Relationships among childhood trauma, central sensitization, and opioid-related risks in a community sample of adults with chronic pain on opioids.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationships among childhood trauma, central sensitization, and pain-, mood-, and opioid risk-related outcomes among adults with chronic pain (CP) on long-term opioid therapy (LTOT). We hypothesized that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) would relate to poorer outcomes, and that central sensitization would mediate the relationships between ACEs and outcomes. METHODS: Adults with CP, actively prescribed opioids, were recruited via ResearchMatch.org and completed a cross-sectional electronic survey. Participants completed the Adverse Childhood Experiences

Multiparity exacerbates Aβ accumulation and promotes cellular senescence in a mouse model of amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND: Women have nearly twice the lifetime risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as men. Hormonal and reproductive factors have been implicated; however, the role of parity, a female-specific experience, remains unknown. While epidemiological data suggest that high parity may increase the risk of dementia, the underlying biological mechanisms are unclear. METHODS: We investigated the impact of multiparity on AD pathology using 2-month-old female 5xFAD mice. Mice were assigned to a nulliparous (0x) or multiparous (4x) (four consecutive gestation cycles) group. Brain tissues were analyzed at 6.

Micro- and nanoplastics in pediatric health: from placental transfer to neurodevelopmental outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Micro- and Nano plastic (MNP) contamination is an emerging environmental health concern with potential implications for pediatric health. Due to developmental susceptibility and higher relative exposure, fetuses, infants, and young children may be particularly vulnerable to MNP-related toxicity. METHOD: This narrative review integrates evidence from animal models, human biomonitoring, and mechanistic studies to evaluate prenatal and early-life exposure pathways and potential neurodevelopmental consequences of MNPs. The synthesis addresses placental transfer, postnatal ingestion, i

The Dietary Index for Gut Microbiota and Live Microbe Intake in Relation to Visceral Fat Obesity: Evidence From NHANES With Vitamin D as a Mediator.

While the gut microbiota plays a critical role in host metabolism, epidemiological evidence linking microbiota-targeted dietary patterns to visceral fat obesity (VFO) remains limited. Using data from 8080 adults aged 20-59 years participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018, we examined the associations of the Dietary Index for Gut Microbiota (DI-GM) and dietary live microbe intake with visceral fat area (VFA) and VFO, and further explored the potential mediating role of serum vitamin D. Multivariable linear and logistic regression models were applied

Single and combined effects of prenatal exposure to air pollutants on children's cognitive performance.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal air pollution exposure has been increasingly recognised for its impact on children's cognitive development and overall health. This study explored the association between prenatal exposure to air pollutants and cognitive performance in two age groups of children, also assessing combined pollutants and identifying sensitive prenatal exposure windows. METHODS: A total of 781 children were included: 295 preschool-aged (4-5 years) and 486 school-aged (10-11 years), recruited from the EPINED epidemiological project in Tarragona, Spain. Cognitive performance was assessed using

Cost-utility analysis of cerebrospinal fluid versus blood biomarkers for early detection of Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment in Thailand: a modeling study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-utility of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood-based amyloid beta biomarkers for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment among older Thai adults at high risk of dementia. METHODS: We constructed a decision tree with Markov models from a societal perspective, using a 1-year cycle over a lifetime horizon and applying a 3% annual discount. Amyloid beta (Aβ)1–42 was used for CSF, while Aβ40 and Aβ42 were used for blood. Sensitivity and specificity data were primarily derived from Thai patients at Siriraj Hospital, and nonpharmacological

Selenium Deficiency is a Significant Risk Factor for Sarcopenia: Evidence and Selenoprotein-Mediated Mechanisms.

This review systematically maps the causal and mechanistic connections between selenium status and sarcopenia, a debilitating condition characterized by age-related loss of muscle mass, strength, and function. Current evidence reveals a strong and consistent association across studies. Epidemiological data demonstrate that lower levels of various selenium biomarkers, including serum/plasma selenium, whole blood selenium, the selenium transport protein SELENOP, and dietary selenium intake, are significantly associated with poorer muscle outcomes, such as decreased grip strength, reduced muscle

Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome with Angiogenesis Inhibitors for Solid Tumours: Clues from a Disproportionality Analysis of the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System and Pharmacodynamics.

BACKGROUND: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a rare neurologic condition that may occur as an adverse drug reaction (ADR). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize post-marketing reporting of PRES related to angiogenesis inhibitors targeting the vascular endothelial growth factor and its receptor (VEGF/VEGFR) and to explore the underlying pharmacodynamic mechanisms. METHODS: A disproportionality analysis was performed within the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. The Bayesian information component (IC) was calculated to detect signals of disproportionate re

Life-history traits associated to West Nile virus seroprevalence in wild birds: Lessons from the recent outbreaks in Spain.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borne zoonotic pathogen maintained in a bird-mosquito cycle, occasionally infecting humans and horses. It is considered a re-emerging pathogen in Europe, with recurrent outbreaks recently reported in Spain. However, the ecological and evolutionary factors driving spatio-temporal variation in WNV incidence remain unclear. To address this, we analysed a long-term dataset of the presence of WNV neutralizing antibodies in 19,105 serum samples from 48 avian species. Blood samples were collected from birds in southern Spain over two decades, between 2003 and 2024, e

Alcohol and tobacco in cancer: A unified framework of interaction across carcinogenic pathways and cancer types.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and tobacco are among the leading preventable causes of cancer worldwide and frequently co-occur. While both are well-established independent carcinogens, their combined effects remain insufficiently characterized and inconsistently interpreted across cancer types. OBJECTIVE: This review synthesizes epidemiological and mechanistic evidence on alcohol-tobacco interaction in carcinogenesis, distinguishing statistical interaction from evidence of biological mechanism. METHODS: We examined interaction patterns across major cancer sites and assess the extent to which combined

Alcohol-Induced Dysregulation of Hydrogen Sulfide Signaling in Alzheimer's Disease-Narrative Mechanistic Synthesis Review.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is highly comorbid with psychiatric conditions and is increasingly recognized as a modifiable factor associated with cognitive decline and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). While epidemiological and experimental studies consistently demonstrate that chronic alcohol exposure exacerbates neurodegenerative vulnerability rather than implying a single dominant causal pathway, accumulating evidence supports a multifactorial and context-dependent framework in which alcohol acts as a disease-modifying stressor that perturbs endogenous adaptive and resilience mech

Multi-site surveillance of the severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus vector Haemaphysalis longicornis across diverse locations in Korea and evaluation of cinnamaldehyde-derived vector-control agents.

This study comprises two distinct but parallel investigations concerning Haemaphysalis longicornis in Korea: an exploratory ecological survey of vector density across 20 sites in 2023 and a laboratory-based screening of Cinnamomum cassia oils, cinnamaldehyde-derived compounds, and associated enzymatic responses in H. longicornis. In the ecological survey, H. longicornis accounted for 75.5% of > 10,000 vectors, consistent with its role as the principal vector of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). Generalized linear models indicated that mean temperature (β=0.46, p < 0.00

mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccination and risk of autoimmune diseases in the pediatric population.

PURPOSE: Vaccine-related autoimmune diseases have been hypothesized for decades, but epidemiological studies have consistently shown no associations with routine childhood vaccinations. The introduction of mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines renewed attention to this question, given theoretical mechanisms such as molecular mimicry and immune overactivation. Using medical records from the TriNetX US collaborative network, this study evaluated whether COVID-19 vaccination is associated with increased risk of autoimmune disease in children and explored the role of SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: We anal

Ozone exposure and the risk of gestational hypertension in a northern Chinese city: Identifying the critical windows of exposure.

Increasing evidence indicates the potential association between maternal exposure to air pollution and adverse obstetric outcomes. However, the relationship between ozone (O3) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) is limited and inconsistent. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the role of O3 in the risk of HDPs, particularly across diverse geographic and demographic groups. This cohort study included a total of 28,908 pairs of mothers and infants in a northern Chinese city, a typical energy production base, between January 2018 and December 2020. To screen for gestational hypertens
