Three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures offer more physiologically relevant models than conventional cell monolayers (2D) for mimicking in vivo tissue architecture. Despite their advantages, the use of 3D fish cell models in toxicological studies remains limited. This study aims to characterize the lipidomic and gene expression profiles of zebrafish liver (ZFL) spheroids and evaluate their metabolic and functional differences compared to those of conventional monolayer cultures. Seven-day-old spheroids (400 μm diameter) exhibited increased levels of neutral lipids─cholesterol esters (CEs) and dia

Gut microbiota remodeling is a critical component of the domestication syndrome. However, the structural and functional consequences of domestication on gut microbiomes in ducks remain poorly understood. Understanding how domestication and associated ecological transitions influence gut microbial communities can shed light on host adaptation mechanisms. We performed integrated metagenomic and metabolomic analyses of the ileal and cecal microbiota from Mallards and Shaoxing ducks-two ecotypes of Anas platyrhynchos representing wild and domesticated lineages-to investigate microbial community st

Microplastics, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are widely detected in sludge, and their interactions become a topic of research interest in recent years. This paper firstly summarized the occurrence of microplastics, antibiotics and ARGs, and their combined pollution in sludge. Although the concentrations of these pollutants varied significantly in sludge environments, their frequent detection suggested serious combined pollution. Then, the interactions between microplastics, antibiotics and ARGs and their key mechanisms were emphatically revealed, where their interactions w

UNLABELLED: Environmental pollutants; bioaerosols, chemicals and micro/nano-plastics (MNPs) can disrupt the mechano-biological processes of the human body, impairing structural, cellular, and molecular functions. Such disruptions may ultimately contribute to the onset of toxicity-associated pharmacokinetic disorders.1 Traditional in vivo and 2D in vitro models often fall short in accurately mimicking the complexity of human physiological responses to such environmental exposures. In response, recent advances in microfluidic organ-on-a-chip (OoC) platforms, organoid models, and induced pluripot

Hurricane Helene caused catastrophic flooding and infrastructure damage across the mountainous regions of western North Carolina. Responding agencies had to make real-time decisions about emergency response, infrastructure repair, and aid allocation. Here, we describe how our decade-long transdisciplinary research program supported data-driven recovery decisions in the days following a storm through the development of a novel emergency response decision support system (DSS). Integrating publicly available and geospatial data sets, we estimated that 4% of the total land area across the initial

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) prevalence is higher among sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals compared with cisgender heterosexuals; SGM individuals are additionally diagnosed with BPD more frequently in clinical settings. There appears to be a small effect of clinician bias-particularly for gender minority individuals. However, it does not fully explain this observed psychiatric disparity. In the current article, we review the historical origins of the BPD diagnosis as well as the present-day conceptualization of the disorder. The theory, research, and treatment of BPD overwhe

Ciprofloxacin (CIP), a widely used fluoroquinolone antibiotic, has become a significant contaminant in aquatic environments due to its extensive use and incomplete metabolism. This review comprehensively analyses CIP pollution, including its sources, environmental and health impacts, and removal strategies. Chemical methods such as advanced oxidation processes and physical techniques like adsorption are evaluated for their efficiency in CIP removal. Furthermore, the review also addresses research gaps, including the need for cost-effective adsorbents and better regulatory frameworks. The prima

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly due to extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases (CPs), poses a critical threat to global health. This study aimed to characterize the molecular epidemiology, resistance profiles, and genomic features of ESBL- and CP-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonaie (ESBL/CP-Ec/Kp) isolates from a Spanish hospital (2020-2024) and explore links to environmental reservoirs like white storks foraging at a nearby landfill. A total of 121 clinical Ec/Kp isolates (55 ESBL-Ec, 1 CP-Ec, 35 ESBL-Kp, 17 CP-Kp, 13 ESBL+CP-Kp) underwent pheno

Currently, one of the major global public health concerns that impacts humans, animals, and the environment is antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It poses serious problems for contemporary medicine by casting doubt on the effectiveness of antibiotics and other antimicrobials. The main causes of environmental AMR include the abuse of antibiotics and nonantibiotic substances, such as biocides and heavy metals, in veterinary care, agriculture, and healthcare, which hasten the generation of resistant superbugs. The dissemination of drug-resistant microbes and genetic elements is aided by environmenta

Calcium sulfate minerals are found in multiple environments on Earth and Mars, with chloride (Cl) salts widely distributed on both planets. Low-temperature studies have explored geochemical processes, including the formation of transient liquid water and ion migration on Mars. Some Cl-salts (e.g., NaCl and CaCl2) can dissolve gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) in certain environments, making gypsum-Cl salt interactions significant. Additionally, gypsum's geochemical transformation at high temperatures reveals dehydration pathways crucial for understanding Mars' aqueous history and potential for life. This st

BACKGROUND: Integrating environmental sustainability in health-care decision making might be a key strategy to achieve greener clinical practice. We aim to explore whether advising environmentally sustainable treatment options with or without explicitly mentioning sustainability as an argument in clinical counselling affects patients' trust in care, compared with less sustainable standard treatment options, while accounting for differences in severity and types of medical problems.
METHODS: This randomised, double-blind, experimental vignette study was conducted at the Leiden University Medic

Carboneous nanomaterials derived from natural sources are being used as chemosensors due to their small size, water solubility, photostability, tunable emission properties, etc. In the present work, highly fluorescent and photostable carbon dots (CDs) having an average size of 11 nm were prepared from Citrus reticulata through a one-step hydrothermal process. CDs emitted a strong green fluorescence under UV light. The prepared CDs were characterized using TEM, XRD, XPS, FTIR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence techniques. Maximum emission intensity of CDs was recorded at 438 nm on excitation at 350 nm.
