in long-term pain control in patients who have failed conservative or other invasive modalities. With improvements in today's technology, one hopes that better a
