State of the global tuberculosis epidemic: burden, progress towards WHO End TB Strategy targets and systemic challenges.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious pathogen globally despite decades of effective chemotherapy. In 2024, an estimated 10·7 million people developed tuberculosis, including approximately 620 000 people living with HIV (PLHIV), and tuberculosis caused an estimated 1·23 million deaths overall, including approximately 150 000 deaths among PLHIV. Men accounted for more than half of the cases, and children represented a substantial burden, reflecting ongoing transmission and diagnostic gaps. Approximately a quarter of the world's population has bee

A Hidden Epidemic in Healthcare: Metabolic Syndrome among Doctors in a Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital in North-East India.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) poses significant health challenges globally, with healthcare professionals facing unique occupational risks despite their medical knowledge. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of MetS and its associated predictors among doctors at a tertiary care teaching institution. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 132 doctors at a tertiary care teaching hospital in northeastern India from June 2024 to January 2025. Data were collected using a structured WHO STEPS-based questionnaire covering sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle f

What happened after the epidemic? Equine influenza surveillance sheds light on sources and seasonal risk in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of equine influenza (EI) in the United Kingdom has not been systematically described since the 2019 epidemic. OBJECTIVES: To summarise UK EI surveillance (2020-2024), quantify outbreak seasonality and assess movement-related sources. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational analysis of national surveillance and horse importation data. METHODS: Epidemiological data for laboratory-confirmed EI cases in the United Kingdom were collated. Outbreaks (EI-infected premises) were defined as one or more laboratory-confirmed cases on the same premises within a 4-week peri

Forging a global shield against HMPV: Uniting healthcare systems and community action to counter a silent respiratory epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has emerged as a significant global cause of acute respiratory infections, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Despite its considerable impact, contributing to 5%-15% of pediatric respiratory hospitalizations and 10% of respiratory deaths in children under five, HMPV often remains underdiagnosed and receives insufficient attention within public health frameworks. The absence of specific antiviral treatments and preventative vaccines further exacerbates its clinical c

Inference of latent epidemic regimes and generative simulations reveal how inequality and mobility shape COVID-19 transmission.

Epidemic waves in large metropolitan areas unfold heterogeneously across territories shaped by persistent socioeconomic inequalities. Explaining how transmission intensifies, stabilises, and shifts across the urban landscape remains a central challenge in epidemiology. This study develops a covariate-dependent, non-homogeneous Hidden Markov Model (nHMM) to infer latent transmission regimes from municipality-level COVID-19 incidence in Santiago, Chile. The framework links daily case dynamics to mobility flows and structural socioeconomic indicators within a hierarchical specification that captu

Modeling epidemic and economic trade-offs under alternative COVID-19 isolation exit scenarios in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Scientific evidence should guide adjustments to isolation policies as part of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) exit strategies. However, such evidence was limited when these strategies were implemented. This study retrospectively evaluated the relaxation of isolation policies in South Korea, aiming to generate evidence to support policy decisions in future pandemic scenarios. METHODS: We developed an age-stratified deterministic vaccination-extended Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered model to simulate counterfactual scenarios related to isolation policy changes during the

Evaluating age-dependent transmission and vaccination policy in Singapore's SARS-CoV-2 epidemic: A computational modelling approach.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Singapore revealed pronounced age-specific differences in disease transmission and severity. To investigate these dynamics, we developed a semi-mechanistic Bayesian hierarchical model that jointly estimated SARS-CoV-2 transmission across seven age groups from 2021 to 2023. Our model integrates both case and hospitalization data, while accounting for vaccination rollouts and time-varying contact patterns between age groups. Using a non-parametric approach, we estimated changes in contact behaviour directly from the epidemiological data, avoiding assumptions about thei

Preclinical Evaluation of a Phage T4-Based Multi-Epitope Nanoparticle Vaccine Against Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) continues to threaten the global swine industry, and currently available vaccines often provide incomplete protection against emerging virulent strains. In this study, we developed a phage T4-based multi-epitope nanoparticle vaccine targeting PEDV. B and T cell epitopes derived from the PEDV spike (S) protein were identified through immunoinformatic analyses and assembled into a tandem epitope construct (Pep) using flexible linkers. In silico analyses predicted favorable antigenic properties of Pep and a stable interaction with Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3)

Representation of commercial and traditional tobacco on social media: deconstructing historical narratives to address the Indigenous youth tobacco epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco has significant cultural and spiritual uses in many Indigenous communities. The tobacco industry has long appropriated American Indian or Alaska Native (AI/AN or Indigenous) cultural imagery in print media and signage to advertise commercial tobacco products. In the internet era, little is known about the representation of commercial tobacco product advertising using AI/AN terms and images on social media. METHODS: With structured platform searches, custom data collection approaches and a combination of manual content analysis and natural language processing approaches (NL
